Sally Kingsbury wrote the eulogy herself as she prepared to die from sarcoma\, a form of lung cancer\, in 2005. \n\nKingsbury admires his mom for displaying grace in using the eulogy to honor all of the people in her life as it drew to an end. He recites the eulogy’s opening line from memory: “It’s been one hell of a party\, Woodrow.” She cribbed that from The Lonesome Dove\, her favorite show. In life and in death\, it was her motto. \n\nKingsbury’s mom and dad\, the two biggest influences in his life\, were opposites. His dad\, Tim\, is a former high school football coach\, an alpha male Vietnam veteran. His mom was a free spirit with a permanent smile who delighted in being loud and boisterous and embarrassing her two boys (Kliff has an older brother\, Klint). \n\nSo idyllic was Kingsbury’s upbringing in New Braunfels\, Texas\, that he says\, “I have no excuse to ever do anything but live an amazing life considering the way I was raised.”\n\nHe briefly left the New York Jets to be with her in her last days. “She was really the only person I ever showed weakness to\,” he says. He talked to her about girl problems\, confidence issues\, whatever troubled him\, and she always listened.\n\n“I still talk to her a bunch\,” he says. “When I’m at home or before games\, I just kind of talk to her on my own.”\n\nSeeing her stay strong as she succumbed to the sarcoma\, and the loving way his dad took care of her\, changed Kingsbury.\n\n“I stopped worrying about things as much\, what people thought. Just cut loose. Watching her go through that\, how she handled it\, I’ll never have a bad day after that\,” he says. “To her last dying breath\, it was about\, ‘Hey\, make sure your dad’s OK\, make sure you’re OK. Are you going to be OK? Is your brother going to be OK?’ Not once was it about her. He has invited my husband John and I to attend Tuesday’s Avalanche game as a guest of TeamDraft. Something that we are truly looking forward to! I have had lung cancer for almost three years now. My treatments included eight hours of surgery\, 40 sessions of radiation\, and three courses of chemotherapy. The pain became so unmanageable that I have no recollection of last April! Dr. Kono persevered\, however and started me on Opdivo as soon as it was approved by the FDA. Since then my life has completely turned around!! The tumors have stabilized and my pain is managed with minimal drug therapy. John and I are enjoying traveling again including a vacation in Mexico. We plan on celebrating our 43rd anniversary this year in Las Vegas or Hawaii.\n\nWe are extremely grateful that you have initiated a national effort to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. Only through these efforts and dedicated doctors like Dr. Kono will we find a cure for this horrible disease. ~ Kim Aldridge\n\n\nThe survivors watched the Colorado Avalanche defeat the Calgary Flames 6-3.\n\nI was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in April 2014 and given 1 year to live. I was not a smoker and had been participating in triathlons in the years before my diagnosis. This life changing news caused a pivot in my focus but not a change in my positive outlook.\n\nPrior to my diagnosis\, I was a Senior Vice President of Technology Healthcare firm. After my diagnosis\, i took a leave of absence from work and focused on my treatment. I went through Platinum Chemo\, had radiation treatments on my brain and hoped for the best I wanted to make the most out of the time I have left. Dr Kono and Dr Doebele suggested a test by Foundations Medicine that might help with further treatments. I sent a tumor sample to Foundations Medicine to conduct a Genomic Profile and found out I was ALK positive. I just started Crizotinib and am hoping it buys me more time. Since my diagnosis I entered and MBA program that will complete in August and hope to continue skiing this season (last year I got 15 days in hoping for more this year!). She underwent a lower right lobe lobectomy\, followed by four months of chemotherapy\, and today receives regular CT scans to ensure that her cancer has not returned.\n\nThough she feels good now\, getting the treatment she needed was a huge challenge. Leah Bochnicek takes on many roles – mother\, wife\, co-worker\, and cancer patient.\n\n“It doesn’t matter how healthy you think you are\, your body is a crazy thing\,” Bochnicek said.\n\nShe developed an audible wheeze in her throat last summer\, which turned into a persistent cough. A chest X-ray revealed she had pneumonia\, even though doctors couldn’t hear it with a stethoscope.\n\n“And the reason they couldn’t hear it was because I had a tumor above the pneumonia that was blocking it off\,” she said.\n\nIn addition to the tumor\, surgery revealed spots on the exterior of her lung and nodules on the chest wall. Doctors diagnosed her with adenocarcinoma. Bochnicek said she has never smoked a day in her life.\n\n“No one can explain to me why I got lung cancer. What is it? They watched the Carolina Hurricanes defeat the Ottawa Senators. #HockeyFightsCancer #LCAM15 \n\n\nDusty Joy Donaldson\n\nIn September 2005\, at the age of 51\, Dusty Donaldson was diagnosed with lung cancer. It was then she learned the eye-opening facts about this disease and became a passionate advocate for lung cancer awareness\, research and early detection. For the first few years after her diagnosis\, Dusty volunteered with several nonprofits\, including the American Cancer Society\, National Lung Cancer Partnership\, Lung Cancer Alliance and others before founding a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in March 2010. The mission of the Dusty Joy Foundation is advancing lung cancer awareness\, early detection and compassion for people impacted by lung cancer. Dusty enjoys collaborating with other nonprofits focused on lung cancer advocacy\, including one of her favorites\, the Chris Draft Family Foundation. Dusty serves as co-leader of the Lung Cancer Action Network (LungCAN)\, a coalition of all the U.S.-based nonprofits dedicated to lung cancer.\n\nPrior to her diagnosis\, Dusty was a former journalist and public relations professional. She earned a BA in journalism from Norfolk State University and an MA in journalism from Regent University. She worked as a writer and editor before entering the field of public relations where she worked for Womble Carlyle and Wake Forest University. Dusty also earned a nonprofit management certificate from Duke University. She now uses her journalism and public relations skills to raise awareness about the number one cancer killer.\n\nTomma Hargraves\n\n Eight years after her diagnosis\, lung cancer survivor Tomma Hargraves is training to become a lay navigator with UNC Lineberger\, giving back to the hospital that she credits with saving her life.\n\nIn October of 2006\, Tomma Hargraves found a small lump in her neck. Although she felt very healthy\, she went to her doctor to have the lump checked out. A few days later\, she received a diagnosis that shocked her: Stage 3B non-small cell lung cancer. The tumor was in the right lobe of her lungs\, and the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes on the left side of her neck.\n\n“I wish I had known that non-smokers and people who had quit long ago could get lung cancer\,” says Hargraves. They watched a Thursday Night Football match up between the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills. #Tacklinglungcancer #LCAM15\n\n\nJohanna Medina\n\nAt age 39\, she had a finding on her chest X-ray and CT that many pulmonologists would have just assumed to be infectious in a non-smoker her age. Her pulmonologist\, Ben Harvey\, stuck with it though and eventually diagnosed her with lung cancer. Dr. Stiles performed what should be a curative resection on her two years ago and she has been disease free since. Johanna is a New York native and a mother of two young kids.\n\nDr. Brendon Stiles\n\nAs a thoracic surgeon at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City\, James Wood High School graduate Dr. Brendon Stiles saves patients from the same disease that claimed the life of his father\, former Frederick County Board of Supervisors Chairman Kenneth “Kenny” Stiles.\n\nIt has been 10 years and a couple of weeks since Stiles\, a dairy farmer in Clear Brook\, died of lung cancer at age 61. His son was at Winchester Medical Center on Wednesday afternoon giving a presentation about the latest developments in treating the deadly disease.\n\nA 1990 graduate of James Wood\, Stiles initially thought he’d be a veterinarian.\n\n“I grew up on a farm\, and I liked animals\, but then I realized I liked people more than animals\,” he said during an interview Wednesday morning.\n\nStiles’s twin brother\, Ryan\, is a lawyer in Wichita\, Kan. His mother\, Tricia\, is a legislative assistant for 27th District state Sen. Jill Vogel\,R-Upperville. After going to college and medical school at the University of Virginia\, Stiles completed a general surgery residency in Charlottesville as well. While a resident\, he took time out to do scientific research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NewYork. Stiles\, 42\, then did a cardiothoracic residency at Weill Cornell\, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Sloan Kettering. He has stayed on at Weill Cornell\, and in addition to being a thoracic surgeon\, he’s an associate professor\, and does clinical and basic science research.\n\n“Most of my practice is lung cancer\,” Stiles said. “I was sort of already on that path when [my father] got diagnosed\, but obviously\, that’s strengthened my resolve to take care of lung cancer patients. “It’s made a tremendous difference. The good news is that cancer has taught me to live life to the fullest. I never allow cancer to define me. I rarely miss an opportunity to hike\, bike\, or do anything that strengthens my immune system and keeps me out in nature.\n\nIn October 2011 I met Penny Blume\, the love of my life\, on a lung cancer support community on Inspire. Penny left this earth on Jan. 21\, 2014 after battling small cell lung cancer for 32 months. Penny and I spent our time together traveling back and forth from New York to California. She passed at my home in Santa Rosa\, Calif.\, after trying one last clinical trial at Stanford Cancer Center.\n\nPenny and I turned to each other for emotional support to battle our cancers and fell in love. It was after a couple of months of texting and chatting on social media that we decided to meet. Penny flew to California for her first visit in January 2012\, and the rest is history.\n\nMy relationship with Penny also marked the beginning of my advocacy work for lung cancer. It started when a friend of ours asked us to post our story on a lung cancer survivors group on Facebook. I posted something\, and then Penny and I decided to repost it on Inspire\, since it was the site that brought us together. In September 2012 our story was shared by ABC News and Good Morning America. On March 5\, 2014\, my life changed forever when I was diagnosed with stage IV non- small cell lung cancer. I didn’t have any symptoms and my diagnosis was an incidental finding from another routine test. It (my diagnosis) came as quite a shock because I was a healthy\, active person who enjoyed running\, skiing and hiking\, and never smoked.\n\nMy tumor was tested and it came back positive for a mutation. This is when mutations are good. In fact\, when one of my doctors found out about my mutation\, she came into my office with the results in her hand\, jumping up and down\, almost in tears\, saying “This changes everything!!” And she was right. My tumor came back ALK positive meaning I could benefit from targeted therapy. The targeted therapy was an ALK inhibitor called Crizotinib. I have been on Crizotinib since April 2014. The drug has allowed me to live a relatively normal life. I experience some side effects\, but nothing that isn’t manageable. Because of the continued research and development in lung cancer\, I am confident that one day lung cancer will become more like a chronic disease rather than the death sentence it was once perceived to be. This cannot happen unless lung cancer gets the global support and funding needed to continue the research necessary to find a cure.\n\nI feel honored to represent Team Draft’s initiative\, A Survivor at Every Stadium\, to show the public that I am the face of stage IV lung cancer. I want to eliminate the stigma of lung cancer and to educate the public that anyone can get lung cancer; even folks like me who never smoked. If you have lungs\, you can get lung cancer. I started asking myself ‘what am I doing with my life?’ I think differently now. I always thought I had all the time in the world. Now\, I know I’d better get moving.”\n\nSince that time\, Jenny has gone to school on women and lung cancer. What she has learned has been shocking: More women will die of lung cancer than breast\, cervical and ovarian cancers combined. More non-smokers will die of lung cancer than those with melanoma\, brain and thyroid cancers combined. Most of those are women. A woman’s five-year survival rate for lung cancer is 18% versus breast cancer at 89%.\n\nSo Jenny got involved. She founded the Tennessee chapter of the Lung Cancer Alliance\, a Washington\, D.C.-based nonprofit working for more federally funded lung cancer research and dedicated solely to patient support and advocacy for people living with lung cancer or those at risk for the disease.\n\n“There’s no pink army for lung cancer like there is for breast cancer\,” she said. “So\, I’m creating our own army.”\n\n“People assume if you have a lung cancer diagnosis that you smoke\,” she said\, “and they stop listening. Lung cancer research is minimal and grossly underfunded. I absolutely love St. Simons Community Church and the family of people we’ve grown with there. I reached out because Karley recently told me that she felt like she needed more faith\, it wasn’t strong enough.\n\nI totally understood. How could it be strong enough to understand your mom has stage 4 lung cancer when you’re only 10? Why would God do this to us?\n\nWell\, I want everyone\, including Karley\, to understand. All of our days are numbered. We are all going to die one day\, some sooner than others. What is important is that we live the way He would want us to live. There is a purpose for all of us. Mine may be this blog\, reaching out and helping people\, raising my girl\, I don’t know. And I won’t know until I’m at those pearly gates. Neither will any of you. So\, I do have complete faith in my healing. But\, where that healing takes place\, that is up to God. That is something we do not have control over\, so what is the sense in worrying?\n\nThat’s what I want Karley to know. I will be fine. Whether it be here or in heaven. She doesn’t have to worry about me. Yes\, I get sad because I worry about her\, but I can’t control what happens. I only pray that she is fine without me one day. She’s a strong girl and I pray she will continue to have the love and support she needs to deal with the big things that come her way. She’s been through so much.\n\nWe are going back to that counselor 12/1 to both talk to her. She was so helpful. If I can play a role in helping\, then I am pleased to do so.” \nI was diagnosed with Anaplastic Large Cell Kinase (ALK) in June 2014. In May of 2014\, I had a cough that got progressively worse. My ENT had me get with my primary care doctor to have an X-ray. The X-ray showed that I had a 2 1/3’ mass on my upper left lobe. I had surgery to remove the upper left lobe and three lymph nodes August 1\, 2014 by Dr. Robert Cerfolio. My Oncologist is Dr. Francisco Robert Vizcarrando. I had four chemotherapy sessions starting in September 2014 and ended in November 2014. After the surgery\, a blood clot was discovered in my pulmonary vein and I was on a blood thinner (Enoxaparin) until February/March 2015. But\, as smoking rates decline\, people like Dessureault — young\, non-smokers\, often female — are increasingly being diagnosed with the cancer that is the deadliest and receives less research funding than other major cancers.\n\nWhile smoking is still the leading cause of lung cancer\, the majority of new patients are people who never smoked or no longer smoke\, according to a new report from Lung Cancer Canada\, which paints a picture of uneven treatment across the country\, poor early diagnosis and low research investment.\n\nDessureault’s case is typical of these new faces in some ways — by the time she was diagnosed\, her non-small-cell lung cancer was already well advanced. The first surgeon she saw told Dessureault there was nothing he could do and gave her a year to live. “It was very traumatizing.”\n\nWhat is far from typical is the fact that Dessureault was pregnant when she received the devastating diagnosis. Her son Jack — born two months early so that his mother could receive more aggressive treatment — is now a thriving four months old. Lung cancer often goes undiagnosed in its early stages and Edwina experienced no warning signs that it had spread to other areas of her body… \nBecause of Levine Cancer Institute’s integrated approach to cancer care delivery\, Edwina was able to receive all her care without leaving the Charlotte/Monroe area. It also kept her close to another integrated system – a circle of family members who all live along the same stretch of road in rural Monroe. \n“I’m the youngest of 11 children\,” said Edwina. “My family treated me the way I was acting – like everything was going to be all right. They kept encouraging me as if I wasn’t handed a bunch of bad news. Looking back on it\, I wonder\, ‘How did I do that? How did I make it through? It was God’s grace and mercy and the prayers of my loved ones that brought me through this. I could have never made it without God\, and the support of the Levine Cancer Institute Team.” \nRead the full story \nTomma \nEight years after her diagnosis\, lung cancer survivor Tomma Hargraves is training to become a lay navigator with UNC Lineberger\, giving back to the hospital that she credits with saving her life. \nIn October of 2006\, Tomma Hargraves found a small lump in her neck. Although she felt very healthy\, she went to her doctor to have the lump checked out. A few days later\, she received a diagnosis that shocked her: Stage 3B non-small cell lung cancer. The tumor was in the right lobe of her lungs\, and the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes on the left side of her neck. \n“I wish I had known that non-smokers and people who had quit long ago could get lung cancer\,” says Hargraves. I thought I had done everything right\, and I still got lung cancer.” \nAfter seeking several opinions and researching her treatment options\, Hargraves decided on UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Two things set UNC Lineberger apart for her. “I was offered an aggressive clinical trial that included chemo\, radiation and a targeted oral medication\,” she says. “But what I really loved about UNC was the team approach. I didn’t have to go from doctor to doctor. They all came to me in my room and talked to me about their roles: the radiation oncologist; the thoracic oncologist; the nurse navigator. The N.C. She was an energetic\, vibrant young woman who had never smoked when she was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer in December 2010. At the time\, her only “symptom” was a slight shortness of breath a few days earlier. Despite the diagnosis and knowing the long odds they faced\, Keasha and Chris decided to fight back. Billie celebrated her birthday by watching the Atlanta Hawks defeat the Philadelphia 76ers. #ASurvivorAtEveryArena #Changingthefaceoflungcancer \n\n\nCOVINGTON — When Covington resident Billie Jane Hood underwent a routine evaluation for knee replacement surgery at Piedmont Newton Hospital\, the last thing she expected to hear was that she had stage IV lung cancer.\n\n“I was never more shocked by anything in my life\,” Hood\, who is a lifelong nonsmoker\, said. “It was a wild roller coaster ride from the first PET scan to being told I had advanced stage lung cancer and then on to more tests. I told my doctor\, ‘I still have places to go and things to see.’”\n\nRead the full story\n\nTeam Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The fact is anybody can get lung cancer. Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked—including Keasha—are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. Team Draft is out to change all that by using the unique platform available to Chris as a former NFL player and nationally recognized community leader and health advocate to lead a National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer—a campaign that has taken us to more than 100 of the top cancer treatment and research centers in the United States and Canada.\n\nThrough our Survivor at Every Arena initiative\, we are working with all 30 NBA teams to have a lung cancer survivor from a local cancer center and their guests attend one of the team’s home games.\n\nOur goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local and national level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of lung cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.\n
