DESCRIPTION:Minneapolis\, MN. November 2013\, the Minnesota VA joined seven other VA locations for the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) lung cancer screening pilot program. The nationwide screening program is committed to finding lung cancers early in their high-risk veteran population. \nVA Set to Begin CT Lung Cancer Screenings in Veterans After Success in Medical Trial \nPosted by Doug Karr \nThe United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is taking an active role in the early detection\, and ultimately\, treatment of lung cancer in veterans. Inspired by the success of the National Cancer Institute’s National Lung Screening Trial\, the VA is in the beginning stages of implementing CT scans. \nAs reported by DOTmed News\, the VA will start “phased implementation” of the CT screenings for lung cancer at six VA hospitals. In a statement sent to DOTmed\, the VA has yet to publicly announce which VA hospitals will participate or when the program will begin. \nMoreover\, the veterans who participate at the initial six VA hospitals will provide feedback that will allow the department to plan a system-wide program and how to best manage it. The VA wants to ensure that the entire scope of the program – from the screening itself to receiving a potential diagnosis – is handled in such a way that it alleviates veterans’ concerns instead of adding to it. \nThe National Cancer Institute’s National Lung Screening Trial which published its results in November 2010\, found that a low-dose helical or spiral CT scans were more successful at spotting lung cancer than chest x-rays. \nFurther\, the National Cancer Institute looked at 53\,454 “current or former heavy smokers” and found that with a CT scan\, there was a 20% reduction in deaths from lung cancer. \nBased off of the success of the National Lung Screening Trial\, the VA hopes to identify potentially high risk veterans who were current or former heavy smokers through early CT screenings. \nFor veterans\, in particular\, lung cancer is not solely linked to smoking. While on active duty\, many veterans were exposed to chemical agents\, toxins and other hazardous materials that could lead to lung cancer. One of the most common toxins active duty service members were exposed to was asbestos. \nOver the years\, many veterans from all branches\, were unintentionally exposed to asbestos while protecting their country. However\, Navy veterans who were stationed at shipyards\, built ships or served on ships were especially vulnerable to asbestos exposure. \nCommonly thought to cause mesothelioma\, asbestos exposure is linked to lung cancer. They will be cheered on by Team Draft Co-Founder and Former Atlanta Falcon Chris Draft and Kiersten Dickson\, a local 20 year old lung cancer survivor.  \nLinda Wortman:  \nMy name is Linda Wortman and I’m a nonsmoker. I flew for Northwest Airlines for 35 years. I began my career in 1973. January 11\, 2008\, I was diagnosed with non small cell Lung Cancer. I never realized the unknown devastating health risks associated with second hand smoke! Do you? Two years prior to my diagnosis\, I questioned\, Do I have SARS or TB?… My local doctors office would just send me home with a ZPac Rx\, for my annoying cough & choking symptoms. Also saying\, “You don’t need a chest x-ray”! … My physical exam at Mayo Clinic is where I finally found the answers.\nThanks to the grace of God\, my loving husband Jerry and wonderful medical care at Mayo Clinic\, I am a lung cancer survivor. \n\nLinda Wortman is Changing the Face of Lung Cancer \n\nKristen Carlton:\nI was diagnosed with Stage 1 Lung Cancer in July 2013. I had no symptoms\, but my tumor showed up on a CT done for kidney stones. On Aug 14\, 2013\, I had my tumor and left lower lobe removed. Fortunately\, my cancer was caught early and had not spread to my lymph nodes. Now 11-weeks post surgery\, I am training to run my third half-marathon. I am determined to finish. Lung cancer survivors Fawn Lee (Stanford Cancer Institute) and Don Stranathan (Kaiser Santa Rosa) will kickoff Lung Cancer Awareness Month at the SAP Center in Downtown San Jose. As part of our A Survivor At Every Rink\, the survivors will watch the Sharks take on the New York Islanders and will also give out facts about lung cancer during the intermissions. \nFawn Lee: \nOn February 4\, 2011\, Fawn Lee received a call from her doctor asking her to come in right away. Being a mother of three young children and having just went through a move\, Fawn scheduled a time later on that day to go in. The day before\, she had gotten an X-ray and so she assumed that he just wanted to go over the finding. She was worried but didn’t realize what significance the call made in her life. This was a call that would set into motion a new battle that no one ever thinks is waiting in the midst for them\, ready to rear its ugly head if life calls upon it.\nRead more: https://www.teamdraft.org/survivorstories/fawn-lee-is-changing-the-face-of-lung-cancer/ \nDon Stranathan: \nI was diagnosed with Stage 4 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer in June of 2009. I have had numerous treatments of radiation and chemotherapy for the lung cancer\, and six cycles of Genzar for metastasis to my liver. I am one of the fortunate few because only 16.8 % ever reach the five year mark. I am stable today because of the targeted therapy pill Tarceva that I have been taking for almost five years.\nAll through my journey I have kept a positive attitude\, good nutrition and plenty of exercise. I try to live my life by spiritual principles. I feel they all play an important part in my recovery and the reason I am still above ground. The bad news is that I have cancer\, the good news is that cancer has taught me to live life to the fullest. I never allow cancer to define me. I rarely miss an opportunity to hike\, bike\, or do anything that strengthens my immune system and keeps me out in nature. \nIn October 2011 I met Penny Blume\, the love of my life\, on a lung cancer support community on Inspire. Penny left this earth on 1-21-2014 after battling small cell lung cancer\, for the previous 32 months. Penny and I spent our time together traveling back and forth from New York to California. She passed at my home in Santa Rosa\, CA\, after trying one last clinical trial at Stanford Cancer Center.\nPenny and I turned to each other for emotional support to battle our cancers and fell in love. It was after a couple of months of texting and chatting on social media that we decided to meet. She was driving her three kids to school two years ago when she noticed that the stop sign was blurry. Her eye doctor sent her to a retina specialist\, who spotted six tumors in her left eye and four in her right. The next day — after a battery of tests including an MRI and a CT scan — Kathy was in an oncologist’s office\, blindsided by news that was beyond shocking: She had stage IV lung cancer. “Never in a million years did I think I’d hear something like that\,” says Kathy\, who had recently run her fifth marathon and had become certified as a Bar Method exercise instructor. “It seemed impossible because I had never smoked.” \nNovember is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. By the time the initiative concluded at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii\, more than 30 lung cancer survivors representing 30 cancer centers and nearly every NFL team had participated. Given the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, we have expanded it beyond the NFL to the NBA\, the NHL and MLS—and this year\, London\, UK! DESCRIPTION:Tempe\, AZ. Sedona\, AZ native lung cancer survivor Andy Bonnett will represent Team Draft at the ASU vs. WSU game today\, as a part of Team Draft A Survivor at Every College Stadium initiative. \nAndy Bonnett: \nPhysicians at the University of Colorado Hospital are finding startling success with medications that are made to match the genes of a particular lung cancer. The new strategy means the drugs work only on certain patients – but they can work really well. Researchers think the cancer-fighting drugs may tamp the disease for a few years\, and then the cancers may mutate and find a way around the medication. But years of healthy living is fantastic for people who’ve been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer\, which has a five-year survival rate of less than 3 percent. Dr. Ross Camidge of UCH says patient Andy Bonnett is a prime example of what one of this new strategy of “personalized medicine” can do. Two years ago Bonnett was one of those Stage 4 lung cancer patients. It was such a crazy month and I live so far away\, it’s hard to do too much for it….especially with Karley. I noticed some great strides\, but also noticed the continuous lack of national media coverage. In fact\, I can barely watch the national media because of all of the madness and hate right now. It’s tough\, because some of us just want to live. I don’t want to debate. I just want to live a happy life\, spend time with my family and friends. The national media is focused so much on some very important issues\, but they also have the power to spin things and have the power to help things from getting out of control. I don’t understand all of the hate. It makes me sad for all of us and scares me for the future. \nI feel like it’s dividing people when we should be coming together. In the words of the great Dr. Martin Luther King\, Jr. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that”. “I have decided to stick to love…hate is to great a burden to bear.” It’s 2014 people. Let’s come together to solve issues that don’t belong in 1952. Hey…maybe a cure for cancer and other diseases.
