Team Draft will join rival high schools Greenville and JL Mann to celebrate the end of the high schools’ annual Spirit Week competition this Friday\, Sept 13 at Sirrine Stadium. This will be a game to celebrate and honor cancer survivorship. \nDuring halftime\, cancer survivors will be recognized throughout the stadium with balloon luminaries purchased by Spirit Week supporters and the combined grand total of monies raised this week will be revealed. The high schools hope to raise enough money to pay for the 12’ wide x 140’ long “Spirit Bridge” that will be a central feature in the park. \nThis year both J.L. Mann and Greenville High Schools are joining forces to raise funds for one charity – The Cancer Survivors Park\, a project of Patients First. “This park is redefining the meaning of a survivor”\, says Greenville High School Student Body President Charlie Stone. “Cancer is something that affects everyone. When someone is diagnosed with cancer\, everyone around them is diagnosed. A survivor is the person fighting cancer now\, the caregivers\, family and friends of those patients and even those left behind when someone loses the earthly battle with the disease.” J.L. Mann High School Student Body President\, Caroline Grigg\, adds\, “We really wanted to make a large positive impact on the community and we wanted our schools to get involved with something that they could enjoy for years to come and know it would continually touch many lives. Survivors Susan Warmerdam\, treated at Northwestern Comprehensive Cancer Center\, and Susan O’Conell\, treated at Rush University Cancer Center\, will be representing Team Draft at the Chicago Bears vs. Minnesota Vikings Game Sunday afternoon. \nSusan Warmerdam represented Team Draft last year at the Chicago Bears game. She has worked tirelessly as an advocate for lung cancer across the nation. Her story is an inspiration and a true testament to the new developments in research and treatment. Here is her story in her own words: \nAt 47\, the news that I had an inoperable and\, according to the medical community\, incurable cancer was devastating. As soon as my initial shock and depression could be forced aside\, I decide that I would beat this disease. I would be the miracle patient\, and I vowed to do everything within my power to fight for my life. I did extensive research in both western and holistic medicine. I selected an oncologist and began treatment at Northwestern with a daily oral chemo drug. At the same time\, I volunteered to be part of a test group for a new experimental drug. At home\, I purged my life of all carcinogenic chemicals\, unnecessary dyes\, fragrances and additives. I took steps to limit my exposure to unnecessary radiation. I overhauled my diet\, completely eliminating sugar\, meats and dairy\, and moved to a primarily plant-based diet with an occasional fish. My oncologist thought all of these steps\, especially my new diet\, were unnecessary and possibly harmful\, but when I returned for my first follow up CT Scan 6 weeks later\, my tumors had shrunk by 30%–70%. Loehrer Sr.\, MD\, director of the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center. “The advantage of this\, particularly during a time of austerity for research\, is that we can build upon the strengths of the institutions and fortify some of the shortcomings.” \nNewly developed clinical trials will be linked to molecular diagnostics\, enabling researchers to understand what drives the cancers to grow and what might be done to stop them from growing.\nThe consortium will also leverage geographical locations and existing relationships among cancer centers. \n“For research to be truly impactful\, we must work together\,” said Maha Hussain\, MD\, FACP\, associate director of clinical research at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. “The synergy\, the collaboration\, the implementation all are aimed at one ultimate goal – making a real difference for patients.”\nThe consortium is meant to create a unique team-research culture in which senior faculty work with and mentor the research leaders of tomorrow. SUMMARY:Dancing with the Stars
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles\, CA. Kim Norris\, President of the Lung Cancer Foundation of America joined Team Draft to attend a taping of Dancing with the Stars.  Lung Cancer Fighter\, Valerie Harper was dancing her heart out on this season only to exit gracefully stage left last week after being eliminated from the competition.  Dancing with the Stars has been a host of more than one lung cancer fighter.  Last season\, Dancer’s Jonathan Roberts and Anna Trebunskaya performed a tribute dance for fellow dancer and good friend\, Julia Ivleva.  Julia passed away from lung cancer in April of 2012. \nValerie Harper danced beautifully throughout the season. She inspired not only the audience but her partner\, Tristan MacManus as well.  When asked about Valerie\, Tristan replied\, ”I think maybe life’s a little bit better since I met Valerie Harper.”  Fellow contestants mentioned how much she inspired the rest of the dancers on the show.   \nWhen she received the news that she was leaving the show\, according to USA Today\, Harper said\, “It has been absolutely wonderful. Completely unique. Like nothing else in the world that you would ever do. And it was an opportunity for me to carry a message to folks\, not just with cancer\, but with whatever challenge\, like our song tonight – carry on\, carry on.”

SUMMARY:Kyssi (Khyrstin) Andrews…Tailgating for a cure
DESCRIPTION:Houston\, TX. Team Draft helped our littlest fighter\, Kyssi Andrews celebrate her 5th birthday with the Houston Texans. The Texans are no stranger to Lung Cancer. Jonathan Joseph\, Cornerback for the Houston Texans\, as well as his family is waging their own battle against the disease. Joseph’s father is currently battling lung cancer. \n Khyrstin (Kyssi) Andrews is a very cheerful and energetic [5] year old who resides in Houston\, TX and was born on October 14\, 2008. \nKhyrstin had NO prior symptoms or pain. She was going to daycare everyday\, playing with her friends and being a perfectly normal 3 year old little girl (so we thought). On 5/1/2012 she started urinating blood. Her aunt and a very dear family friend rushed her to the emergency room where she was diagnosed with stage 2 phase 3 Wilm’s Tumor (kidney cancer) and then she was transferred immediately to another local hospital via ambulance for further diagnosis and treatment. Kyssi had 2 major surgeries on 5/4/2012. The 1st surgery was performed to remove her right kidney and the cantaloupe sized cancerous tumor and the 2nd surgery was given to place a portal catheter (port) above her heart in order for her to have her chemotherapy treatments\, receive medications\, blood and platelets when/if needed. \nShortly after surgery was performed\, she started a very aggressive/extensive radiation and chemotherapy treatment which consists of 4 different chemo drugs. She has had non-stop chemo treatments weekly since her treatments began in May. The last of her treatments were in November of 2012 and she was considered in remission on November 27\, 2012 (such a GREAT day). \nOn March 1\, 2013\, Kyssi went back to the hospital for what we though would’ve been only her 3 month checkup and scans\, not knowing that we’d return home with our lives and hearts changed yet “AGAIN”. She was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer (in both lungs) and was given less than a 50% chance of survival. That was the “report of the doctors”….we’re waiting on the “report of the Lord”. Every since that day….life has been ever so different for us. She is now on totally different chemotherapy medications that are so much more stronger than before\, and it keeps her a lot more sick. Kyssi has had multiple blood and platelet transfusions\, MORE frequent hospital stays\, constant abdominal pain\, nausea\, vomiting\, loss of appetite\, loss of sleep and also the loss of her hair for the 2nd time due to treatments. The Dallas Stars head into Colorado looking to hand the Avalanche their first loss of the season. Colorado meanwhile heads back home after a successful road trip and they’ll look to deal the Stars their third loss of the season. In 2012\, Team Draft marked the occasion by launching our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nLeveraging our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, we arranged to have lung cancer survivors attend games at NFL stadiums across the country during the last two months of the 2012-2013 season. By the time the initiative concluded at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii\, more than 30 lung cancer survivors representing 30 cancer centers and nearly every NFL team had participated. Given the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, we have expanded it beyond the NFL to the NBA\, the NHL and MLS—and this year\, London\, UK! Murtha Cancer at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC) will partner with the Department of Veterans\, Team Draft\, Lung Cancer Alliance\, and the Vietnam Veterans of America\, in hosting a Lung Cancer Screening Day for all eligible beneficiaries on November 6\, 2013 in the lobby of the America Building at Naval Support Activity Bethesda. \nWRNMMC kicked off the Lung Cancer Screening Initiative in 2012\, which includes an evaluation to determine if a veteran or beneficiary is at risk for lung cancer and for those at high risk\, enrollment into a screening program that will conduct annual low-dose chest CT (computed tomography) scans and smoking cessation. This year the Department of Veteran’s Affairs will announce implementation of the same comprehensive screening program at 8 Veteran’s facilities around the country and the DOD will announce the joining of Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in the screening effort to HONOR our veterans. \nAccording to the Centers for Disease Control\, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women\, with over 150\,000 deaths per year in the U.S. The Veteran’s Affairs has reported smoking is the leading cause of death among military Veteran’s and lung cancer is the leading cancer related death.
