SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every College Stadium: University of Minnesota Golden Gophers
DESCRIPTION:Minneapolis\, MN. Lung cancer survivor-advocate Michelle Gydesen\, will represent Team Draft at TCF Bank Stadium on Saturday. Michelle and her son\, Henry\, will watch the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers take on the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers as a part of Team Draft’s “A Survivor at Every College Stadium.” \n\n“I’m honored to be a guest of Team Draft at the Gopher football game. As I’ve spoken with Chris over the past week and learned more about Team Draft\, it is evident his mission is to reduce the stigma of lung cancer and increase funding for the leading cancer killer by putting faces to the disease. I’m excited at this opportunity to provide hope to other survivors and to reduce the stigma of the disease by sharing my story. I have first hand experience at the advancements in treatment that have occurred over the past 15 years. At the age of 48 I am a two time lung cancer survivor. I was 31 years old when I was first diagnosed. I had a lobectomy by a surgical procedure called a Thoracotomy. This is one of the most painful surgeries to heal from. In November of 2013 I was once again diagnosed with lung cancer. Thoracic surgery has come a long way since my first diagnosis. I had another lobectomy\, this time through a less invasive procedure called VATS. I recovered much quicker and it was less painful. It made a huge difference in my recovery. \n\nAdvocacy efforts over the past years finally seem to making some progress. In April of 2015 I traveled to Washington D.C. to attend a lung cancer summit organized by the Lung Cancer Alliance. With the LCA\, I visited the offices of my legislators. During our visit with Congressman Rick Nolan\, he told us he was going to form a Lung Cancer Caucus. This past August\, it came to fruition. I felt like we made a difference! \n\nI look forward to continuing the momentum with Team Draft!” \n\nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \n\nLeveraging our connections with the NFL and the NCAA\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \n\nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \n\nSpecial thanks to the Linda and Jerry Wortman\, University of Minnesota\, University of Minnesota Cancer Center\, and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible. \n\nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer! www.teamdraft.org

SUMMARY:A Survivor At Every Stadium: Minnesota Vikings
DESCRIPTION:Minneapolis\, MN. Mayo Clinic lung cancer survivor-advocate Shelly Engfer-Triebenbach will represent Team Draft at the Vikings game on Sunday. Shelly and her family will watch their Minnesota Vikings take on the visiting Kansas City Chiefs at TCF Bank Stadium. \n\nIn November 2014\, Shelly wrote a letter to the editor of the Echo Press. \n\nTo the editor:\nNovember is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. More people die from lung cancer than all the other cancers combined. Yet\, when you look at the funding for research\, lung cancer is the least funded of all cancers. Why is the most deadliest type of cancer the least funded? \n\nFor far too many years\, lung cancer has been associated with smoking. Growing up\, I remember hearing about “The Great American Smoke Out” that takes place in November\, insinuating that you have to smoke to get lung cancer. That is false. All it takes to get lung cancer is lungs. Yes\, lungs. We all have them\, we all need them\, we are all susceptible to lung cancer. \n\nSixty percent of all new lung cancer diagnoses are among people who have never smoked or who are former smokers. \n\nOne in 14 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer. That statistic is staggering. Even more staggering is the lack of funding for lung cancer research. \n\nThere is a need for early screenings. Does that sound familiar? That is key for all cancers. However\, the most deadliest type of cancer\, lung cancer\, is the furthest behind in research. The majority of lung cancer patients are stage four. This is because there is no standard test for early detection. \n\nI implore you to stop the stigma\, raise the awareness and please\, financially support the research of this awful disease.\nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \n\nSpecial thanks to the Linda and Jerry Wortman\, Mayo Clinic\, Minnesota Vikings\, Vikings Coach George Stewart and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible. \n\nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer! www.teamdraft.org

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Rink: New York Islanders
DESCRIPTION:Brooklyn\, NY. Lung cancer survivor-advocates Alisha Brenes and Barbara Kotler represented Team Draft at the Barclays Center on Thursday night. \n\nMy name is Alisa Brenes and I am a lung cancer survivor. I guess you can say my lung cancer journey started before I was born. My mom\, my maternal grandfather and most of his siblings all died of lung cancer. \n\nI was diagnosed with Stage 3 lung cancer at 43 years of age\, just a few months after my mom passed away of lung cancer. It still boggles my mind to this day that I was taking care of my mother during her last days while at the same time the same tumor was growing in my lung. \n\nI had a third of my lung removed and followed up with chemotherapy. I was a single mother of 10 year old twin boys at the time. They were in elementary school and I didn’t even know if I would be there for their grade school graduation. Thanks to God and the Universe and my amazing doctors\, I lived to see my twins graduate from college. My next goal is to live to see them employed 🙂 \n\nI am committed to spreading awareness and supporting others as a Lifeline Support Mentor\, helping newly diagnosed patients. I also sit on the Committee Board of the Breathe Deep NYC yearly Walk For A Cure and we have raised over $500\,000 for lung cancer research. I have so much gratitude for Chris and all he does and am honored to be a part of Team Draft. \n\nI am thrilled to be going to see the Islanders\, I used to go often as a young girl until work got in the way. What better way to celebrate all my brother and sister survivors! \n\nAlisha and Barbara watched the New York Islanders take on the visiting Carolina Hurricanes. #ASurvivorAtEveryRink #HockeyFightsCancer #NHL\n\nMy name is Barbara Kotler I am a Lung Cancer Survivor. I was diagnosed December 2008 with stage 1A adenocarcimona. I had a upper right lobectomy at NY Presbyterian-Columbia Medical Center with Surgeon Dr.Joshua Sonett. \n\nI am grateful to be celebrating life with every breath I take! My family is my world\, I married 31 years to my husband Steven and I have two Amazing sons Adam and Myles. \n\nI am very active in raising awareness for lung cancer I’ve raised over 100\,000.00 for lung cancer research and just finished filming a video for Myriad Genetics helping to bring to the forefront a tissue test to determine risk of reoccurrence in early stage lung cancer patients. \n\nMy message is empower yourself with information to be your own health advocate! I am grateful to the Chris Draft Foundation and Chris Draft for their dedication in helping survivors like myself by raising awareness and changing the face of lung cancer! \n\nGiven the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, in 2012\, we expanded it beyond the gridiron to the ice through our Survivor at Every Rink initiative. SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every College Stadium: Texas Tech Red Raiders
DESCRIPTION:Lubbock\, TX. Lung cancer survivor-advocate Janet Dertien represented Team Draft at Texas Tech’s Jones AT&T Stadium on Saturday. Janet and her family watched the Texas Tech Red Raiders take on the visiting Oklahoma State Cowboys. #RedRaidersvsCowboys #TTUvsOSU #ASurvivoratEveryCollegeStadium #tacklinglungcancer \n\n\nTexas Tech Head Coach Kliff Kinsbury #tacklinglungcancer \n\nHe keeps a copy of the eulogy from his mother’s funeral in his locker. Sally Kingsbury wrote the eulogy herself as she prepared to die from sarcoma\, a form of lung cancer\, in 2005. \n\nKingsbury admires his mom for displaying grace in using the eulogy to honor all of the people in her life as it drew to an end. He recites the eulogy’s opening line from memory: “It’s been one hell of a party\, Woodrow.” She cribbed that from The Lonesome Dove\, her favorite show. In life and in death\, it was her motto. \n\nKingsbury’s mom and dad\, the two biggest influences in his life\, were opposites. His dad\, Tim\, is a former high school football coach\, an alpha male Vietnam veteran. His mom was a free spirit with a permanent smile who delighted in being loud and boisterous and embarrassing her two boys (Kliff has an older brother\, Klint). \n\nSo idyllic was Kingsbury’s upbringing in New Braunfels\, Texas\, that he says\, “I have no excuse to ever do anything but live an amazing life considering the way I was raised.”\n\nHe briefly left the New York Jets to be with her in her last days. “She was really the only person I ever showed weakness to\,” he says. He talked to her about girl problems\, confidence issues\, whatever troubled him\, and she always listened.\n\n“I still talk to her a bunch\,” he says. “When I’m at home or before games\, I just kind of talk to her on my own.”\n\nSeeing her stay strong as she succumbed to the sarcoma\, and the loving way his dad took care of her\, changed Kingsbury.\n\n“I stopped worrying about things as much\, what people thought. Just cut loose. Watching her go through that\, how she handled it\, I’ll never have a bad day after that\,” he says. “To her last dying breath\, it was about\, ‘Hey\, make sure your dad’s OK\, make sure you’re OK. Are you going to be OK? Is your brother going to be OK?’ Not once was it about her. That selflessness\, and that courage\, was something that always stuck with me.” \nRead the full Bleacher Report story \n\nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer.\n\nLeveraging our connections with the NFL and the NCAA\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country.\n\nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.\n\nSpecial thanks to the TTU Head Coach Kliff Kingsbury\, Texas Tech\, the Fehoko Family\, West Texas Cancer Survivors Network\, Texas Tech Cancer Center and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible.\n\nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Rink: Colorado Avalanche
DESCRIPTION:Denver\, CO. Denver lung cancer survivors Hazel Senz\, Kim Aldridge and Jean Landsverk represented Team Draft at the Pepsi Center on Tuesday night. #HockeyFightsCancer #changingthefaceoflungcancer #LCAM15 \n\n\n I’m a patient of a wonderful man\, Dr. Kono. He has invited my husband John and I to attend Tuesday’s Avalanche game as a guest of TeamDraft. Something that we are truly looking forward to! I have had lung cancer for almost three years now. My treatments included eight hours of surgery\, 40 sessions of radiation\, and three courses of chemotherapy. The pain became so unmanageable that I have no recollection of last April! Dr. Kono persevered\, however and started me on Opdivo as soon as it was approved by the FDA. Since then my life has completely turned around!! The tumors have stabilized and my pain is managed with minimal drug therapy. John and I are enjoying traveling again including a vacation in Mexico. We plan on celebrating our 43rd anniversary this year in Las Vegas or Hawaii.\n\nWe are extremely grateful that you have initiated a national effort to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. And we pledge to support your program in any way we can. Only through these efforts and dedicated doctors like Dr. Kono will we find a cure for this horrible disease. ~ Kim Aldridge\n\n\nThe survivors watched the Colorado Avalanche defeat the Calgary Flames 6-3.\n\nI was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in April 2014 and given 1 year to live. I was not a smoker and had been participating in triathlons in the years before my diagnosis. This life changing news caused a pivot in my focus but not a change in my positive outlook.\n\nPrior to my diagnosis\, I was a Senior Vice President of Technology Healthcare firm. After my diagnosis\, i took a leave of absence from work and focused on my treatment. I went through Platinum Chemo\, had radiation treatments on my brain and hoped for the best I wanted to make the most out of the time I have left. Dr Kono and Dr Doebele suggested a test by Foundations Medicine that might help with further treatments. I sent a tumor sample to Foundations Medicine to conduct a Genomic Profile and found out I was ALK positive. I just started Crizotinib and am hoping it buys me more time. Since my diagnosis I entered and MBA program that will complete in August and hope to continue skiing this season (last year I got 15 days in hoping for more this year!). I was a 51 year old bridesmaid in my sister’s wedding last week end and was so happy to be there! ~ Jean Landsverk \n \nGiven the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, in 2012\, we expanded it beyond the gridiron to the ice through our Survivor at Every Rink initiative. As part of Team Draft’s National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer\, this celebration of survivorship raises awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers across North America.\n\nThrough our Survivor at Every Rink initiative\, we are working with all NHL teams to have a lung cancer survivor attend one of the team’s home games as a part of their national initiative\, Hockey Fights Cancer!\n\nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Colorado Avalanche\, the NHL\, Kaiser Denver\, Dr. Scott Kono\, CU Cancer Center and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible.\n\nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every College Stadium: Nebraska Cornhuskers
DESCRIPTION:Lincoln\, NE. Nebraska lung cancer survivor-advocates Kimberly Buchmeier and Leah Bochnicek represented Team Draft at the Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Kim\, Leah and their families watched the Nebraska Cornhuskers upset the undefeated Michigan State Spartans. #Tacklinglungcancer #LCAM15 #ESPN\n\n\nKimberly Buchmeier of Auburn\, Neb.\, was diagnosed with non-small cell adenocarcinoma lung cancer in March 2011\, at age 37. She underwent a lower right lobe lobectomy\, followed by four months of chemotherapy\, and today receives regular CT scans to ensure that her cancer has not returned.\n\nThough she feels good now\, getting the treatment she needed was a huge challenge. Auburn\, a town of just 3\,000 people\, did not have a medical oncologist\, so Buchmeier was forced to travel 150 miles round trip to the Southeast Nebraska Cancer Center\, in Lincoln\, for her thoracic surgery\, chemotherapy and follow-ups. – \n\nRead more about Kimberly\n\nKimberly\, Leah\, and their guests will watch the University of Nebraska Corhuskers take on the Michigan State Spartans. #Tacklinglungcancer #ESPN #LCAM15 \n\nOMAHA\, Neb. —She never smoked a day in her life and now a healthy\, active mother of three is fighting to stay alive after being diagnosed with Stage IV lung cancer in December.\n\nDoctors diagnosed Leah with adenocarcinoma\, though she says she has never smoked a day in her life. Leah Bochnicek takes on many roles – mother\, wife\, co-worker\, and cancer patient.\n\n“It doesn’t matter how healthy you think you are\, your body is a crazy thing\,” Bochnicek said.\n\nShe developed an audible wheeze in her throat last summer\, which turned into a persistent cough. A chest X-ray revealed she had pneumonia\, even though doctors couldn’t hear it with a stethoscope.\n\n“And the reason they couldn’t hear it was because I had a tumor above the pneumonia that was blocking it off\,” she said.\n\nIn addition to the tumor\, surgery revealed spots on the exterior of her lung and nodules on the chest wall. Doctors diagnosed her with adenocarcinoma. Bochnicek said she has never smoked a day in her life.\n\n“No one can explain to me why I got lung cancer. What is it? What environmental factor caused it?” she asked.\n\nRead more about Leah \n\nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer.\n\nLeveraging our connections with the NFL and the NCAA\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country.\n\nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.\n\nSpecial thanks to the University of Nebraska\, University of Nebraska Cancer Center\, and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible.\n\nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Rink: Carolina Hurricanes
DESCRIPTION:Raleigh\, NC. North Carolina lung cancer survivors Dusty Donalson and Tomma Hargraves will represented Team Draft at PNC Arena on Saturday night. They watched the Carolina Hurricanes defeat the Ottawa Senators. #HockeyFightsCancer #LCAM15 \n\n\nDusty Joy Donaldson\n\nIn September 2005\, at the age of 51\, Dusty Donaldson was diagnosed with lung cancer. It was then she learned the eye-opening facts about this disease and became a passionate advocate for lung cancer awareness\, research and early detection. For the first few years after her diagnosis\, Dusty volunteered with several nonprofits\, including the American Cancer Society\, National Lung Cancer Partnership\, Lung Cancer Alliance and others before founding a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in March 2010. The mission of the Dusty Joy Foundation is advancing lung cancer awareness\, early detection and compassion for people impacted by lung cancer. Dusty enjoys collaborating with other nonprofits focused on lung cancer advocacy\, including one of her favorites\, the Chris Draft Family Foundation. Dusty serves as co-leader of the Lung Cancer Action Network (LungCAN)\, a coalition of all the U.S.-based nonprofits dedicated to lung cancer.\n\nPrior to her diagnosis\, Dusty was a former journalist and public relations professional. She earned a BA in journalism from Norfolk State University and an MA in journalism from Regent University. She worked as a writer and editor before entering the field of public relations where she worked for Womble Carlyle and Wake Forest University. Dusty also earned a nonprofit management certificate from Duke University. She now uses her journalism and public relations skills to raise awareness about the number one cancer killer.\n\nTomma Hargraves\n\n Eight years after her diagnosis\, lung cancer survivor Tomma Hargraves is training to become a lay navigator with UNC Lineberger\, giving back to the hospital that she credits with saving her life.\n\nIn October of 2006\, Tomma Hargraves found a small lump in her neck. Although she felt very healthy\, she went to her doctor to have the lump checked out. A few days later\, she received a diagnosis that shocked her: Stage 3B non-small cell lung cancer. The tumor was in the right lobe of her lungs\, and the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes on the left side of her neck.\n\n“I wish I had known that non-smokers and people who had quit long ago could get lung cancer\,” says Hargraves. I thought I had done everything right\, and I still got lung cancer.”\n\nRead more about Tomma’s journey \n\nGiven the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, in 2012\, we expanded it beyond the gridiron to the ice through our Survivor at Every Rink initiative. SUMMARY:Thursday Night Football - A Survivor at Every Stadium: New York Jets
DESCRIPTION:East Rutherford\, NJ. Lung cancer survivor Johanna Medina and Weil Cornell Dr. Brendon Stiles represented Team Draft on Thursday Night at MetLife Stadium. They watched a Thursday Night Football match up between the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills. #Tacklinglungcancer #LCAM15\n\n\nJohanna Medina\n\nAt age 39\, she had a finding on her chest X-ray and CT that many pulmonologists would have just assumed to be infectious in a non-smoker her age. Her pulmonologist\, Ben Harvey\, stuck with it though and eventually diagnosed her with lung cancer. Dr. Stiles performed what should be a curative resection on her two years ago and she has been disease free since. Johanna is a New York native and a mother of two young kids.\n\nDr. Brendon Stiles\n\nAs a thoracic surgeon at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City\, James Wood High School graduate Dr. Brendon Stiles saves patients from the same disease that claimed the life of his father\, former Frederick County Board of Supervisors Chairman Kenneth “Kenny” Stiles.\n\nIt has been 10 years and a couple of weeks since Stiles\, a dairy farmer in Clear Brook\, died of lung cancer at age 61. His son was at Winchester Medical Center on Wednesday afternoon giving a presentation about the latest developments in treating the deadly disease.\n\nA 1990 graduate of James Wood\, Stiles initially thought he’d be a veterinarian.\n\n“I grew up on a farm\, and I liked animals\, but then I realized I liked people more than animals\,” he said during an interview Wednesday morning.\n\nStiles’s twin brother\, Ryan\, is a lawyer in Wichita\, Kan. His mother\, Tricia\, is a legislative assistant for 27th District state Sen. Jill Vogel\,R-Upperville. After going to college and medical school at the University of Virginia\, Stiles completed a general surgery residency in Charlottesville as well. While a resident\, he took time out to do scientific research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NewYork. Stiles\, 42\, then did a cardiothoracic residency at Weill Cornell\, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Sloan Kettering. He has stayed on at Weill Cornell\, and in addition to being a thoracic surgeon\, he’s an associate professor\, and does clinical and basic science research.\n\n“Most of my practice is lung cancer\,” Stiles said. “I was sort of already on that path when [my father] got diagnosed\, but obviously\, that’s strengthened my resolve to take care of lung cancer patients. “It’s made a tremendous difference. It’s hard to imagine being a doctor and not seeing the other side of the disease you’re treating.”\n\nRead more about Dr. Brendon Stiles\n\nBreathing new life to lung cancer research\n\nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer.\n\nLeveraging our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country.\n\nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.\n\nSpecial thanks to the NFL\, New York Jets\, Meyer Cancer Center\, Weil Cornell Medical College\, Dr. Brendon Stiles and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible.\n\nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Stadium: Oakland Raiders
DESCRIPTION:Oakland\, CA. Kaiser Health lung cancer survivor-advocate Don Stranathan represented Team Draft at the O.co Coliseum on Sunday. Don watched the Silver and Black lose a tough game to Adrian’s Peterson’s Minnesota Vikings. #RaiderNation #Tacklinglungcancer #LCAM15\n\nDon Stranathan\n\nMy last promises to her: Advocate for lung cancer awareness and live life to the fullest\n\nThe bad news is that I have cancer. The good news is that cancer has taught me to live life to the fullest. I never allow cancer to define me. I rarely miss an opportunity to hike\, bike\, or do anything that strengthens my immune system and keeps me out in nature.\n\nIn October 2011 I met Penny Blume\, the love of my life\, on a lung cancer support community on Inspire. Penny left this earth on Jan. 21\, 2014 after battling small cell lung cancer for 32 months. Penny and I spent our time together traveling back and forth from New York to California. She passed at my home in Santa Rosa\, Calif.\, after trying one last clinical trial at Stanford Cancer Center.\n\nPenny and I turned to each other for emotional support to battle our cancers and fell in love. It was after a couple of months of texting and chatting on social media that we decided to meet. Penny flew to California for her first visit in January 2012\, and the rest is history.\n\nMy relationship with Penny also marked the beginning of my advocacy work for lung cancer. It started when a friend of ours asked us to post our story on a lung cancer survivors group on Facebook. I posted something\, and then Penny and I decided to repost it on Inspire\, since it was the site that brought us together. In September 2012 our story was shared by ABC News and Good Morning America. In the following weeks\, it was shared and tweeted all over the world…\n\nMy last promises to Penny were that I would continue to live life to the fullest and advocate for lung cancer research and awareness. One day at a time I try to keep those promises to her.\n\n– See more at: http://scopeblog.stanford.edu/2014/11/18/my-last-promises-to-her-advocate-for-lung-cancer-awareness-and-live-life-to-the-fullest/#sthash.nz4BlwDO.dpuf\n\nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer.\n\nLeveraging our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country.\n\nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Oakland Raiders\, Kaiser Health\, Genentech and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible.\n\nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer! \n

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Stadium: Denver Broncos
DESCRIPTION:Denver\, CO. CU Cancer Center lung cancer survivor-advocates Jonathan Wilmot and Hazel Henz represented Team Draft at Sports Authority Field on Sunday. The survivors watched Peyton Manning’s Denver Broncos take on the Kansas City Chiefs. #Tacklinglungcancer #NFL #LCAM15\n\n\nHazel Senz \n\nI am a 55 year old mother of two beautiful girls and wife to the love of my life. On March 5\, 2014\, my life changed forever when I was diagnosed with stage IV non- small cell lung cancer. I didn’t have any symptoms and my diagnosis was an incidental finding from another routine test. It (my diagnosis) came as quite a shock because I was a healthy\, active person who enjoyed running\, skiing and hiking\, and never smoked.\n\nMy tumor was tested and it came back positive for a mutation. This is when mutations are good. In fact\, when one of my doctors found out about my mutation\, she came into my office with the results in her hand\, jumping up and down\, almost in tears\, saying “This changes everything!!” And she was right. My tumor came back ALK positive meaning I could benefit from targeted therapy. The targeted therapy was an ALK inhibitor called Crizotinib. I have been on Crizotinib since April 2014. The drug has allowed me to live a relatively normal life. I experience some side effects\, but nothing that isn’t manageable. Because of the continued research and development in lung cancer\, I am confident that one day lung cancer will become more like a chronic disease rather than the death sentence it was once perceived to be. This cannot happen unless lung cancer gets the global support and funding needed to continue the research necessary to find a cure.\n\nI feel honored to represent Team Draft’s initiative\, A Survivor at Every Stadium\, to show the public that I am the face of stage IV lung cancer. I want to eliminate the stigma of lung cancer and to educate the public that anyone can get lung cancer; even folks like me who never smoked. If you have lungs\, you can get lung cancer. Please support Team Draft as it tries to raise awareness and change the face of lung cancer.\n \nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer.\n\nLeveraging our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country.\n\nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Denver Broncos\, CU Cancer Center\, Dr. Ross Camidge and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible.\n\nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Rink: Nashville Predators
DESCRIPTION:Nashville\, TN. Lung cancer survivor-advocate Jenny White led a group of lung cancer survivor-advocates to the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville\, TN on Tuesday night. The survivors watched the Nashville Predators defeat the visiting Anaheim Ducks. #PredsvsDucks #HockeyFightsCancer #LCAM15 \n\nNothing Shall Be Impossible \n\nJenny White came through her experience with cancer a changed woman.\n\n“I now realize I am going to die someday. I started asking myself ‘what am I doing with my life?’ I think differently now. I always thought I had all the time in the world. Now\, I know I’d better get moving.”\n\nSince that time\, Jenny has gone to school on women and lung cancer. What she has learned has been shocking: More women will die of lung cancer than breast\, cervical and ovarian cancers combined. More non-smokers will die of lung cancer than those with melanoma\, brain and thyroid cancers combined. Most of those are women. A woman’s five-year survival rate for lung cancer is 18% versus breast cancer at 89%.\n\nSo Jenny got involved. She founded the Tennessee chapter of the Lung Cancer Alliance\, a Washington\, D.C.-based nonprofit working for more federally funded lung cancer research and dedicated solely to patient support and advocacy for people living with lung cancer or those at risk for the disease.\n\n“There’s no pink army for lung cancer like there is for breast cancer\,” she said. “So\, I’m creating our own army.”\n\n“People assume if you have a lung cancer diagnosis that you smoke\,” she said\, “and they stop listening. Lung cancer research is minimal and grossly underfunded. An overwhelming percentage of the time\, people diagnosed with this disease either never smoked or they quit between 15 and 30 years ago.”\n\nRead the full story\n\nMartha Lesnick\n\nI’m a songwriter\, and a two time lung cancer survivor….\n\nPlease find a video link (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Keurd2TMcNc) of a song I wrote (“Breathe Hope”) several years ago for a LUNGevity-sponsored event. It’s an honor for me to make this contribution to our cause.\n\n“I am grateful to Team Draft and the Preds for making tonight possible. We have a close-knit\, enthusiastic group of survivors here in Nashville who are involved with different organizations and who are very supportive of each other.”\n\n\nPatty Fought\n\n“Thank-you so very much for a great evening of hockey fun! I appreciate what Team Draft is doing to put a face on lung cancer. Sometimes I feel like I don’t belong in the groups because I didn’t need chemo or radiation\, but I remind myself that what I had was cancer and that I still have a couple of nodes that require chest CTs every 6 months and blood tests every 3 months. Next month I have a full body scan scheduled\, also. So thank-you! We are BIG hockey fans and thoroughly enjoyed the game!”\n\nGiven the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, in 2012\, we expanded it beyond the gridiron to the ice through our Survivor at Every Rink initiative. As part of Team Draft’s National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer\, this celebration of survivorship raises awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers across North America.\n\nThrough our Survivor at Every Rink initiative\, we are working with all NHL teams to have a lung cancer survivor attend one of the team’s home games as a part of their national initiative\, Hockey Fights Cancer!\n\nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Nashville Predators\, the NHL\, St. Thomas Health\, Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center\, Tennessee Oncology\, Gilda’s Club Nashville\, lung cancer survivor-advocate Jenny White and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible.\n\nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL - A Survivor at Every Stadium: Jacksonville Jags
DESCRIPTION:Jacksonville\, FL. Lung cancer survivor-advocate Samantha Mixon\, and her family\, represented Team Draft at Everbank Stadium on Thursday night. They watched the Jacksonville Jaguars defeat Marcus Mariota’s Tennessee Titans. #Tacklinglungcancer #NFL #ThursdayNightFootball #LCAM15\n\nKeeping My Faith – Living with Stage IV Lung Cancer ~ Samantha Mixon\n\nToday I went to see a counselor at our church. I absolutely love St. Simons Community Church and the family of people we’ve grown with there. I reached out because Karley recently told me that she felt like she needed more faith\, it wasn’t strong enough.\n\nI totally understood. How could it be strong enough to understand your mom has stage 4 lung cancer when you’re only 10? Why would God do this to us?\n\nWell\, I want everyone\, including Karley\, to understand. All of our days are numbered. We are all going to die one day\, some sooner than others. What is important is that we live the way He would want us to live. There is a purpose for all of us. Mine may be this blog\, reaching out and helping people\, raising my girl\, I don’t know. And I won’t know until I’m at those pearly gates. Neither will any of you. So\, I do have complete faith in my healing. But\, where that healing takes place\, that is up to God. That is something we do not have control over\, so what is the sense in worrying?\n\nThat’s what I want Karley to know. I will be fine. Whether it be here or in heaven. She doesn’t have to worry about me. Yes\, I get sad because I worry about her\, but I can’t control what happens. I only pray that she is fine without me one day. She’s a strong girl and I pray she will continue to have the love and support she needs to deal with the big things that come her way. She’s been through so much.\n\nWe are going back to that counselor 12/1 to both talk to her. She was so helpful. We are also going to the Jacksonville Jaguars game with Team Draft Thursday so I’ll update Friday. And my 3 year cancerversary is coming up 11/27!\n\nRead the full blog\n\nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer.\n\nLeveraging our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country.\n\nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Jacksonville Jaguars\, Piedmont Health Cancer Center\, and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible.\n\nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

If I can play a role in helping\, then I am pleased to do so.” \nI was diagnosed with Anaplastic Large Cell Kinase (ALK) in June 2014. In May of 2014\, I had a cough that got progressively worse. My ENT had me get with my primary care doctor to have an X-ray. The X-ray showed that I had a 2 1/3’ mass on my upper left lobe. I had surgery to remove the upper left lobe and three lymph nodes August 1\, 2014 by Dr. Robert Cerfolio. My Oncologist is Dr. Francisco Robert Vizcarrando. I had four chemotherapy sessions starting in September 2014 and ended in November 2014. After the surgery\, a blood clot was discovered in my pulmonary vein and I was on a blood thinner (Enoxaparin) until February/March 2015. I started Xalkori in February 2015. \nRonnie Miller \nThanks for this opportunity to attend the game at the University of Alabama. DESCRIPTION:Ottawa\, Ontario\, Canada. Lung cancer survivor-advocate Elizabeth Dessureault\, and her husband\, represented Team Draft at the Canadian Tire Centre on Saturday night. They watched the Ottawa Senators take on the Philadelphia Flyers. #HockeyFightsCancer #LungCancerCanada #LCAM15\n\n\nWe had a fantastic time and want to thank Team Draft so mcuh for making it happen!! Your “survivor at every rink” is doing amazing things and we truly appreciate it!! The video post has over 1000 likes and has surely helped to change the face of lung cancer!\n\nWatch the video of Elizabeth at the Ottawa Senators game\n\nElizabeth Dessureault\n\nWhen she was told she had lung cancer\, Elizabeth Dessureault says\, she was unable to process what she was hearing. “It didn’t make sense to me that a 26-year-old\, healthy\, non-smoker could get lung cancer.”\n\nHers is not the face usually associated with the disease. But\, as smoking rates decline\, people like Dessureault — young\, non-smokers\, often female — are increasingly being diagnosed with the cancer that is the deadliest and receives less research funding than other major cancers.\n\nWhile smoking is still the leading cause of lung cancer\, the majority of new patients are people who never smoked or no longer smoke\, according to a new report from Lung Cancer Canada\, which paints a picture of uneven treatment across the country\, poor early diagnosis and low research investment.\n\nDessureault’s case is typical of these new faces in some ways — by the time she was diagnosed\, her non-small-cell lung cancer was already well advanced. The first surgeon she saw told Dessureault there was nothing he could do and gave her a year to live. “It was very traumatizing.”\n\nWhat is far from typical is the fact that Dessureault was pregnant when she received the devastating diagnosis. Her son Jack — born two months early so that his mother could receive more aggressive treatment — is now a thriving four months old. But Dessureault’s experiences have inspired to her raise awareness about the new realities of lung cancer and the need for support.\n\n“I want to help change the face of lung cancer\,” she said.\n\n\nRead the full article\n\nGiven the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, in 2012\, we expanded it beyond the gridiron to the ice through our Survivor at Every Rink initiative. SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Stadium: Carolina Panthers
DESCRIPTION:Charlotte\, NC. Lung cancer survivor-advocates Edwina and Tomma represented Team Draft at Bank of America Stadium on Sunday. The survivors watched the undefeated Carolina Panthers improve their record to 10-0 by defeating the Washington Redskins. #Tacklinglungcancer #Levine #UNC #LCAM15 \nEdwina \nEdwina hadn’t smoked a day in her life\, yet she was faced with the reality of having a stage of lung cancer where 50% of patients don’t make it past a year. Lung cancer often goes undiagnosed in its early stages and Edwina experienced no warning signs that it had spread to other areas of her body… \nBecause of Levine Cancer Institute’s integrated approach to cancer care delivery\, Edwina was able to receive all her care without leaving the Charlotte/Monroe area. It also kept her close to another integrated system – a circle of family members who all live along the same stretch of road in rural Monroe. \n“I’m the youngest of 11 children\,” said Edwina. “My family treated me the way I was acting – like everything was going to be all right. They kept encouraging me as if I wasn’t handed a bunch of bad news. Looking back on it\, I wonder\, ‘How did I do that? How did I make it through? It was God’s grace and mercy and the prayers of my loved ones that brought me through this. I could have never made it without God\, and the support of the Levine Cancer Institute Team.” \nRead the full story \nTomma \nEight years after her diagnosis\, lung cancer survivor Tomma Hargraves is training to become a lay navigator with UNC Lineberger\, giving back to the hospital that she credits with saving her life. \nIn October of 2006\, Tomma Hargraves found a small lump in her neck. Although she felt very healthy\, she went to her doctor to have the lump checked out. A few days later\, she received a diagnosis that shocked her: Stage 3B non-small cell lung cancer. The tumor was in the right lobe of her lungs\, and the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes on the left side of her neck. \n“I wish I had known that non-smokers and people who had quit long ago could get lung cancer\,” says Hargraves. I thought I had done everything right\, and I still got lung cancer.” \nAfter seeking several opinions and researching her treatment options\, Hargraves decided on UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Two things set UNC Lineberger apart for her. “I was offered an aggressive clinical trial that included chemo\, radiation and a targeted oral medication\,” she says. “But what I really loved about UNC was the team approach. I didn’t have to go from doctor to doctor. They all came to me in my room and talked to me about their roles: the radiation oncologist; the thoracic oncologist; the nurse navigator. The N.C. Cancer Hospital has such a warm atmosphere\, and I feel like the people really care about me.” \nRead the full story \nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nLeveraging our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nSpecial thanks to the Carolina Panthers\, Levine Cancer Institute\, UNC Lineberger Cancer Center and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

Thank you so much\, Team Draft\, for giving me the chance to go! \nGiven the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, in 2012\, we expanded it beyond the gridiron to the ice through our Survivor at Every Rink initiative. As part of Team Draft’s National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer\, this celebration of survivorship raises awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers across North America. \nThrough our Survivor at Every Rink initiative\, we are working with all NHL teams to have a lung cancer survivor attend one of the team’s home games as a part of their national initiative\, Hockey Fights Cancer! \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nSpecial thanks to the Dallas Stars\, the NHL\, Lungevity\, Free to Breathe\, Genetech and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:Two Commitments! To Each Other and Team Draft!
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta\, GA. Four years ago today\, Chris and Keasha were married\, and like most couples on their wedding day\, they made a commitment to each other–a commitment to that each would love\, honor and cherish the other. But they also made a broader commitment to all those who\, like Keasha\, were battling lung cancer–a commitment to tackle the disease. You see\, it was on that day\, standing side-by-side\, that Chris and Keasha launched Team Draft. And while Keasha may no longer be physically with us\, her fight and her spirit live on through our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer.\n\n\nKeasha knew that it takes a team to tackle cancer. She also understood the dedication and commitment it would take to change the face of lung cancer. So\, on her wedding day\, she told her guests that she didn’t want presents. Instead\, she asked them to make a donation to Team Draft to support the commitment she and Chris made that day to all of those fighting the disease. Please help us celebrate Team Draft’s four year anniversary by making a donation today. Your donation will ensure that we can continue to honor Keasha’s commitment by raising lung cancer awareness\, increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a smokers disease and celebrating all those survivors who are living longer and living stronger every day.\n\nPlease share our story and the video of Chris and Keasha’s wedding with your friends and family\, but please share the commitment to tackle lung cancer with them as well.\n\nDONATE NOW to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!
