SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Stadium: Washington Redskins
DESCRIPTION:Washington\, DC. Three lung cancer survivors will join Redskins Nation on Sunday. Joseph Newcomb\, Tammie Alexander and Montessa Lee will represent Team Draft at FedEx Field\, as the Washington Redskins take on the San Diego Chargers. \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nNovember is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. In 2012\, Team Draft marked the occasion by launching our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nLeveraging our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, we arranged to have lung cancer survivors attend games at NFL stadiums across the country during the last two months of the 2012-2013 season. By the time the initiative concluded at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii\, more than 30 lung cancer survivors representing 30 cancer centers and nearly every NFL team had participated. Given the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, we have expanded it beyond the NFL to the NBA\, the NHL and MLS—and this year\, London\, UK! As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nSpecial thanks to the Washington Redskins\, Walter Reed Bethseda National Military Hospital\, Lombardi Cancer Center at Georgetown University\, and Washington Hospital for joining forces with Team Draft to make this experience possible. \n<P>Donate Now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:Duke Energy Building Shines WHITE for Lung Cancer Awareness
DESCRIPTION:Charlotte\, NC. When the sun sets in Uptown Charlotte\, the Duke Energy Building will shine WHITE in honor of Lung Cancer Awareness Month. For the second year in a row\, Team Draft has worked with @WellsLightsCLT to bring awareness about the state of lung cancer. \nTeam Draft\, an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation\, is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The fact is\, anybody can get lung cancer. Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked—including Keasha—are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. Team Draft is out to change all that. “If we can take away the stigma that says you have to be a smoker to get lung cancer\, we have a real chance to educate people about the true nature of the disease\,” explains Draft. \nSince Chris and Keasha launched Team Draft at their wedding in November of 2011\, Team Draft has been on a mission to tackle cancer. “Our hope is not only to positively impact research funding\, but to improve the quality of life for those affected by lung cancer\,” says Draft. “We aren’t fighting against lung cancer\, we’re fighting for people. That’s why we are leading this national campaign to change the face of lung cancer.”\nThe Facts About Lung Cancer \nFor decades\, the facts regarding lung cancer have been sobering: \n•Anyone can get lung cancer.\n•Over 60% of lung cancers are diagnosed in people who never smoked or in former smokers.1\n•Lung cancer surpassed breast cancer as the #1 cancer killer for women in 1987.2\n•Lung cancer kills more people than any other cancer3\, and takes more lives than breast\, cervical\,\nand prostate cancers . . . combined.4\n•The five year survival rate for lung cancer is just 17%—a rate that has changed very little since the 1970’s.5 \nBut now there is HOPE! The use of state-of-the-art lung cancer screening techniques is reducing mortality rates by 20% in some patient groups while cutting-edge team-based\, multidisciplinary treatment procedures are improving the quality of life for lung cancer patients across the country. And thanks to advances in molecular tumor mutation testing\, researchers and treating physicians are developing effective personal lung cancer treatments designed to extent and\, ultimately\, save lives.7 The key to making even greater strides is funding\, but funding for lung cancer research is impacted by the “smoker’s disease” stigma.8 That’s why Team Draft is campaigning to change the face of lung cancer. Donate Now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer! \n1 Brigham and Women’s Hospital\, Women’s Health Policy & Advocacy Program\, Out of the Shadows: Women and Lung Cancer (2010)\, at 4.\n2 American Cancer Society\, Cancer Facts & Figures 2011\, at 15. 3 Id. 4 Out of the Shadows\, at 4. 5 Cancer Facts & Figures\, at 16; Out of the Shadows\, at 9; American Cancer Society\, Cancer Statistics 2009: A\nPresentation From the American Cancer Society\, at 22. 6 Cancer Facts & Figures\, at 15.

SUMMARY:Team Draft Tackles Lung Cancer at the Georgia Dome; Debuts New Public Awareness Video
DESCRIPTION:(Atlanta\, GA) – November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month\, and Team Draft is honoring the occasion with a new public awareness video. On Thursday\, Team Draft co-founder and former Atlanta Falcons linebacker\, Chris Draft\, who lost his wife\, Keasha\, to lung cancer in December 2011\, will announce the debut of the video\, which is designed to dispel some of the myths and misconceptions about this misunderstood disease. After the announcement\, Team Draft will head to the Georgia Dome where lung cancer survivors Samantha Mixon and Kristen Carlton will join us on the field before the game. \nTeam Draft’s new video highlights the lack of awareness about lung cancer. It features Draft asking people on the street which cancer is the biggest killer of women\, men and overall. While most people said that breast cancer kills more women\, that prostate cancer kills more men\, and that skin cancer kills more people overall than any other cancers\, the fact is lung cancer takes more lives than breast\, cervical and prostate cancer combined and kills more people than any other cancer. The video is designed to raise public awareness by shining a light on the true facts about this deadly disease and inviting people to share those facts. To see the video\, share the facts\, and donate to support the National Campaign visit www.teamdraft.org. \nThursday night’s games is just the latest in Team Draft’s Survivor Series. Working with teams throughout the NFL\, NBA\, NHL\, and NCAA\, Team Draft is leading this national effort to have lung cancer survivors\, researchers and doctors attend games across the country. As part of Team Draft’s National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer\, the Survivor Series is designed not only to create a unique experience for participating survivors\, but perhaps more importantly\, to raise awareness on a local and national level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of lung cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. SUMMARY:NMCP Kicks off Lung Cancer Screening Program During Lung Cancer Awareness Month
DESCRIPTION:Naval Medical Center Portsmouth\, Va. – Join us Friday\, Nov. 22\, at noon as Naval Medical Center Portsmouth kicks off its Lung Cancer Screening Program in conjunction with Lung Cancer Awareness Month. \nGuests include former NFL linebacker Chris Draft and U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott\, D-Va. \nDraft has a personal connection to lung cancer. He lost his wife\, Keasha\, to lung cancer in 2011. “Team Draft” raises money for lung cancer research\, raises awareness about lung cancer\, and provides inspiration to lung cancer patients and caregivers. Keasha had never smoked\, and by challenging the perception that lung cancer patients contributed to their own illness by smoking\, Team Draft hopes to reverse a stigma that negatively impacts lung cancer research funding. \nNMCP’s new Lung Cancer Screening Program incorporates a low-dose CT chest scan into the annual screening for patients age 55 and older who smoke 30 packs a year\, and patients age 50 and older who smoke 20 packs a year and who’ve also had a family member with lung cancer. This new annual screening is expected to decrease lung cancer deaths by 20 percent through early detection. It’s expected that other diseases will also be detected early\, so treatment can begin before disease advances. \nThe scan uses no needles\, no CT contrast dye\, and is painless. Patients can walk in for the scan\, which takes less than five minutes. \nDonate Now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:Two Commitments!
DESCRIPTION:Two years ago\, Chris and Keasha were married\, and like most couples on their wedding day\, they made a commitment to each other–a commitment to that each would love\, honor and cherish the other. But they also made a broader commitment to all those who\, like Keasha\, were battling lung cancer–a commitment to tackle the disease. You see\, it was on that day\, standing side-by-side\, that Chris and Keasha launched Team Draft. And while Keasha may no longer be physically with us\, her fight and her spirit live on through our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nThanks to the generous support and donations of people like you\, we have been able to accomplish a lot in the last couple of years. In the last month alone\, for example\, we led a national initiative to offer potentially life-saving lung cancer screenings to veterans across the country in honor of Veterans Day\, we have continued to feature stories of survivors and doctors we have met along the campaign trail\, and we worked with teams across the NFL\, NHL\, NBA\, MLS\, and MLB to arrange to have a lung cancer survivors at home games throughout the year in honor of Lung Cancer Awareness. Over the last couple years\, our National Campaign has also taken us to more than 90 of the top cancer treatment and research facilities in North America. But there is a lot more to be done\, and we need your help. \nKeasha knew that it takes a team to tackle cancer. She also understood the dedication and commitment it would take to change the face of lung cancer. So\, on her wedding day\, she told her guests that she didn’t want presents. Instead\, she asked them to make a donation to Team Draft to support the commitment she and Chris made that day to all of those fighting the disease. Please help us celebrate Team Draft’s two year anniversary by making a donation today. Your donation will ensure that we can continue to honor Keasha’s commitment by raising lung cancer awareness\, increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a smokers disease and celebrating all those survivors who are living longer and living stronger every day. \nPlease share our story and the video of Chris and Keasha’s wedding with your friends and family\, but please share the commitment to tackle lung cancer with them as well.

SUMMARY:University of Arizona Cancer Center
DESCRIPTION:Tucson\, AZ. Team Draft will visit the University of Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson\, Arizona.\nFounded in 1976 as a Division of The University of Arizona’s College of Medicine\, the University of Arizona Cancer Center is a Center of Excellence in the Arizona Health Sciences Center. In 1990\, The University of Arizona Cancer Center was designated as one of the first comprehensive cancer centers by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The University of Arizona Cancer Center is the only comprehensive cancer center headquartered in Arizona. \nAcademic/Research Programs\nThe primary responsibility of an NCI comprehensive cancer center is to conduct research that will lead to the reduction of cancer morbidity and mortality. A framework for this research consists of focusing upon the molecular and cellular mechanisms of oncogenesis. Molecular mechanisms emphasize genetic\, epigenetic\, and signaling mechanisms\, while cellular mechanisms emphasize the biology of invasion and metastasis\, as well as stromal-cellular interactions. With the primacy of this research mission in mind\, the research programs and core services constitute a bedrock of The University of Arizona Cancer Center. Overall\, The University of Arizona Cancer Center has four scientific research programs that work together to accomplish the Center’s mission to prevent and cure cancer: \nCancer Biology; \nCancer Imaging; \nCancer Prevention and Control; \nTherapeutic Development; \nThese research programs collaborate concerning a breadth of issues from benchtop to bedside involving transnational and clinical research with a major emphasis on discovery. Furthermore\, the programs also focus on the development and delivery of novel treatments to reduce the morbidity and mortality of cancer in the Southwest and across the nation. \nThe University of Arizona Cancer Center provides an essential forum to foster outstanding basic and clinical transnational research\, interdisciplinary collaboration\, education\, training and internal and external peer review. The infrastructure of the research program support is established by 13 shared services to support our research\, education and training mission: Analytical Core; Behavioral Measurements; Informatics/Bioinformatics; Biometry; Imaging Core; Clinical Research; Experimental Mouse; Experimental Radiation; Flow Cytometry; Genomics; Proteomics; Synthetic Chemistry & Molecular Modeling; and Tissue Acquisition\, Cell and Molecular Analysis. \nThe extensive research portfolio of The University of Arizona Cancer Center includes more than $50 million in annual research funding\, including three large NCI interdisciplinary programs and collaborative research grants\, and two Special Programs of Research Excellence\, one in gastrointestinal cancers and one in lymphoma. \nDonate Now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked—including Keasha Rutledge Draft—are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. Team Draft is out to change all that. “If we can take away the stigma that says you have to be a smoker to get lung cancer\, we have a real chance to educate people about the true nature of the disease\,” explains Draft.
