SUMMARY:Tackling Lung Cancer Reception: Chicago\, IL
DESCRIPTION:View Photos \nChicago\, IL. Chicago area lung cancer survivor-advocates will join Jill Feldman and Team Draft for a night of fellowship at the Park Tavern in near O’Hare airport.. The dinner\, sponsored by Myriad\, will give the survivors a chance to mingle with other survivors\, and lung cancer experts from across the Chicago metro area. \nJill Feldman\, Chicago Lung Cancer Survivor-Advocate   \nHope is a word that I never used to associate with lung cancer because in my experience there was only false hope\, or no hope at all. But\, there have been more advancements in lung cancer research in the past 7 years than the 30 years prior. I have options that my mom\, dad and so many others didn’t like targeted therapy and focused radiation. That gives me hope. \nTo educate and raise awareness and funds for lung cancer research we always focus on the alarming statistics and how the disease is underfunded\, but those of us who are diagnosed with lung cancer are not just a disease and we’re not a statistic; we are the true faces\, the real stories\, of lung cancer\, and while each of us has our own personal story\, we all really want the same story – a story of HOPE!\n \nRead more… \nAs part of our National Campaign to change the face of lung cancer\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each dinner and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nWe kicked off our 3rd Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge on November 1st\, 2016\, which will build on the success of our established Survivor Series by using the games at the heart of that initiative to create buzz for the Super Bowl Challenge and\, in turn\, funds for research and awareness. \nJOIN our Super Bowl Challenge: https://www.crowdrise.com/2017SuperBowlChallenge \nSpecial thanks to the Myriad\, Jill Feldman\, Park Tavern and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:Survivor at Every Stadium: Atlanta Falcons
DESCRIPTION:View Photos \nAtlanta\, GA. ATL lung cancer survivor-advocate\, and 4th place Super Bowl Challenge winner\, Patty Watkins represented Team Draft at the NFC Championship game. Patty watched the Atlanta Falcons defeat the Green Bay Packers in the final game at the Georgia Dome. \nMy name is Patty Watkins wife & mom and I’m a Stage 4 Lung Cancer Survivor/Advocate/WARRIOR. Diagnosed 34 months ago on Jan. 29th at age 57 in otherwise perfect health & totally out of the blue one day. I walked 4 miles a day and participated in group classes 3 x week at the YMCA. I was totally blindsided. Statistics told me that my 5 year survival rate would be in the 1%. But\, I don’t believe it! Thanks to the power prayers from prayer warriors to a loving God\, incredibly knowledgeable doctors\, nurses and cancer researchers looking for precision targeted medicine- I live. All of those key elements have enabled me to live this last 3 years in a fairly normal and very joyful way. I am only one of the MANY faces of lung cancer that are pleading for more funding going into research and new cutting edge targeted drugs to treat this insidious disease that claims more lives that any other cancer! Research\, clinical trials with new agents and diagnostic screening are key in eradicating the disease that is the #1 KILLER. \nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor Series initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nOur Survivor at Every Stadium\, leverages our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players with our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country. As a part of our International Campaign\, the games allow us to celebrate our survivors\, raise lung cancer awareness\, and give hope to those battling the disease\, as well as shine a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \n\nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nWe kicked off our 3rd Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge on November 1st\, 2016\, which builds on the success of our established Survivor Series by using the games at the heart of that initiative to create buzz for the Super Bowl Challenge and\, in turn\, funds for research and awareness. \nIt’s the NFC playoffs & final game to be played Atlanta Falcon’s stadium\, Sunday the 22nd!  I’ll be one of many thousands of people milling around in the crowd and with my Falcon’s shirt\, blending in\, cheering them on to victory.  No one will know that I have stage 4 lung cancer (which is the #1 Killer of all cancers).  I am one of the fortunate ones that have a targeted therapy drug for my very rare (1%) genetic mutation\, thanks to lung cancer research. I have been blessed by 36 months of life after being diagnosed in Jan 2014. The odds told me I had a 50% chance of only living 8 months past diagnosis & a 15% chance of living 5 years.\n \n Lung cancer research funding is shamefully dismal\, being a mere 10% of what is spent on breast cancer (whose patients have a 89% chance of surviving 5 years). The survival rate of breast cancer patients vs. lung cancer patients is a direct correlation of the money spent on research in each group.  The reason for the differential is due to the stigma that lung cancer is caused by smoking\, which is a total fallacy as 60% of all new lung cancer cases are non-smokers or never smokers. Lung cancer kills 4 X more people than breast\, and 3 X more than colorectal cancer(the 2nd leading cause of cancer in the U.S.)   I’m proud to represent Team Draft at the NFC this Sunday and help change the face of lung cancer.\n \nIn an effort to help fund more research I have been participating in the Super Bowl Challenge for Lung Cancer 2017 as part of TEAM DRAFT by raising money that will go directly to the Emory Winship Cancer Center-Cabral Franklin Fund. The Cabral Fund targets money only for lung cancer research.  It’s very important that the money I’m raising will not only directly impact my own survival but also the survival of many others fighting this endless battle.  Atlanta’s Emory Winship Cancer Institute needs to be the TOP in national rankings of cancer research institutes\, regarding new therapies targeting lung cancer. Will you help Winship Cancer Institute RISE UP to the top!?  You can be part of the change and contribute to the Cabral Fund to help put an end to this disease that took Cabral’s young life less than 16 months ago. I’ve already raised $6100 so far in less than 2 months.\n Please see my link for donation: Click here to support ATLANTA FAN Superbowl Challenge -Funding WINSHIP CANCER INSTITUTE- CABRAL FRANKLIN RESEARCH FUND by Patty watkins\n  \n\n\nSpecial thanks to the Atlanta Falcons\, Astra Zeneca\, Wilmot Family\, and all of our Team Draft supporters for helping make this event possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer! \n \n

SUMMARY:Dirk Bosgraf is Heading to the 2017 NFL Pro Bowl!
DESCRIPTION:View Photos \nWilliamstown\, West Virginia. The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (The James) lung cancer survivor-advocate Dirk Bosgraf was the 1st runner-up in Team Draft’s 2017 Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge. Dirk and his family went to Orlando\, Florida to represent Team Draft at 2017 NFL Pro Bowl. \nI’m incredibly honored to have had so much support from family and friends in this year’s Team Draft Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge. Not only was it an important opportunity to raise awareness about lung cancer and increase badly needed research funding\, but will also given me the blessing of creating some lifelong memories with my family at this year’s Pro Bowl! Fighting cancer has always been a team effort for me and this is just one more example. Together with organizations like The James Cancer Center\, Team Draft and LUNGevity we’re creating a strong network of hope and creating the possibility of winning the fight against lung cancer! \nFounded by Draft and his late wife Keasha\, who died of lung cancer in 2011 at the age of 38\, Team Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding through its Campaign To Change The Face Of Lung Cancer\, which is committed to shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The centerpiece of Team Draft’s Campaign is its annual Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge. \nThe Super Bowl Challenge participants were part of a friendly competition\, with the top fundraisers awarded trips to Super Bowl LI\, the NFL Pro-Bow\, the Taste of the NFL\, and the NFC Championship game. Jeremy and the other winners\, announced on January 2\, 2017\, will have an opportunity to share their powerful stories with key individuals with influence from across the country. \nAs Draft explains\, “the Super Bowl Challenge gives us a unique opportunity to use the overwhelming media coverage surrounding the Super Bowl as a platform to raise critical public awareness about lung cancer on an international level.  With the game as a backdrop\, we can use each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of lung cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.”  And Team Draft’s efforts are paying off. \nIn addition to raising critical public awareness\, the Super Bowl Challenge also raises funds for lung cancer organizations and treatment centers across North America.  Last year\, participants who raised more than $1\,000 during the Super Bowl Challenge were able to commit 50% of the funds they raised to a lung cancer organization or cancer center of their choice. \nThanks to the overwhelming success of our annual Super Bowl Challenge\, Team Draft is maintaining its commit to 50% if the survivors raise over $1\,000\, but if survivors raise over $5\,000\, their designated beneficiary will receive 80% with the remaining 20% going to support Team Draft’s mission to change the face of lung cancer. \nDirk has designated his funds to be split between Lungevity and The James. The challenge is over\, but the fundraising will continue until Super Bowl Sunday. https://www.crowdrise.com/2017SuperBowlChallenge

SUMMARY:Tackling Lung Cancer Reception: Orlando\, Florida
DESCRIPTION:View Photos \nOrlando\, FL. It was Pro Bowl week and Team Draft was in Orlando\, FL. Central Florida lung cancer survivor-advocates joined Team Draft for a night of fellowship at the TAP Room at Dubsdread in central Orlando. The dinner\, sponsored by Myriad\, gave the survivors a chance to mingle with other survivors\, meet our second place winner of Team Draft’s 2017 Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge\, Dirk Bosgraf\, and converse with Team Draft co- founder Chris Draft. \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each dinner and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \n2017 Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge \nThe winners for Team Draft’s Third Annual Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge were announced on January 2\, 2017. This unique fund raising challenge gives lung cancer survivors the opportunity to raise funds for public awareness and cutting-edge research that is giving new hope to those battling this often misunderstood disease. The top three fundraisers were awarded trips to Super Bowl LI\, the NFL Pro-Bowl\, the Taste of the NFL and the NFC Championship. The survivors\, Jeremy Smallwood\, Dirk Bosgraf\, and Lisa Moran have an opportunity to share their powerful stories with key individuals with influence from across the country. \n“The day my wife was diagnosed with lung cancer\, she made the decision to live each day to the fullest\,” says Draft. He goes on to explain that “when you’re in what is literally a life and death struggle like Keasha and I were in\, you realize moments matter\,”—moments like the trip Chris and Keasha took to Dallas to watch the Super Bowl shortly after her diagnosis. \n“It was something she had always wanted to do\,” says Draft\, “and being with her at that game is a memory I will cherish forever.” Now\, Team Draft is giving other lung cancer survivors the opportunity to create similar memories through its Super Bowl Challenge. \nAs part of our National Campaign to change the face of lung cancer\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nAbout The Chris Draft Family and Team Draft \nThe Chris Draft Family Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to strengthening communities by empowering families to live healthy lifestyles. The Foundation focuses on several primary initiatives with overarching themes that stress the importance of education\, healthy lifestyles\, character development\, personal responsibility\, self-discipline and physical fitness. To learn more\, please visit www.chrisdraftfamilyfoundation.org. \nThrough its Team Draft initiative\, the Foundation is carrying on Keasha’s fight to tackle cancer by promoting cancer awareness\, research and scholarship\, and to saving lives by changing the face of lung cancer. Team Draft is dedicated to empowering people to live longer and live stronger. To learn more about Team Draft\, please visit www.teamdraft.org. \nTeam Draft is an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation created by nationally recognized health advocate and former NFL linebacker\, Chris Draft\, and his late wife\, Keasha\, during Keasha’s year-long struggle with lung cancer. Their hope was that Keasha’s valiant fight to dance\, smile and live would give hope\, comfort and inspiration to the patients\, caregivers and healthcare providers who are battling the disease every day. \nWhile attending Clemson University\, Keasha was a member of the Rally Cat’s dance squad before graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation\, Keasha worked as an engineer while dancing for the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets before working in the pharmaceutical industry. She was an energetic\, vibrant young woman who had never smoked when she was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer in December 2010. At the time\, her only “symptom” was a slight shortness of breath a few days earlier. Despite the diagnosis and knowing the long odds they faced\, Keasha and Chris decided to fight back. On November 27\, 2011\, standing side-by-side\, they launched Team Draft at their wedding. One month later\, Keasha lost her courageous fight and died at the age of 38. \nTeam Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The fact is anybody can get lung cancer. Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked—including Keasha—are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. Team Draft is out to change all that by using the unique platform available to Chris as a former NFL player and nationally recognized community leader and health advocate to lead a National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer—a campaign that has taken us to more than 130 of the top cancer treatment and research centers in the United States and Canada.

The immediate thought that came to mind was the classic view of cancer and its treatment\, a short life of chemotherapy and radiation. Thankfully through the hardwork and donations to help fund improvements in treatment\, there have been so many advances. Now the doctors develop an individual treatment program for you\, through various tests a profile is created to find ways to target your particular affliction resulting in a greater likelihood of successful outcomes and in a better quality of life for the patient. There is also a focus on diet and mental health which keeps your system firing on all cylinders. I am thankful for all the great doctors\, nurses\, technicians\, and volunteers that have been there for us through it all. The kindness and caring shown to my wife and I by Lahey Hospital has been remarkable. With their constant support through these trying times\, it has enabled us to endure. It has allowed me to lead an almost normal life\, to enjoy the time I have left with the ones I love\, also enabling me to think past tomorrow\, to dream of future things to come. Providing me with opportunities such as this foundation\, help this great foundation raise funds for this necessary research. It would be so amazing if I get a once in a lifetime chance of going to the Super Bowl. To make it even more special\, the Super Bowl will take place in the state where I grew up\, and it would be the first time I make it back in about 30 years. \n \nAbout the Super Bowl LI \nSuper Bowl LI will be the 51st Super Bowl and the 47th modern-era National Football League (NFL) championship game. The American Football Conference (AFC) champion will play the National Football Conference (NFC) champion to decide the league champion for the 2016 season. The event will mark the 50th anniversary year of the first Super Bowl\, which was played on January 15\, 1967. \nSuper Bowl LI is scheduled for Sunday\, February 5\, 2017\,[3] at NRG Stadium in Houston\, Texas\, and will be the third time the Super Bowl has been played in Houston\, after Super Bowl VIII in 1974 and Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004. It will be televised nationally in the United States by Fox[4][5] and Fox Deportes.[6][7][8] \nThe Super Bowl LI halftime show will be headlined by Lady Gaga. \n  \nAbout the Taste of the NFL  \nSince 1992\, the Taste of the NFL (a 501c3 organization) has rallied the country’s top chefs and the NFL’s greatest players to raise money in support of food banks throughout the United States. \nThis is done through via three avenues: \n• on-line donations during the KICK HUNGER CHALLENGE® (September – January) \n• locally hosted Taste Of The NFL events by an NFL team and their food bank featuring their players and local chefs \n• The Super Bowl Taste Of The NFL – The Party with a Purpose®.  Held on the eve of Super Bowl in the host city. This event is a unique way to experience exceptional cuisine\, meet NFL players and coaches\, and support our fight against hunger. \nThrough the efforts of hundreds of volunteers who help make “Taste of the NFL – Party With A Purpose” the single most successful charitable event at the Super Bowl\, the Taste of the NFL organization continues to help feed the 37 million Americans who have turned to their local food banks for assistance. Millions of needs\, thousands of families and dozens of new hunger projects have been affected by this major volunteer effort. Our goal: end hunger.

SUMMARY:Lisa Moran is heading to the 26th annual Taste of the NFL!
DESCRIPTION:Colorado Springs\, CO. University of Colorado Cancer Center lung cancer survivor-advocate Lisa Moran was the 2nd runner-up fundraiser in Team Draft’s 2017 Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge. Lisa and her boyfriend\, Jeremy\, are heading to Houston\, Texas to represent Team Draft at 26th annual Taste of the NFL. \nI’m excited to go to Houston and the Taste of the NFL. The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) has been a part of my life since the first few weeks of being diagnosed with stage iv lung cancer. Their support and research gives me hope for the future. The Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge is a chance to donate to their efforts and show my gratitude. Thank you\, Team Draft! \nThe Super Bowl Challenge participants were part of a friendly competition\, with the top fundraisers awarded trips to Super Bowl LI\, the NFL Pro-Bowl and the Taste of the NFL. Lisa and the other winners\, announced on January 2\, 2017\, will have an opportunity to share their powerful stories with key individuals with influence from across the country. \nLisa has designated his funds to go to IASLC. The challenge is over\, but the fundraising will continue until Super Bowl Sunday. https://www.crowdrise.com/2017SuperBowlChallenge \n \nAbout Lisa Moran \nIn August 2015\, the first week of Browns preseason football\, at 44 years old\, I went from having an active\, healthy\, life to finding out I have incurable\, inoperable\, terminal\, stage iv lung cancer. \nIt was football season when I was first diagnosed and started my treatment. I had very low energy levels and I was adjusting to my targeted therapy side effects. I was scared to make plans outside of the house. But every week I went out to watch the Browns with the Pikes Peak Browns Backers. Lung cancer treatment could take my energy. But it wasn’t going to take away my Browns. \nBecause of lung cancer research\, we know my cancer has a specific targeted therapy. I’m still active\, otherwise healthy\, and able to work full time\, at a job I love\, carrying mail on walking routes\, because of my current therapy. But my therapy will eventually quit working against my cancer. Lung cancer research is vital for my future and my quality of life. \nMy fundraiser will benefit the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer in Denver\, CO (IASLC). Just weeks after finding out I have stage iv lung cancer I attended my first lung cancer event. It was hosted by the IASLC. That event gave me hope\, inspiration and the thoughts of possibly having an enjoyable quality of life while living with a terminal disease. \nAbout the Taste of the NFL  \nSince 1992\, the Taste of the NFL (a 501c3 organization) has rallied the country’s top chefs and the NFL’s greatest players to raise money in support of food banks throughout the United States. SUMMARY:Tackling Lung Cancer Reception: Houston\,TX
DESCRIPTION:Houston\, TX. It’s Super Bowl week and Team Draft headed to Houston\, TX. Local lung cancer survivor-advocates joined Team Draft\, and some of Houston’s world renown doctors for a night of fellowship at Tango & Malbec by the Galleria Mall. The dinner\, sponsored by Myriad\, gave the survivors a chance to mingle with other survivors\, and learn from lung cancer experts from around the Texas Medical Center. In addition to mingling with other local survivors and doctors\, the survivors had a chance meet the top three winners from Team Draft’s 2017 Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge and converse with Team Draft co- founder Chris Draft– Atlanta Falcons Legend and recently confirmed Public Director of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. \n  \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each dinner and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \n \n

SUMMARY:Elizabeth Dessureault - 2017 Super Bowl Challenge Check Presentation - BJALCF
DESCRIPTION:San Carlos\, CA. Lung cancer survivor-advocate Elizabeth Dessureault chose the Bonnie J. Addario Lung Cancer Foundation – Young Lung Study as her beneficiary of the funds that she raised during Team Draft’s 2017 Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge. \n“Anyone with lungs can get lung cancer\,” Elizabeth Dessureault liked to say. \n“I’m hoping that by sharing my story with others that I’m able to change the face of lung cancer to show that a 26-year-old\, non-smoking\, new-mom-to-be can get lung cancer\, then anybody can.” \nDessureault was pregnant and working as a teacher in Fort McMurray\, Alta.\, when she was diagnosed in April 2015 with advanced stage non-small cell adenocarcinoma lung cancer. She moved back to Ottawa to be near family after a doctor gave her a year to live. But she vowed to fight the disease\, to enjoy life with her new son\, Jack\, and her husband\, Dax\, an RCMP officer and former standout Ottawa Gee-Gees basketball star. \nThat her fight ended Saturday morning in hospital in Ottawa has devastated her friends and family and thousands of followers who found support and encouragement on her ‘From Lizzie’s Lungs’ health blog and Facebook page. \nShe was 27. \n“We are all desperately sad here today. She leaves a huge impression on all the people she touched\,” said Dr. Paul Wheatley-Price\, president of Lung Cancer Canada and an oncologist at the Ottawa Hospital Cancer Centre. \n\n“That’s what Lizzie did so effectively — to bring to the public eye in that lung cancer can affect anyone. Such a beautiful young woman and such a positive attitude. She really just lit up every environment she was in.”\n\n\nFounded by Draft and his late wife Keasha\, who died of lung cancer in 2011 at the age of 38\, Team Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding through its Campaign To Change The Face Of Lung Cancer\, which is committed to shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The centerpiece of Team Draft’s Campaign is its annual Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge. \n“The Super Bowl Challenge achieves amazing things in terms of public awareness and changing perceptions about lung cancer\,” says Dr. Ross Camidge\, the Director of Thoracic Oncology at Colorado University Cancer Center\, the cancer center where two of last year’s Super Bowl Challenge winners were treated. \nIn addition to raising critical public awareness\, the Super Bowl Challenge also raises funds for lung cancer organizations and treatment centers across North America.  Last year\, participants who raised more than $1\,000< during the Super Bowl Challenge were able to commit 50% of the funds they raised to a lung cancer organization or cancer center of their choice. \nThanks to the overwhelming success of our annual Super Bowl Challenge\, Team Draft is maintaining its commit to 50% if the survivors raise over $1\,000\, but if they raise over $5\,000\, their designated beneficiary will receive 80% with the remaining 20% going to support Team Draft’s mission to change the face of lung cancer. \nOf this aspect of the Super Bowl Challenge\, Dr. Camidge says\, “you need somebody working on the national level. You need somebody working on the local level. Everybody wins.” \nFor the survivors who participate\, the Super Bowl Challenge is so much more than just a fundraiser. \n“Team Draft has really helped boost our family’s spirits during this challenging time\,” says Dr. Lucy Kalanithi. In 2015\, Lucy and her husband\, Dr. Paul Kalanithi\, won Team Draft’s inaugural Super Bowl Challenge and were able to join Team Draft in Phoenix\, Arizona for Super Bowl 49.  Paul went on to write the bestselling memoir When Breath Becomes Air — a powerful and moving chronicle of his life and lung cancer journey — before passing away at the age of 37. \n2016 Super Bowl Challenge winner\, Kim Ringen says\, “As a lung cancer survivor\, I would highly recommend to anybody to put your hat in the ring because it is so uplifting to be associated with a group of people that are coming together to make a difference.” \nTo learn more about Team Draft’s 2017 Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge\, make a donation\, visit https://www.crowdrise.com/2017SuperBowlChallenge. \nSpecial thanks to the Jon Wilmot and the Wilmot Family\, NFL\, Astra Zeneca\, and all of our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible. \nAbout Team Draft  \nTeam Draft\, an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation\, is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.”  Despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, Team Draft is out to change all that. SUMMARY:Rest in Peace Elizabeth Dessureault
DESCRIPTION:Young Ontario mother who ‘changed the face of lung cancer’ dies at 27: ‘I was just so close to that miracle’\nBlair Crawford\, Postmedia News | February 28\, 2017 | \n“Anyone with lungs can get lung cancer\,” Elizabeth Dessureault liked to say. \nShe was 27.\n“We are all desperately sad here today. She really just lit up every environment she was in.”\n\nDessurault was five months pregnant when she began chemotherapy treatment. Her treatment continued after Jack was born\, two months early. She wrote about his birth in an August 2016 blog post. \n“That day was filled with so much happiness and love. It was also filled with fear – Fear of not getting to see my son grow and fear of missing out on so many of his life’s ‘firsts.’ We recently celebrated his first birthday – a day that I was so afraid of missing. I feel as though I am living on borrowed time and am so unbelievably grateful to be here to share each day with him.” \nShe signed each post with a sunny ‘Lizzie xo.’ \n“She really understood the diagnosis and understood it was a battle\,” said Chris Draft\, a former National Football League player who befriended Dessureault and her family after reading about her in a November 2015 Citizen story. \n“From the beginning she accepted it and moved forward with her very positive mindset. It allowed her to make the most of every day\, but at the same time to be realistic\,” said the former linebacker\, whose Chris Draft Family Foundation encourages healthy living\, particularly around asthma and lung cancer. Draft’s “supremely fit” wife\, Keasha\, died in 2011 at age 37\, less than a year after being diagnosed with lung cancer. \n\nRelated\n\n‘There’s more to life’: Wife’s cancer treatment put hockey into perspective for Ottawa Senators’ Craig Anderson\n\n\nThat Dessureault was able to have her baby while undergoing cancer treatment\, and enjoy nearly two years of life after her diagnosis\, shows that progress is being made in treating the disease\, Draft said. \n“It says a lot about the advances that have been made. It’s very hard to see\, but it’s very important to see\,” he said. “When the drugs are working\, your quality of life can be tremendous. That’s what hope looks like. But the fact that Liz passed shows there’s a still a lot of work to do.” \nThere was no history of lung cancer for Dessureault\, a Cornwall\, Ont.\, native and former teacher. She grew up in a non-smoking household and there were no hints of a genetic predisposition to the disease. \nThough there is a strong correlation between smoking and lung cancer\, fully 15 per cent of those diagnosed with the disease have never smoked. Lung cancer kills on average 10\,000 women a year in Canada\, twice the number who die of breast cancer; more in fact\, than all other female cancers combined\, Wheatley-Price said. \nFrom the beginning she accepted it and moved forward with her very positive mindset \nThe five-year survival rate for someone with lung cancer is just 17 per cent\, compared to 85 per cent for breast cancer. Though lung cancer causes 25 per cent of cancer deaths in Canada\, it receives just seven per cent of the funding\, he said. \nDessureault was fortunate that her tumour had a rare genetic marker known as ROS 1\, which opened up the possibility of using a targeted treatment to attack the tumour with very little side effects. \nDessureault and her family were able to visit Disney World and took a Caribbean cruise during her illness. She and Dax were Draft’s guests at a 2016 Super Bowl party in San Francisco. She sold ‘Just Breathe’ bracelets and handbags to raise awareness. From Lizzie’s Lungs was named the top health blog of 2016. \nBut the good news turned bad last fall. \n“These past two weeks have been incredibly challenging\,” she wrote in November. “Unfortunately\, last Tuesday we learned that the drug that I had taken since February\, Lorlatinib\, was no longer working and I had progression of disease… This time to both lungs. \n“Despite the fact that we always knew that this could happen (and with lung cancer\, there was a very high probability)\, I was just so close to that miracle. My NED (no evidence of disease) status was taken away from me much sooner than I had hoped.” \nLiving with cancer was her “new normal\,” she wrote. \n“Despite everything that has happened … I absolutely love my life. I consider myself to be one of the luckiest people in the world because I am surrounded by the most amazing people.” \nIn December she wrote that the cancer had spread to her bones and she was developing blood clots. \n“On the bright side\, my brain scan was clear! (I’ll take wins where I can get them!).” \nDessureault knew that people looked to her for inspiration\, Draft said. She didn’t dwell on the hardest parts of her illness. \n“It was important for her to stay positive to inspire people\, so she didn’t want to go too deeply into where she was at\,” Draft said\, in a phone call from Atlanta. “She knew it was a battle. It was important to her to keep them upbeat.” \nElizabeth Dessureault’s funeral will be held Saturday\, March 4 at 2 p.m. at Knox St. Paul United Church in Cornwall. There is no visitation.

She still holds the school record for high jump. As a Clemson University student\, she was a well-loved classmate\, dancer for the Rallycats and was inducted into the Lambda Theta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority\, Inc. in the Spring of 1992. Keasha received her Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Clemson University in 1995. She began her career in engineering for Cutler-Hammer. The survivors\, and their spouses\, joined former Carolina Panther Chris Draft and other Panthers Alumni on the field before the game\, prior to heading up to the suites to watch the Carolina Panthers defeat the Houston Texans. #PanthersAlumniDay #KeepPounding \nThe Team Draft Survivor at Every Stadium gave us a chance to celebrate survivorship in a very unique and amazing way. We got to mingle with other Panther Alumni at the Championship Village.  We were provided a wonderful meal too.  The Top Cats came through Championship Village and we had our pictures taken with them.  We were also able to take a picture with Sir Purr.  After we ate\, we were escorted to the field via an underground tunnel.  I was totally amazed with the fact we actually got to walk through the same tunnel the players walk through. ~ Stuart & Susan Beam \n \nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor Series initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nOur Survivor at Every Stadium\, leverages our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players with our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country.
