SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Stadium: Denver Broncos
DESCRIPTION:Denver\, CO. CU Cancer Center lung cancer survivor-advocates Jonathan Wilmot and Hazel Henz represented Team Draft at Sports Authority Field on Sunday. The survivors watched Peyton Manning’s Denver Broncos take on the Kansas City Chiefs. #Tacklinglungcancer #NFL #LCAM15\n\n\nHazel Senz \n\nI am a 55 year old mother of two beautiful girls and wife to the love of my life. On March 5\, 2014\, my life changed forever when I was diagnosed with stage IV non- small cell lung cancer. I didn’t have any symptoms and my diagnosis was an incidental finding from another routine test. It (my diagnosis) came as quite a shock because I was a healthy\, active person who enjoyed running\, skiing and hiking\, and never smoked.\n\nMy tumor was tested and it came back positive for a mutation. This is when mutations are good. In fact\, when one of my doctors found out about my mutation\, she came into my office with the results in her hand\, jumping up and down\, almost in tears\, saying “This changes everything!!” And she was right. My tumor came back ALK positive meaning I could benefit from targeted therapy. The targeted therapy was an ALK inhibitor called Crizotinib. I have been on Crizotinib since April 2014. The drug has allowed me to live a relatively normal life. I experience some side effects\, but nothing that isn’t manageable. Because of the continued research and development in lung cancer\, I am confident that one day lung cancer will become more like a chronic disease rather than the death sentence it was once perceived to be. This cannot happen unless lung cancer gets the global support and funding needed to continue the research necessary to find a cure.\n\nI feel honored to represent Team Draft’s initiative\, A Survivor at Every Stadium\, to show the public that I am the face of stage IV lung cancer. I want to eliminate the stigma of lung cancer and to educate the public that anyone can get lung cancer; even folks like me who never smoked. If you have lungs\, you can get lung cancer. Please support Team Draft as it tries to raise awareness and change the face of lung cancer.\n \nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer.\n\nLeveraging our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country.\n\nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Denver Broncos\, CU Cancer Center\, Dr. Ross Camidge and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible.\n\nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Rink: Nashville Predators
DESCRIPTION:Nashville\, TN. Lung cancer survivor-advocate Jenny White led a group of lung cancer survivor-advocates to the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville\, TN on Tuesday night. The survivors watched the Nashville Predators defeat the visiting Anaheim Ducks. #PredsvsDucks #HockeyFightsCancer #LCAM15 \n\nNothing Shall Be Impossible \n\nJenny White came through her experience with cancer a changed woman.\n\n“I now realize I am going to die someday. I started asking myself ‘what am I doing with my life?’ I think differently now. I always thought I had all the time in the world. Now\, I know I’d better get moving.”\n\nSince that time\, Jenny has gone to school on women and lung cancer. What she has learned has been shocking: More women will die of lung cancer than breast\, cervical and ovarian cancers combined. More non-smokers will die of lung cancer than those with melanoma\, brain and thyroid cancers combined. Most of those are women. A woman’s five-year survival rate for lung cancer is 18% versus breast cancer at 89%.\n\nSo Jenny got involved. She founded the Tennessee chapter of the Lung Cancer Alliance\, a Washington\, D.C.-based nonprofit working for more federally funded lung cancer research and dedicated solely to patient support and advocacy for people living with lung cancer or those at risk for the disease.\n\n“There’s no pink army for lung cancer like there is for breast cancer\,” she said. “So\, I’m creating our own army.”\n\n“People assume if you have a lung cancer diagnosis that you smoke\,” she said\, “and they stop listening. Lung cancer research is minimal and grossly underfunded. An overwhelming percentage of the time\, people diagnosed with this disease either never smoked or they quit between 15 and 30 years ago.”\n\nRead the full story\n\nMartha Lesnick\n\nI’m a songwriter\, and a two time lung cancer survivor….\n\nPlease find a video link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Keurd2TMcNc) of a song I wrote (“Breathe Hope”) several years ago for a LUNGevity-sponsored event. It’s an honor for me to make this contribution to our cause.\n\n“I am grateful to Team Draft and the Preds for making tonight possible. We have a close-knit\, enthusiastic group of survivors here in Nashville who are involved with different organizations and who are very supportive of each other.”\n\n\nPatty Fought\n\n“Thank-you so very much for a great evening of hockey fun! I appreciate what Team Draft is doing to put a face on lung cancer. Sometimes I feel like I don’t belong in the groups because I didn’t need chemo or radiation\, but I remind myself that what I had was cancer and that I still have a couple of nodes that require chest CTs every 6 months and blood tests every 3 months. Next month I have a full body scan scheduled\, also. So thank-you! We are BIG hockey fans and thoroughly enjoyed the game!”\n\nGiven the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, in 2012\, we expanded it beyond the gridiron to the ice through our Survivor at Every Rink initiative. As part of Team Draft’s National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer\, this celebration of survivorship raises awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers across North America.\n\nThrough our Survivor at Every Rink initiative\, we are working with all NHL teams to have a lung cancer survivor attend one of the team’s home games as a part of their national initiative\, Hockey Fights Cancer!\n\nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Nashville Predators\, the NHL\, St. Thomas Health\, Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center\, Tennessee Oncology\, Gilda’s Club Nashville\, lung cancer survivor-advocate Jenny White and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible.\n\nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL - A Survivor at Every Stadium: Jacksonville Jags
DESCRIPTION:Jacksonville\, FL. Lung cancer survivor-advocate Samantha Mixon\, and her family\, represented Team Draft at Everbank Stadium on Thursday night. They watched the Jacksonville Jaguars defeat Marcus Mariota’s Tennessee Titans. #Tacklinglungcancer #NFL #ThursdayNightFootball #LCAM15\n\nKeeping My Faith – Living with Stage IV Lung Cancer ~ Samantha Mixon\n\nToday I went to see a counselor at our church. I absolutely love St. Simons Community Church and the family of people we’ve grown with there. I reached out because Karley recently told me that she felt like she needed more faith\, it wasn’t strong enough.\n\nI totally understood. How could it be strong enough to understand your mom has stage 4 lung cancer when you’re only 10? Why would God do this to us?\n\nWell\, I want everyone\, including Karley\, to understand. All of our days are numbered. We are all going to die one day\, some sooner than others. What is important is that we live the way He would want us to live. There is a purpose for all of us. Mine may be this blog\, reaching out and helping people\, raising my girl\, I don’t know. And I won’t know until I’m at those pearly gates. Neither will any of you. So\, I do have complete faith in my healing. But\, where that healing takes place\, that is up to God. That is something we do not have control over\, so what is the sense in worrying?\n\nThat’s what I want Karley to know. I will be fine. Whether it be here or in heaven. She doesn’t have to worry about me. Yes\, I get sad because I worry about her\, but I can’t control what happens. I only pray that she is fine without me one day. She’s a strong girl and I pray she will continue to have the love and support she needs to deal with the big things that come her way. She’s been through so much.\n\nWe are going back to that counselor 12/1 to both talk to her. She was so helpful. We are also going to the Jacksonville Jaguars game with Team Draft Thursday so I’ll update Friday. And my 3 year cancerversary is coming up 11/27!\n\nRead the full blog\n\nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer.\n\nLeveraging our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country.\n\nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Jacksonville Jaguars\, Piedmont Health Cancer Center\, and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible.\n\nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every College Stadium: Alabama Crimson Tide
DESCRIPTION:Tuscaloosa\, AL. UAB lung cancer survivors Ronnie Miller and Stan Graves represented Team Draft at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday. The survivors watched University of Alabama Crimson Tide dominate the visiting Charleston Southern Buccaneers. #Tacklinglungcancer #RollTide #LCAM15 \nStan Graves \n“I appreciate being asked by the Chris Draft Family Foundation to participate for Team Draft and attend the Alabama game as a survivor of lung cancer\, and giving the chance to help to promote the education of lung cancer that can help those that have lung cancer continue to live a good and prosperous life with the support of friends\, family\, prayer and a positive attitude. If I can play a role in helping\, then I am pleased to do so.” \nI was diagnosed with Anaplastic Large Cell Kinase (ALK) in June 2014. In May of 2014\, I had a cough that got progressively worse. My ENT had me get with my primary care doctor to have an X-ray. The X-ray showed that I had a 2 1/3’ mass on my upper left lobe. I had surgery to remove the upper left lobe and three lymph nodes August 1\, 2014 by Dr. Robert Cerfolio. My Oncologist is Dr. Francisco Robert Vizcarrando. I had four chemotherapy sessions starting in September 2014 and ended in November 2014. After the surgery\, a blood clot was discovered in my pulmonary vein and I was on a blood thinner (Enoxaparin) until February/March 2015. I started Xalkori in February 2015. \nRonnie Miller \nThanks for this opportunity to attend the game at the University of Alabama. With… the help of The Chrisd Draft Family Foundation people like myself can help get the word out that yes we can live with Lung Cancer. \nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nLeveraging our connections with the NFL and the NCAA\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nSpecial thanks to the University of Alabama\, University of Alabama WR coach Keary Colbert\, UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Rink: Ottawa Senators
DESCRIPTION:Ottawa\, Ontario\, Canada. Lung cancer survivor-advocate Elizabeth Dessureault\, and her husband\, represented Team Draft at the Canadian Tire Centre on Saturday night. They watched the Ottawa Senators take on the Philadelphia Flyers. #HockeyFightsCancer #LungCancerCanada #LCAM15\n\n\nWe had a fantastic time and want to thank Team Draft so mcuh for making it happen!! Your “survivor at every rink” is doing amazing things and we truly appreciate it!! The video post has over 1000 likes and has surely helped to change the face of lung cancer!\n\nWatch the video of Elizabeth at the Ottawa Senators game\n\nElizabeth Dessureault\n\nWhen she was told she had lung cancer\, Elizabeth Dessureault says\, she was unable to process what she was hearing. “It didn’t make sense to me that a 26-year-old\, healthy\, non-smoker could get lung cancer.”\n\nHers is not the face usually associated with the disease. But\, as smoking rates decline\, people like Dessureault — young\, non-smokers\, often female — are increasingly being diagnosed with the cancer that is the deadliest and receives less research funding than other major cancers.\n\nWhile smoking is still the leading cause of lung cancer\, the majority of new patients are people who never smoked or no longer smoke\, according to a new report from Lung Cancer Canada\, which paints a picture of uneven treatment across the country\, poor early diagnosis and low research investment.\n\nDessureault’s case is typical of these new faces in some ways — by the time she was diagnosed\, her non-small-cell lung cancer was already well advanced. The first surgeon she saw told Dessureault there was nothing he could do and gave her a year to live. “It was very traumatizing.”\n\nWhat is far from typical is the fact that Dessureault was pregnant when she received the devastating diagnosis. Her son Jack — born two months early so that his mother could receive more aggressive treatment — is now a thriving four months old. But Dessureault’s experiences have inspired to her raise awareness about the new realities of lung cancer and the need for support.\n\n“I want to help change the face of lung cancer\,” she said.\n\n\nRead the full article\n\nGiven the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, in 2012\, we expanded it beyond the gridiron to the ice through our Survivor at Every Rink initiative. SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Stadium: Carolina Panthers
DESCRIPTION:Charlotte\, NC. Lung cancer survivor-advocates Edwina and Tomma represented Team Draft at Bank of America Stadium on Sunday. The survivors watched the undefeated Carolina Panthers improve their record to 10-0 by defeating the Washington Redskins. #Tacklinglungcancer #Levine #UNC #LCAM15 \nEdwina \nEdwina hadn’t smoked a day in her life\, yet she was faced with the reality of having a stage of lung cancer where 50% of patients don’t make it past a year. Lung cancer often goes undiagnosed in its early stages and Edwina experienced no warning signs that it had spread to other areas of her body… \nBecause of Levine Cancer Institute’s integrated approach to cancer care delivery\, Edwina was able to receive all her care without leaving the Charlotte/Monroe area. It also kept her close to another integrated system – a circle of family members who all live along the same stretch of road in rural Monroe. \n“I’m the youngest of 11 children\,” said Edwina. “My family treated me the way I was acting – like everything was going to be all right. They kept encouraging me as if I wasn’t handed a bunch of bad news. Looking back on it\, I wonder\, ‘How did I do that? How did I make it through? It was God’s grace and mercy and the prayers of my loved ones that brought me through this. I could have never made it without God\, and the support of the Levine Cancer Institute Team.” \nRead the full story \nTomma \nEight years after her diagnosis\, lung cancer survivor Tomma Hargraves is training to become a lay navigator with UNC Lineberger\, giving back to the hospital that she credits with saving her life. \nIn October of 2006\, Tomma Hargraves found a small lump in her neck. Although she felt very healthy\, she went to her doctor to have the lump checked out. A few days later\, she received a diagnosis that shocked her: Stage 3B non-small cell lung cancer. The tumor was in the right lobe of her lungs\, and the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes on the left side of her neck. \n“I wish I had known that non-smokers and people who had quit long ago could get lung cancer\,” says Hargraves. I thought I had done everything right\, and I still got lung cancer.” \nAfter seeking several opinions and researching her treatment options\, Hargraves decided on UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Two things set UNC Lineberger apart for her. “I was offered an aggressive clinical trial that included chemo\, radiation and a targeted oral medication\,” she says. “But what I really loved about UNC was the team approach. I didn’t have to go from doctor to doctor. They all came to me in my room and talked to me about their roles: the radiation oncologist; the thoracic oncologist; the nurse navigator. The N.C. Cancer Hospital has such a warm atmosphere\, and I feel like the people really care about me.” \nRead the full story \nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nLeveraging our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nSpecial thanks to the Carolina Panthers\, Levine Cancer Institute\, UNC Lineberger Cancer Center and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:Two Commitments! To Each Other and Team Draft!
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta\, GA. Four years ago today\, Chris and Keasha were married\, and like most couples on their wedding day\, they made a commitment to each other–a commitment to that each would love\, honor and cherish the other. But they also made a broader commitment to all those who\, like Keasha\, were battling lung cancer–a commitment to tackle the disease. You see\, it was on that day\, standing side-by-side\, that Chris and Keasha launched Team Draft. And while Keasha may no longer be physically with us\, her fight and her spirit live on through our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer.\n\n\nKeasha knew that it takes a team to tackle cancer. She also understood the dedication and commitment it would take to change the face of lung cancer. So\, on her wedding day\, she told her guests that she didn’t want presents. Instead\, she asked them to make a donation to Team Draft to support the commitment she and Chris made that day to all of those fighting the disease. Please help us celebrate Team Draft’s four year anniversary by making a donation today. Your donation will ensure that we can continue to honor Keasha’s commitment by raising lung cancer awareness\, increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a smokers disease and celebrating all those survivors who are living longer and living stronger every day.\n\nPlease share our story and the video of Chris and Keasha’s wedding with your friends and family\, but please share the commitment to tackle lung cancer with them as well.\n\nDONATE NOW to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Arena: Charlotte Hornets
DESCRIPTION:Charlotte\, NC. Levine Cancer Institute lung cancer survivor Edwina represented Team Draft\, with Keasha Draft’s parents\, at the Time Warner Cable Arena on Monday night. She watched the Charlotte Hornets defeat the Detroit Pistons. #HoneyBees #Keasha #ASurvivoratEveryArena #BuzzCity\n\n\nAfter graduation\, Team Draft co-founder Keasha Rutledge Draft worked as an engineer while dancing for the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets before working in the pharmaceutical industry. She was an energetic\, vibrant young woman who had never smoked when she was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer in December 2010. At the time\, her only “symptom” was a slight shortness of breath a few days earlier. Despite the diagnosis and knowing the long odds they faced\, Keasha and Chris decided to fight back. On November 27\, 2011\, standing side-by-side\, they launched Team Draft at their wedding. One month later\, Keasha lost her courageous fight and died at the age of 38.\n\n\nEdwina\n\nEdwina hadn’t smoked a day in her life\, yet she was faced with the reality of having a stage of lung cancer where 50% of patients don’t make it past a year. Lung cancer often goes undiagnosed in its early stages and Edwina experienced no warning signs that it had spread to other areas of her body…\n\nBecause of Levine Cancer Institute’s integrated approach to cancer care delivery\, Edwina was able to receive all her care without leaving the Charlotte/Monroe area. It also kept her close to another integrated system – a circle of family members who all live along the same stretch of road in rural Monroe.\n\n“I’m the youngest of 11 children\,” said Edwina. I could have never made it without God\, and the support of the Levine Cancer Institute Team.”\n\nRead the full story\n\nTeam Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The fact is anybody can get lung cancer. SUMMARY:THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL - A Survivor at Every Stadium: Oakland Raiders
DESCRIPTION:Oakland\, CA. Kaiser Health lung cancer survivor-advocate Don Stranathan represented Team Draft at the O.co Coliseum on Thursday night. Don watched the Silver and Black defeat the San Diego Chargers in overtime. #RaiderNation #Tacklinglungcancer #ThursdayNightFootball #Raiderettes\n\n\nDon Stranathan\n\nMy last promises to her: Advocate for lung cancer awareness and live life to the fullest\n\nThe bad news is that I have cancer. The good news is that cancer has taught me to live life to the fullest. I never allow cancer to define me. I rarely miss an opportunity to hike\, bike\, or do anything that strengthens my immune system and keeps me out in nature.\n\nIn October 2011 I met Penny Blume\, the love of my life\, on a lung cancer support community on Inspire. Penny left this earth on Jan. 21\, 2014 after battling small cell lung cancer for 32 months. Penny and I spent our time together traveling back and forth from New York to California. She passed at my home in Santa Rosa\, Calif.\, after trying one last clinical trial at Stanford Cancer Center.\n\nPenny and I turned to each other for emotional support to battle our cancers and fell in love. It was after a couple of months of texting and chatting on social media that we decided to meet. Penny flew to California for her first visit in January 2012\, and the rest is history.\n\nMy relationship with Penny also marked the beginning of my advocacy work for lung cancer. It started when a friend of ours asked us to post our story on a lung cancer survivors group on Facebook. I posted something\, and then Penny and I decided to repost it on Inspire\, since it was the site that brought us together. In September 2012 our story was shared by ABC News and Good Morning America. In the following weeks\, it was shared and tweeted all over the world…\n\nMy last promises to Penny were that I would continue to live life to the fullest and advocate for lung cancer research and awareness. One day at a time I try to keep those promises to her.\n\n– See more at: http://scopeblog.stanford.edu/2014/11/18/my-last-promises-to-her-advocate-for-lung-cancer-awareness-and-live-life-to-the-fullest/#sthash.nz4BlwDO.dpuf\n\nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer.\n\nOur Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, leverages our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country. The public needs to learn that anyone with lungs can get lung cancer.\n\nIn the time she have left\, she is using her skills to help others who have LC\, and increase the awareness of LC among everyone else. In her previous career in aerospace systems engineering\, she was a “technical translator” of sorts: She researched science and technology developments and helped others understand how these developments could benefit them. Now she does the same for the experience and science of lung cancer. Her days are spent tracking developments in LC research and treatments\, supporting and informing LC ePatients and caregivers online and in person\, and raising awareness through writing\, blogging and public speaking. She attends and reports on medical meetings as a Patient Advocate\, and is one of the founders and moderators of the Lung Cancer Social Media (#LCSM) community. SUMMARY:Kathy Weber is Heading to the NFL Pro Bowl
DESCRIPTION:Denver\, CO. Lung cancer survivor Kathy Weber was the first runner-up in Team Draft’s Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge. Kathy and her family will spend a few days in Hawaii and watch the NFL Pro Bowl at Aloha Stadium on January 31\, 2016.\n\n\n“I am humbled and grateful to the IASLC\, the Team Draft 2016 Super Bowl Challenge\, and all those who sponsored me with donations. As the second place fundraiser\, my family and I have won a trip to the Pro Bowl in Hawaii! Amazing!”\n\nThe Super Bowl Challenge participants were part of a friendly competition\, with the top fundraisers awarded trips to Super Bowl 50\, the NFL Pro-Bowl and the Taste of the NFL. Kathy and the other winners\, announced on January 4\, 2016\, will have an opportunity to share their powerful stories with key individuals with influence from across the country.\n\n“I joined the IASLC and Team Draft Foundation to increase awareness and research funding for lung cancer patients like me\, young and non-smokers\, not to win a prize. After attending the IASLC World Conference on Lung Cancer in Denver\, I was shocked to learn the overall survival rate for lung cancer has been stagnant for almost 50 years and the 5 year survival rate is 19%. While most lung cancers are diagnosed in advanced stages\, my cancer was caught early. After a right upper lobectomy\, I am cancer free at my 18 month check-up.”\n\nThe survivors that raised over $1\,000 were able to designate a beneficiary for 50% of their funds raised. Kathy has designated the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer as her beneficiary.\n\n“My goal is to continue my involvement in the IASLC supporting their research commitment and join Team Draft’s quest to ‘change the face of lung cancer’.” Kathy Weber\n\nAll of the participants will be able to continue raising funds until the Super Bowl\, February 7\, 2016.\n\nTeam Draft was founded by NFL veteran Linebacker Chris Draft and his late wife Keasha\, an engineer and Clemson graduate who died of lung cancer at the age of 38.\n\n“Super Bowl and Pro Bowl week are a fitting time to spotlight the crusade to change the face of lung cancer. The level of commitment\, drive and passion required to make it this far parallels the efforts required to get lung cancer research to the next level\,” said Chris Draft who co-founded Team Draft with his late wife Keasha to change the face of lung cancer.\n\nKeasha and Chris Draft had attended the Super Bowl the year of her diagnosis\, fulfilling one of her lifelong dreams. The memory of that Super Bowl trip served as part of the inspiration for The Super Bowl Challenge. “It takes a team to tackle lung cancer\, and the Super Bowl Challenge has expanded this amazing team. Keasha’s legacy of hope lives on through the Super Bowl Challenge team and we are grateful to all who have contributed and continue to contribute to lung cancer awareness\, research\, treatment and patient advocacy efforts\, and “said Draft. “We are excited to have the opportunity to take this year’s Super Bowl Challenge winners and their stories to the Super Bowl\, the Pro-Bowl\, and the Taste of the NFL.”\n\nAbout the NFL Pro Bowl \n\nThe Pro Bowl returns to Hawaii’s Aloha Stadium on January 31\, 2016. It’s Team Rice against Team Irvin squaring off in the game that brings you closer to the players through fun insider access. It will again serve as the signature event to kick off Super Bowl week.\n\nAbout Team Draft\n\nTeam Draft\, an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation\, is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” Despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. Team Draft is committed to educating people about the true nature of lung cancer\, raising funds for research and improving the lives of those affected by lung cancer. “We are excited to have the opportunity to take this year’s Super Bowl Challenge winners and their stories to the Super Bowl\, the Pro-Bowl\, and the Taste of the NFL.”\n\nWhat is the Taste of the NFL? \n\nSince 1992\, the Taste of the NFL (a 501c3 organization) has rallied the country’s top chefs and the NFL’s greatest players to raise money in support of food banks throughout the United States.\n\nThis is done through via three avenues:\n\n • on-line donations during the KICK HUNGER CHALLENGE® (September – January)\n\n • locally hosted Taste Of The NFL events by an NFL team and their food bank featuring their players and local chefs\n\n • The Super Bowl Taste Of The NFL – The Party with a Purpose®. Held on the eve of Super Bowl in the host city. This event is a unique way to experience exceptional cuisine\, meet NFL players and coaches\, and support our fight against hunger.\n\nThrough the efforts of hundreds of volunteers who help make “Taste of the NFL – Party With A Purpose” the single most successful charitable event at the Super Bowl\, the Taste of the NFL organization continues to help feed the 37 million Americans who have turned to their local food banks for assistance. Millions of needs\, thousands of families and dozens of new hunger projects have been affected by this major volunteer effort. Our goal: end hunger.\n\nAbout Team Draft\n\nTeam Draft\, an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation\, is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” Despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. Team Draft is committed to educating people about the true nature of lung cancer\, raising funds for research and improving the lives of those affected by lung cancer. SUMMARY:KImberly Ringen is Heading to Super Bowl 50
DESCRIPTION:Denver\, CO. Lung cancer survivor-advocate Kim Ringen was the top fundraiser in Team Draft’s Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge. Kim and her husband\, Davin\, will represent Team Draft at Super Bowl 50 and the 25th annual Taste of the NFL the first weekend in February.\n\n\n“Having the opportunity to be apart of the Lung Cancer Super Bowl challenge has been a fun and exciting experience. It is about spreading awareness about this beast of a disease…and the cherry on top is to be in the stands of the biggest football game of the year!!”\n\nThe Super Bowl Challenge participants were part of a friendly competition\, with the top fundraisers awarded trips to Super Bowl 50\, the NFL Pro-Bowl and the Taste of the NFL. Kim and the other winners\, announced on January 4\, 2016\, will have an opportunity to share their powerful stories with key individuals with influence from across the country.\n\n“Opening day of the (LCSC) challenge my health declined and I was hospitalized…some would say that the timing was less than ideal – I say the timing was perfect!!! Rather than laying in the hospital bed constantly wondering if I was going to make it through… We were on our phones launching our campaign via social media spreading the word about the importance of research funding.”\n\n“The LCSC gave me a gift…as I was wheeled in and out of different diagnostic and surgical procedures we would get updates on our phones that yet another donation and encouraging comment had came through…This was such an uplifting experience in a time that would have been considered very mentally draining. After having a large wedge of my lung surgically removed I felt my inner fight grow stronger. I have considered myself a fighter throughout these last 2.5 years – but honestly just before the (LCSC) challenge began I felt a drain in my mental stamina…I fully believe the LCSC and the generous loving support from my friends and family ignited my spark..my fight!!! And that is what is keeping me alive!!!”\n\nI choose Life!!!!!\n\nThank you Chris Draft Family Foundation! ~ KImberly Ringen\n\nThe survivors that raise over $1\,000 can designate a beneficiary for 50% of their funds raised. Kim has designated the Lung Cancer Colorado Fund at UC Health as her beneficiary.\n\nAll of the participants will be able to continue raising funds until the Super Bowl\, February 7\, 2016.\n\nTeam Draft was founded by NFL veteran Linebacker Chris Draft and his late wife Keasha\, an engineer and Clemson graduate who died of lung cancer at the age of 38.\n\n“Super Bowl and Pro Bowl week are a fitting time to spotlight the crusade to change the face of lung cancer. It is the second-largest day for U.S. food consumption\, after Thanksgiving Day.[3] In addition\, the Super Bowl has frequently been the most-watched American television broadcast of the year; the four most-watched broadcasts in U.S. television history are Super Bowls.[4] In 2015\, Super Bowl XLIX became the most-watched American television program in history with an average audience of 114.4 million viewers\, the fifth time in six years the game had set a record\, starting with the 2010 Super Bowl\, which itself had taken over the number-one spot held for 27 years by the final episode of M*A*S*H.[5][6][7] The Super Bowl is also among the most-watched sporting events in the world\, almost all audiences being North American\, and is second to soccer’s UEFA Champions League final as the most watched annual sporting event worldwide\n\nAbout Team Draft\n\nTeam Draft\, an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation\, is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” Despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every College Arena: University of Arizona
DESCRIPTION:Tucson\, AZ. University of Arizona lung cancer survivor-advocate Ron Crescenzo represented Team Draft at the University of Arizona Men’s Basketball game against the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday\, March 5th. Ron was hosted at the game by\, former NFL player and Chris Draft Family Foundation Board member\, Kadar Hamilton. \nDiagnosed with stage IV lung cancer\, December 4\, 2008\, Ron vowed to not give up\, and to keep moving forward. Ron’s vow was not easy. His initial symptoms were fatigue and lower back pain\, but like most men\, Ron assumed it was just a work related injury/ailment\, and pushed through it. After consulting with a chiropractor\, physical therapist and some other medical professionals\, Ron was ordered to take an MRI. \n“At that point\, it was clear as day\, I had cancer and it had spread to my spine (lumbar 3 vertebrae) where there was a massive tumor causing a fracture”. \nHe immediately had an emergency reconstructive surgery to prevent paralysis. After a number of screws\, rods and a medical device called a cage\, Ron was told by his TMC doctor\, he had between 2 months and\, at best and with chemotherapy\, 6 months to live given his recent diagnosis of stage IV lung cancer. \n“It seemed they had already pronounced me dead and treated me add if i were a smoker\, which i was not.” \nUnwilling to accept this death sentence\, Ron sought out a second opinion at UMC where he met Dr. Laura Garland who said with chemo therapy\, he could have 3-4 years of quality life. \nAfter 85 rounds of chemo\, today marks 7 years 3 months since he was diagnosed. \nRon will turn 60 on May 15\, 2016. Born in upstate New York\, Ron attended Lakeland high school were he played baseball and football where he learned discipline\, courage\, perseverance\, and teamwork. These character traits stuck with Ron throughout his life and continue to govern how he continues to live his life. \nRon has always been a fighter\, having lost his mother to breast cancer in 1973. Shortly thereafter\, he moved to Tucson AZ in 1974 with his father to be closer family. Ron is a father to two\, and grandfather to a beautiful 2 year old girl. \nBefore his diagnosis\, Ron was a real estate investor and also worked as a contacted engine technician. One of his career goals wad to become a full time government employee for the U.S. Border Patrol as an engine technician. He had set a goal in 2003\, mapped a plan and then executed upon that plan. In 2008\, the fruits of his labors had finally paid off. He attained his goal! However\, shortly after\, the lower back issues became more difficult to bear\, leading to the diagnosis. \nFor the last 4 years\, Ron has attended a support group through the University of Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson AZ http://uacc.arizona.edu \nThis group is comprised of about 20 camber patients\, 4 of which are diagnosed with lung cancer. Ron acts as an inspiration to others having more than doubled his estimated life expectancy post diagnosis. Ron’s story\, his victory over cancer was not a fairy tale\, he dealt with depression\, self doubt\, and even tested his faith. However\, being a fighter all his life\, he had an epiphany and said\, “I don’t know how to give up\, I’m going to fight this beast and I’m going to win!” He started with walking portions of a local route called Tumamouth Trail. Progressively\, he increased his distance until he was able to walk the entire uphill trail in a single workout. Queue the Rocky theme! \n“All joking aside\, as i trudged up the Tumamouth trail\, i felt like Rocky\, climbing up the steps in Philadelphia. That sense of accomplishment despite all the adversity. Success in the face of certain death. Victory over cancer!” \nTeam Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The fact is anybody can get lung cancer. Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked—including Keasha—are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. Team Draft is out to change all that by using the unique platform available to Chris as a former NFL player and nationally recognized community leader and health advocate to lead a National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer—a campaign that has taken us to more than 100 of the top cancer treatment and research centers in the United States and Canada. \nOur goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local and national level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of lung cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nSpecial thanks to the University of Arizona Cancer Center\, Kadar Hamilton and our Team Draft’s supporters for helping make this experience possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!
