SUMMARY:Creating with Joey
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta\, GA. Creating with Joey was organized by the Lerner Family to honor the life of a young\, healthy\, non-smoker who was suddenly diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of 39 and passed away at the age of 40. \nJoey’s sister once wrote: \nYears ago\, Joey once wrote on his painting\, “Boxers and artists are a lot alike. Artists paint pictures with paint like a boxer throws punches.” Even then\, Joey knew he was a fighter. \nHe was quiet. Some call it shy. We call it extraordinary. A man of few words but with a heart of verses. His silence was filled with pure goodness. And when he spoke\, it was profound. We all listened in our own individual way. A family that heard his courageous fight. Together\, we watched him- hiding his one struggle to prevent our own from overcoming us. We immersed ourselves in his grace\, selflessness\, strength\, and deep love for us. He was relentless. And as he fought\, our already strong family found a new meaning. The definition of family surpassed any human dictionary. We defined life\, love\, and unity through Joey. Without him saying a word\, he taught us how to truly live- how to find strength when you think you have absolutely nothing left\, how to truly be selfless\, how to let petty differences disappear in the midst of what is important\, and how to see someone’s true soul regardless of their physical presence. \nTeam Draft was honored to spend the night helping to celebrate the life and art of Joseph S. Lerner\, III\, affectionately known to all as “Joey”. \nDonate Today to the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer

SUMMARY:UCLA Medical Center
DESCRIPTION:Westwood Los Angeles\, CA. Team Draft will be touring the UCLA Medical Center and talking with the Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Medicine and Director of UCLA Lung Cancer Research Program\, Dr. Steven Dubinett. \nUCLA Medical Center lung cancer researchers are developing a variety of new treatments designed to stimulate a patient’s own immune system to fight the cancer. In one approach\, a specific type of immune stimulating cell\, called a dendritic cell\, is administered to patients as a vaccine. In another approach\, experimental medications are given to patients in a manner that increases the number and function of their own dendritic cells. Alternatively\, a gene therapy vaccine has been developed in which patients are immunized\, like getting a tetanus or flu shot\, so that they develop immunity to their cancer. UCLA is an important basic research center for dendritic cell and gene immunotherapy. In addition\, at any given time several clinical trials are in progress in which patients with lung cancer can participate. \nAs one of the leaders in the medical research community\, UCLA Medical Center is actively involved in several on-going clinical trials specific to Lung Cancer\, designed to evaluate the effectiveness of various diagnostic tools for early lung cancer detection\, including low dose CT scan\, Fluorescence (LIFE) bronchoscopy\, and specialized sputum analysis. Team Draft will be going over the Thoracic Oncology Program as well as the Dendritic Cell Immunotherapy and Gene Immunotherapy for Lung Cancer. To read more about the Lung Cancer program at UCLA Medical Center\, please visit the following link: http://www.lung.med.ucla.edu/research/research4.htm \nDr. Steven M. Dubinett is Chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and Director of the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center (JCCC) Lung Cancer Research Program. He has extensive experience in translational investigation\, academic administration\, mentorship and peer review. He is jointly appointed as Professor in three departments: Medicine\, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine\, and Molecular and Medical Pharmacology. At UCLA since 1988\, he is a member of the Institute of Molecular Medicine\, the Molecular Biology Institute\, and the California NanoSystems Institute. Building on original discoveries relevant to inflammation in the pathogenesis of lung cancer\, he has developed a translational research program which now utilizes these laboratory-based discoveries in the translational research and clinical environment. Dr. Dubinett has received continuous peer-reviewed federal funding for translational lung cancer research for more than 20 years. As a member of NCI.s Translational Research Working Group\, Dr. Dubinett participated in designing pathways to clinical goals: developmental pathways that characterize the transformation of scientific discoveries into new clinical modalities for oncology. Dr. Dubinett serves as the Director for Biomarker Development for the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group and oversees biospecimen utilization in the context of clinical trials. He currently serves as the Chair of the Research Evaluation Panel for biospecimen utilization for the American College of Radiology Imaging Network/National Lung Screening Trial (ACRIN/NLST). He also is a member of the FDA Cellular\, Tissue & Gene Therapies Advisory Committee. \nTeam Draft is excited to learn more about what UCLA is doing to change the state of lung cancer. \nDonate Today to the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer

SUMMARY:Boston University School of Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Boston\, MA. Team Draft will be touring the Boston University School of Medicine and talking with the Director of the Cancer Center\, Dr. Douglas Faller about the research that The Cancer Center is doing. Dr. Faller has a PHD from MIT and a Medical Degree from Harvard. \nThe BU Cancer Center research activities are organized into three Programs: two programs are translationally based (T1 Translational Cancer Research Program and the Hormone-Responsive Cancers Research Program) and one program is population-based (Cancer Prevention and Control in Diverse Populations). Investigators in different research programs collaborate extensively\, allowing greater opportunity for interdisciplinary and translational research. \nThe Cancer Prevention and Control in Diverse Populations Program goals are to improve the scientific bases of cancer control\, especially in understudied populations; study methods of promoting equity of access\, treatment\, and outcomes of health care for people with cancer and people at risk for cancer; and develop and evaluate strategies to reduce disparities in the incidence\, prevalence\, and burden of cancer and related adverse health conditions that exist among specific population groups. \nThe Hormone-Responsive Cancers Research Program focuses on basic and translational research directed toward endocrine-responsive tumors\, particularly breast cancer and prostate cancer. These diseases in particular represent significant cancer disparities for black populations\, with significantly higher incidence in the case of prostate cancer\, and significantly higher mortality rates for both cancers.\nMembers of this program study hormone signaling in normal and malignant cells\, the role of micronutrients in cancer cell proliferation\, mechanisms by which environmental toxins induce malignancy\, and mechanisms of metastasis and progression\, among other areas of research. \nThe members of the T1 Translational Cancer Research Program focus their research on the processes involved in the mechanisms initiating malignancy and underlying malignant cell growth and metastases\, and the identification of target molecules and development of targeted therapeutics. \nDonate Today to the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer

SUMMARY:GHS vs JLM Spirit Week Game Day
DESCRIPTION:Greensville\, SC. Team Draft will join rival high schools Greenville and JL Mann to celebrate the end of the high schools’ annual Spirit Week competition this Friday\, Sept 13 at Sirrine Stadium. This will be a game to celebrate and honor cancer survivorship. \nDuring halftime\, cancer survivors will be recognized throughout the stadium with balloon luminaries purchased by Spirit Week supporters and the combined grand total of monies raised this week will be revealed. The high schools hope to raise enough money to pay for the 12’ wide x 140’ long “Spirit Bridge” that will be a central feature in the park. \nThis year both J.L. Mann and Greenville High Schools are joining forces to raise funds for one charity – The Cancer Survivors Park\, a project of Patients First. “This park is redefining the meaning of a survivor”\, says Greenville High School Student Body President Charlie Stone. “Cancer is something that affects everyone. When someone is diagnosed with cancer\, everyone around them is diagnosed. A survivor is the person fighting cancer now\, the caregivers\, family and friends of those patients and even those left behind when someone loses the earthly battle with the disease.” J.L. Mann High School Student Body President\, Caroline Grigg\, adds\, “We really wanted to make a large positive impact on the community and we wanted our schools to get involved with something that they could enjoy for years to come and know it would continually touch many lives. The Cancer Survivors Park gives us that opportunity.” \nThe Cancer Survivors Park (CSP)\, to be located on an approximately 3-acre site along the Swamp Rabbit Trail adjacent to the Chamber of Commerce in downtown Greenville\, will provide a place of respite and rejuvenation and will serve as a platform for holistic programs designed to enhance the healing experience. “With a vision to be more than just a another beautiful park\, the CSP has been uniquely designed to blend meditative spaces\, inspirational sculpture and cutting edge technology to encourage each one of us to become an active participant in our own health and healing and to live each moment we are given to its fullest\,” says co-founder and COO Diane Gluck. She adds that “By bringing education\, art and support programs out into the community\, we hope to re-integrate survivorship into the on-going fabric of life.” \nIndeed\, there are no other parks anywhere that combine the healing aspects of open spaces with on-going survivorship and healing programs. Over 10 years in the planning\, the CSP brings together the countless investments and hours of input from families and volunteers with the essential support of numerous community partners – the City of Greenville\, Renewable Water Resources\, Design Strategies\, Arbor Engineering\, Naturaland Trust\, Upstate Forever\, Greenville Health System\, and Bon Secours St. Francis Health System – to make the vision a reality. \nIn that same spirit of healing\, for the first time ever\, Greenville High School and JL Mann High School have channeled their Spirit Week rivalries toward one theme – survivorship\, and one charity – the Cancer Survivors Park. \nDonate Now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer

SUMMARY:Survivors at Soldier Field: Chicago Bears vs. Minnesota Vikings
DESCRIPTION:Chicago\, IL. Survivors Susan Warmerdam\, treated at Northwestern Comprehensive Cancer Center\, and Susan O’Conell\, treated at Rush University Cancer Center\, will be representing Team Draft at the Chicago Bears vs. Minnesota Vikings Game Sunday afternoon. \nSusan Warmerdam represented Team Draft last year at the Chicago Bears game. She has worked tirelessly as an advocate for lung cancer across the nation. Her story is an inspiration and a true testament to the new developments in research and treatment. Here is her story in her own words: \nAt 47\, the news that I had an inoperable and\, according to the medical community\, incurable cancer was devastating. As soon as my initial shock and depression could be forced aside\, I decide that I would beat this disease. I would be the miracle patient\, and I vowed to do everything within my power to fight for my life. I did extensive research in both western and holistic medicine. I selected an oncologist and began treatment at Northwestern with a daily oral chemo drug. At the same time\, I volunteered to be part of a test group for a new experimental drug. At home\, I purged my life of all carcinogenic chemicals\, unnecessary dyes\, fragrances and additives. I took steps to limit my exposure to unnecessary radiation. I overhauled my diet\, completely eliminating sugar\, meats and dairy\, and moved to a primarily plant-based diet with an occasional fish. My oncologist thought all of these steps\, especially my new diet\, were unnecessary and possibly harmful\, but when I returned for my first follow up CT Scan 6 weeks later\, my tumors had shrunk by 30%–70%. The best (“stellar” was the word used) results my doctor had ever seen. \nDonate Now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer \nClick here to view the photos from the game!

SUMMARY:Big Ten Cancer Consortium
DESCRIPTION:Indianapolis\, IN. Opponents on the football field\, a group of eleven schools from the Big Ten athletic conference have come together to launch an ambitious new effort against a common foe: cancer. Team Draft will have the opportunity to meet with the Big Ten Cancer Consortium and discuss what new developments they have been working on. \n“This is a rare opportunity for the universities to work together as part of a regional team science initiative to advance cancer research\,” said Patrick J. Loehrer Sr.\, MD\, director of the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center. “The advantage of this\, particularly during a time of austerity for research\, is that we can build upon the strengths of the institutions and fortify some of the shortcomings.” \nNewly developed clinical trials will be linked to molecular diagnostics\, enabling researchers to understand what drives the cancers to grow and what might be done to stop them from growing.\nThe consortium will also leverage geographical locations and existing relationships among cancer centers. \n“For research to be truly impactful\, we must work together\,” said Maha Hussain\, MD\, FACP\, associate director of clinical research at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. “The synergy\, the collaboration\, the implementation all are aimed at one ultimate goal – making a real difference for patients.”\nThe consortium is meant to create a unique team-research culture in which senior faculty work with and mentor the research leaders of tomorrow. The consortium will provide junior faculty and fellows the opportunity to write\, conduct and complete trials\, which would not normally be done at a single institution or on a national level for young investigators. \nThe 11 schools that comprise the Big Ten Cancer Research Consortium are: Indiana University\, Northwestern University\, Penn State University\, Purdue University\, Rutgers University\, the University of Illinois\, University of Iowa\, University of Michigan\, University of Minnesota\, University of Nebraska\, and University of Wisconsin.\nIndianapolis-based Hoosier Oncology Group will serve as the administrative headquarters for the consortium. \nDonate Now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer

SUMMARY:Kyssi (Khyrstin) Andrews…Tailgating for a cure
DESCRIPTION:Houston\, TX. Team Draft helped our littlest fighter\, Kyssi Andrews celebrate her 5th birthday with the Houston Texans. The Texans are no stranger to Lung Cancer. Jonathan Joseph\, Cornerback for the Houston Texans\, as well as his family is waging their own battle against the disease. Joseph’s father is currently battling lung cancer. \n Khyrstin (Kyssi) Andrews is a very cheerful and energetic [5] year old who resides in Houston\, TX and was born on October 14\, 2008. \nKhyrstin had NO prior symptoms or pain. She was going to daycare everyday\, playing with her friends and being a perfectly normal 3 year old little girl (so we thought). On 5/1/2012 she started urinating blood. Her aunt and a very dear family friend rushed her to the emergency room where she was diagnosed with stage 2 phase 3 Wilm’s Tumor (kidney cancer) and then she was transferred immediately to another local hospital via ambulance for further diagnosis and treatment. Kyssi had 2 major surgeries on 5/4/2012. The 1st surgery was performed to remove her right kidney and the cantaloupe sized cancerous tumor and the 2nd surgery was given to place a portal catheter (port) above her heart in order for her to have her chemotherapy treatments\, receive medications\, blood and platelets when/if needed. \nShortly after surgery was performed\, she started a very aggressive/extensive radiation and chemotherapy treatment which consists of 4 different chemo drugs. She has had non-stop chemo treatments weekly since her treatments began in May. The last of her treatments were in November of 2012 and she was considered in remission on November 27\, 2012 (such a GREAT day). \nOn March 1\, 2013\, Kyssi went back to the hospital for what we though would’ve been only her 3 month checkup and scans\, not knowing that we’d return home with our lives and hearts changed yet “AGAIN”. She was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer (in both lungs) and was given less than a 50% chance of survival. That was the “report of the doctors”….we’re waiting on the “report of the Lord”. Every since that day….life has been ever so different for us. She is now on totally different chemotherapy medications that are so much more stronger than before\, and it keeps her a lot more sick. Kyssi has had multiple blood and platelet transfusions\, MORE frequent hospital stays\, constant abdominal pain\, nausea\, vomiting\, loss of appetite\, loss of sleep and also the loss of her hair for the 2nd time due to treatments. She’s definitely the toughest [5] year old kid that most people know. \nTo read more about Kyssi’s story\, and to show your support for her and her family\, please visit her facebook page: \nhttps://www.facebook.com/KhyrstinKyssiAndrews

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Stadium: UK : Jacksonville Jaguars vs. San Francisco 49ers
DESCRIPTION:Wembley Stadium\, London\, UK. British Lung cancer survivor Joe Suckling will represent Team Draft at the NFL’s second International game in London this season. The Sucklings will witness an American Football game between\, last year’s NFC Champion\, San Francisco 49ers and the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium this Sunday. This event serves to cap-off a week of international representation\, starting with Winnipeg\, Manitoba\, Canada and ending with London\, England\, UK. \nJoe Suckling is being treated at London’s Institute of Cancer Research\, one of the world’s most influential cancer research institutes\, with an outstanding record of achievement dating back more than 100 years. \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of lung cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nNovember is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. In 2012\, Team Draft marked the occasion by launching our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nLeveraging our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, we arranged to have lung cancer survivors attend games at NFL stadiums across the country during the last two months of the 2012-2013 season. By the time the initiative concluded at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii\, more than 30 lung cancer survivors representing 30 cancer centers and nearly every NFL team had participated. Given the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, we have expanded it beyond the NFL to the NBA\, the NHL and MLS—and this year\, London\, UK! As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nSpecial thanks to the NFL\, NFL UK\, Stand up to Cancer\, London’s Institute for Cancer Research\, and Team Draft representative\, Former NFL linebacker and London native\, Aden Durde for joining forces with Team Draft to make this experience possible. \nDonate Now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!
