SUMMARY:University of Hawaii Cancer Center
DESCRIPTION:Honolulu\, HI. Team Draft will visit the University of Hawaii Cancer Center (UH Cancer Center)\, and speak with their lung cancer Team about the state of lung cancer on the Hawaiian Islands. UH Cancer Center lung cancer survivor Bridgette Blanch will represent Team Draft at the Pro Bowl on Sunday\, January 26th. \nThe University of Hawaii Cancer Center (UH Cancer Center) was founded in 1981 and became an NCI-designated cancer center in 1996. The Center’s mission is to reduce the burden of cancer through research\, education\, and outreach\, with an emphasis on the unique ethnic\, cultural\, and environmental characteristics of Hawaii and the Pacific.\nResearch activities are organized into three interdisciplinary programs: Epidemiology\, Cancer Biology\, and Cancer Prevention and Control. Experts who participate in the research projects include faculty in the areas of epidemiology\, molecular carcinogenesis\, cancer treatment\, and prevention methodology. UH Cancer Center has recently formed a consortium with the University’s John A. Burns School of Medicine\, Queen’s Medical Center\, Hawaii Pacific Health\, Kuakini Medical Center\, and other state hospitals to promote translational research and expand UHCC’s clinical collaborations. \nAn important aspect of the work of the Center is its outreach to Hawaii’s multiethnic community. This outreach includes education\, particularly about prevention\, and support programs for cancer survivors. UH Cancer Center makes the results of the latest research available to the local health care and research communities. Partnerships include the University of Guam and the Tripler Army Medical Center. \nThe Cancer Center serves as the headquarters for one of NCI’s Minority-Based Community Clinical Oncology Programs. The program provides patients access to clinical trials in the areas of cancer prevention\, control\, and treatment. Through the UH Cancer Center’s outreach programs\, local hospitals and physicians are able to participate in clinical trials in their communities. Through the Center\, clinical trials are made available from the major NCI cooperative research groups\, including the Southwest Oncology Group\, Children’s Oncology Group\, Gynecological Oncology Group\, and the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group.

SUMMARY:Winter White
DESCRIPTION:Saks Fifth Avenue\, New York\, NY. Friday morning\, Off The Field Players’ Wives Association (OTFPWA) and Team Draft—a lung cancer awareness initiative launched by Chris and Keasha Draft during Keasha’s year-long battle with the disease—teamed up to raise lung cancer awareness through theWinter White portion of OTFPWA’s annual Super Bowl Fashion Show\, during which some of the member models were styled from head to toe in white\, the traditional lung cancer awareness color.\nA Tale of Two Keashas \nNFL veterans Chris Draft and Levon Kirkland have a lot in common.  Both men spent more than a decade in the League.  Both played linebacker.  Both married beautiful\, intelligent\, vivacious women named Keasha.  And both recently lost their wives to lung cancer. Winter White was dedicated to the survivors\, caregivers and healthcare providers who are battling this disease every day\, and to the memories of these two strong women. \nHere are their stories. \nBorn and raised in Greenville\, South Carolina\, Keasha Draft attended Clemson University (Levon Kirkland’s alma mater) where she was a member of the Rally Cat’s dance squad before graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering.  After graduation\, Keasha worked as an engineer while dancing for the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets before working in the pharmaceutical industry.  She was an energetic\, vibrant young woman who had never smoked when she was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer in December 2010.  At the time\, her only “symptom” was a slight shortness of breath a few days earlier.  Despite the diagnosis and knowing the long odds they faced\, Keasha and Chris decided to fight back.  On November 27\, 2011\, standing side-by-side\, they launched Team Draft at their wedding.  One month later\, Keasha lost her courageous fight and died at the age of 38. \nWith a resume that included a list of accomplishments and accolades in everything from academics and athletics to modeling and medicine\, Keisha Kirkland was a true renaissance woman.  A native of Danville\, Kentucky\, Keisha attended the University of Louisville before going on to complete chiropractic school at Life University\, graduating with honors.  Always looking for new challenges\, Keisha eventually became the Whether Anchor for WYFF Channel 4\, an NBC affiliate in Greenville\, South Carolina (Keasha Draft’s hometown).  Like Keasha Draft\, Keisha Kirkland was a healthy non-smoker when she was diagnosed with Stage III Lung Cancer in 2008 after her doctors noticed a mass in her right lung during a routine heart scan.  Even while enduring months of surgery\, radiation and chemotherapy Keisha inspired others by continuing to forecast the weather for WYFF and speaking to churches and support groups.  In 2012\, Keisha shared her story with the entire country when Team Draft arranged for her to be among those survivors featured during a first-of-its kind CNN special about lung cancer and Team Draft’s efforts to change the face of the disease.  In October of last year\, Keisha passed away at the age of 41 after battling the disease for 5 years. \nTeam Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.”  The fact is anybody can get lung cancer.  Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked—including Keasha Draft and Keisha Kirkland—are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases.  Team Draft is out to change all that by using the unique platform available to Chris as a former NFL player and nationally recognized community leader and health advocate to lead a National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer—a campaign that has taken the organization to more than 90 of the top cancer treatment and research centers in North America.  To learn more about Team Draft and the National Campaign and to hear the stories of many of the survivors and healthcare provides they have met along the way\, please visit www.teamdraft.org. \n\n \n“Our hope is not only to positively impact research funding\, but to improve the quality of life for those affected by lung cancer\,” says Draft. “We aren’t fighting against lung cancer\, we’re fighting for people. That’s why we are leading this national campaign to change the face of lung cancer.”\n  \nA Super Bowl Fashion Show — Winter White photo gallery

SUMMARY:Taste of the NFL
DESCRIPTION:Red Hook\, Brooklyn\, NY. — Saturday night\, lung cancer survivors Kathy O’Brien\, Abraham Almanza\, and Susan Cortese joined Team Draft at the 23rd annual Taste Of The NFL. As Team Draft’s representatives at the “Party With A Purpose\,” the survivors had the opportunity to meet NFL legends from around the League and sample dishes from some of the best chefs in the country. \nKathy O’Brien of Westfield\, New Jersey\, thought her eyes were playing tricks on her. She was driving her three kids to school two years ago when she noticed that the stop sign was blurry. Her eye doctor sent her to a retina specialist\, who spotted six tumors in her left eye and four in her right. The next day — after a battery of tests including an MRI and a CT scan — Kathy was in an oncologist’s office\, blindsided by news that was beyond shocking: She had stage IV lung cancer. “Never in a million years did I think I’d hear something like that\,” says Kathy\, who had recently run her fifth marathon and had become certified as a Bar Method exercise instructor. “It seemed impossible because I had never smoked.” Read more: www.fitnessmagazine.com/health/body/head-to-toe/lung-cancer-in-non-smokers/ \nAbraham Almanza \nIn 1998\, I was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer at the age of 15. I would later turn 16 in the hospital not knowing if I would live to see my 17th birthday. \nBeing the son of a smoker (who through Gods grace has now quit)\, my initial thought was that secondhand smoke had something to do with my diagnosis. The doctors could never pinpoint the exact cause of my cancer but would later tell me it was probably acquired in utero and it just happened to lodge itself in my lungs. Whatever the case may be\, I had cancer and needed to fight to see another birthday. \nThrough the power of prayer\, family and medicine I was successfully treated with 4 rounds of chemotherapy and radiation treatment.\nTeam Draft’s Survivor Series strives to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local and national level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of lung cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nSpecial thanks to the Taste of the NFL for joining Team Draft in making this experience possible. \nTeam Draft\, an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation\, is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The fact is\, anybody can get lung cancer. Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked—including Keasha Rutledge Draft—are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. Team Draft is out to change all that. “If we can take away the stigma that says you have to be a smoker to get lung cancer\, we have a real chance to educate people about the true nature of the disease\,” explains Draft. \nSince Chris and Keasha launched Team Draft at their wedding in November of 2011\, Team Draft has been on a mission to tackle cancer. Team Draft’s national campaign to raise public awareness and share the hope that now exists for those diagnosed with the disease has taken it to over 70 of the top cancer research and treatment facilities in North America. \n“Our hope is not only to positively impact research funding\, but to improve the quality of life for those affected by lung cancer\,” says Draft. “We aren’t fighting against lung cancer\, we’re fighting for people. That’s why we are leading this national campaign to change the face of lung cancer.” \nAbout The Chris Draft Family Foundation and Team Draft\nThe Chris Draft Family Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to strengthening communities by empowering families to live healthy lifestyles. The Foundation focuses on several initiatives with overarching themes that stress the importance of education\, healthy lifestyles\, character development\, personal responsibility\, self-discipline\, and physical fitness. To learn more about the Foundation\, please visit www.chrisdraftfamilyfoundation.org. \nThrough its Team Draft initiative\, the Foundation is carrying on Keasha’s fight to tackle cancer by promoting awareness\, research\, and scholarship and to save lives by changing the face of lung cancer. Team Draft is dedicated to raising awareness\, accelerating research for a cure\, and giving hope\, comfort\, and inspiration to the patients\, caregivers\, and healthcare providers who are battling the disease every day.
