SUMMARY:Team Draft's 5th Annual Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta\, GA. Team Draft’s fifth annual Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge kicked off on November 1\, 2018. This unique fund raising challenge gives lung cancer survivors the opportunity to raise funds for public awareness and cutting-edge research that is giving new hope to those battling this often misunderstood disease. The top three fundraisers\, Patty Watkins\, Gina Hollenbeck and Jeff Meckstroth were announced on December 31\, 2018. \nPatty & Kent Watkins are heading to Super Bowl 53 in Atlanta\, GA\, and the Taste of the NFL in Atlanta\, GA \n \nGina and Greg Hollenbeck are heading to the Taste of the NFL in Atlanta\, GA \n \nJeff and Rhonda Meckstroth are heading to the 2019 NFL Pro Bowl in Orlando\, FL. \n \nThe survivors will have an opportunity to share their powerful stories with key individuals with influence from across the country. \n**The Challenge is over but the fundraising continues until the day after the Super Bowl\, February 4\, 2019 at 3amEST/12amPST.\n \nThe lung cancer survivors that raise over $5\,000 will be able to designated a beneficiary (Cancer Center or LC Organization) that will receive 80% of their raised funds (-fees) and the remaining 20% will support Team Draft’s mission to change the face of lung cancer. \nFounded by Draft and his late wife Keasha\, who died of lung cancer in 2011 at the age of 38\, Team Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding through its Campaign To Change The Face Of Lung Cancer\, which is committed to shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The centerpiece of Team Draft’s Campaign is its annual Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge. \nAs Draft explains\, “the Super Bowl Challenge gives us a unique opportunity to use the overwhelming media coverage surrounding the Super Bowl as a platform to raise critical public awareness about lung cancer on an international level.  With the game as a backdrop\, we can use each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of lung cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.”  And Team Draft’s efforts are paying off. \n“The Super Bowl Challenge achieves amazing things in terms of public awareness and changing perceptions about lung cancer\,” says Dr. Ross Camidge\, the Director of Thoracic Oncology at Colorado University Cancer Center\, the cancer center where two of last year’s Super Bowl Challenge winners were treated. \nIn addition to raising critical public awareness\, the Super Bowl Challenge also raises funds for lung cancer organizations and treatment centers across North America. \nOf this aspect of the Super Bowl Challenge\, Dr. Camidge says\, “you need somebody working on the national level. You need somebody working on the local level. Everybody wins.” \nFor the survivors who participate\, the Super Bowl Challenge is so much more than just a fundraiser. \n“Team Draft has really helped boost our family’s spirits during this challenging time\,” says Dr. Lucy Kalanithi. In 2015\, Lucy and her husband\, Dr. Paul Kalanithi\, won Team Draft’s inaugural Super Bowl Challenge and were able to join Team Draft in Phoenix\, Arizona for Super Bowl 49.  Paul went on to write the bestselling memoir When Breath Becomes Air — a powerful and moving chronicle of his life and lung cancer journey — before passing away at the age of 37. \n2016 Super Bowl Challenge winner\, Kim Ringen says\, “As a lung cancer survivor\, I would highly recommend to anybody to put your hat in the ring because it is so uplifting to be associated with a group of people that are coming together to make a difference.” \nTo learn more about Team Draft’s 2019   Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge\, visit https://www.crowdrise.com/o/en/campaign/2019superbowlchallenge \nSpecial thanks to NFL and all of our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible. \nAbout Team Draft \nTeam Draft\, an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation\, is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.”  Despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, Team Draft is out to change all that. SUMMARY:Tackling Cancer with Team Draft at the NFL Experience
DESCRIPTION:New York\, NY. Cancer survivors and caregivers from NYC will join Team Draft at the NFL Experience in Times Square. The group will have a chance to get a behind the scenes feel for the NFL. View Photos \nWhat: Tackling Cancer with Team Draft at the NFL Experience\n\nWho: Metro New York City Survivors and Caregivers\n\nWhen: October 31\, 2018 – 11am – 3pm\n\nWhere: NFL Experience in Times Square\, 20 Times Square – entrance between 47th & 48th street on 7th avenue\, New York\, NY 10036\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTACKLING CANCER   \nA Celebration of Survivors and Caregivers \nIn 2012\, Team Draft launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. Leveraging our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, we arranged to have lung cancer survivors attend games at NFL stadiums across the country during the last two months of the 2012-2013 season. By the time the initiative concluded at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii\, more than 30 lung cancer survivors representing 30 cancer centers and nearly every NFL team had participated. Given the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, we have expanded it beyond the NFL to the NBA\, the NHL and MLS—and to the NFL UK in London! Our Tackling Cancer initiative builds on the success of already established A Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, and celebrates all cancer survivors and caregivers\, highlighting the similar journeys for those battling the disease. \nWhat Is Our Tackling Cancer Initiative? \nWhile Team Draft’s primary focus has been lung cancer\, we recognize that all cancer survivors and caregivers are all on a similar journey\, fighting a similar battle.  In short\, we are all on the same team. \nOur goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and caregivers\, to spark discussion and the sharing of information between those battling different types of cancer\, and to raise awareness on a local and national level about the importance of having a solid cancer care TEAM for all cancers. \n \nWhat is Team Draft? \nTeam Draft is an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation created by nationally recognized health advocate and former 12 year NFL linebacker\, Chris Draft and his late wife\, Keasha during Keasha’s year-long battle with lung cancer. Their hope was that Keasha’s valiant fight to dance\, smile and live would give hope\, comfort and inspiration to the patients\, caregivers and healthcare providers who are battling the disease every day. \nWhile attending Clemson University\, Keasha was a member of the Rally Cat’s dance squad before graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation\, Keasha worked as an engineer while dancing for the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets before working in the pharmaceutical industry. She was an energetic\, vibrant young woman who had never smoked when she was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer in December 2010. At the time\, her only “symptom” was a slight shortness of breath a few days earlier. Despite the diagnosis and knowing the long odds they faced\, Keasha and Chris decided to fight back. On November 27\, 2011\, standing side-by-side\, they launched Team Draft at their wedding. One month later\, Keasha lost her courageous fight and died at the age of 38. \nTeam Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The fact is anybody can get lung cancer. Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked—including Keasha—are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. Team Draft is out to change all that by using the unique platform available to Chris as a former NFL player and nationally recognized community leader and health advocate to lead a National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer—a campaign that has taken us to more than 130 of the top cancer treatment and research centers in North America. \nAbout the Chris Draft Family Foundation and Team Draft \nThe Chris Draft Family Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to strengthening communities by empowering families to live healthy lifestyles.  The Foundation focuses on several primary initiatives with overarching themes that stress the importance of education\, healthy lifestyles\, character development\, personal responsibility\, self-discipline and physical fitness.  To learn more about the Foundation\, please visit www.chrisdraftfamilyfoundation.org. \nThrough its Team Draft initiative\, the Foundation is carrying on Keasha’s fight to tackle cancer by promoting cancer awareness\, research and scholarship.  Team Draft is dedicated to empowering people to live longer and live stronger by changing the face of lung cancer.  To learn more about Team Draft\, please visit www.teamdraft.org.

SUMMARY:Survivor at Every Stadium: Los Angeles Rams #CrucialCatch #AllCancers
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles\, CA. OC lung cancer survivor-adovcate Tabitha Paccione\, and her family\, represented Team Draft the LA Memorial Coliseum on Sunday. The group watched the LA Rams defeat the visiting Green Bay Packers with Team Draft co-founder and Rams Alum Chris Draft. Tabitha also join a large group of survivors (season ticket holders and ACS guests) that were recognized throughout the game as a part of the NFL Crucial Catch – Intercept Cancer initiative. View Photos \nIf you can’t laugh at cancer\, you’re in trouble. \nFortunately\, Tabitha Paccione\, a 36-year-old teacher with stage IV lung cancer\, has the most amazing medicine immediately to her right and immediately to her left. \n \nThat would be her son\, 13-year-old Dylan\, and her daughter\, Brooklyn\, a comedian and nurse rolled into the body of a nine-year-old. \n“I believe in being honest with them\,” Paccione explains as she makes cheese quesadillas for lunch. \nWith tears welling\, Paccione recalls the time before she was diagnosed with lung cancer when she started coughing so hard she had to pull to the side of the road. With her kids in the car\, her body fell apart and she vomited. \n“I had to wash my hands off in a sprinkler\,” Paccione recalls\, wiping away tears of embarrassment. \nBut instead of a silent sober moment at the kitchen table where Paccione and I talk\, gales of laughter from Dylan and Brooklyn wash away all traces of sadness. \nEven Mom’s tears instantly change from grief to glee. The memory of Mom with puke on her clothes and having to use a stranger’s sprinkler is just too funny for Paccione and kids. \n“We laugh about it now\,” Paccione says\, trying to suppress a giggle. “But it was scary then.” Read More… \nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor Series initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. SUMMARY:Survivor at Every College Stadium: Stanford Cardinal
DESCRIPTION:Stanford\, CA. Bay Area lung cancer survivor-advocate Don Stranathan will represent Team Draft at Stanford Stadium. Don will tailgate with our co-founder Chris Draft\, and other Stanford Alumni before watching the Stanford Cardinal take on the Washington State Cougars. View Photos \nThe bad news is that I have cancer. The good news is that cancer has taught me to live life to the fullest. I never allow cancer to define me. I rarely miss an opportunity to hike\, bike\, or do anything that strengthens my immune system and keeps me out in nature. \nIn October 2011 I met Penny Blume\, the love of my life\, on a lung cancer support community on Inspire. Penny left this earth on Jan. 21\, 2014 after battling small cell lung cancer for 32 months. Penny and I spent our time together traveling back and forth from New York to California. She passed at my home in Santa Rosa\, Calif.\, after trying one last clinical trial at Stanford Cancer Center. \nPenny and I turned to each other for emotional support to battle our cancers and fell in love. It was after a couple of months of texting and chatting on social media that we decided to meet. Penny flew to California for her first visit in January 2012\, and the rest is history. \nMy relationship with Penny also marked the beginning of my advocacy work for lung cancer. It started when a friend of ours asked us to post our story on a lung cancer survivors group on Facebook. I posted something\, and then Penny and I decided to repost it on Inspire\, since it was the site that brought us together. In September 2012 our story was shared by ABC News and Good Morning America. In the following weeks\, it was shared and tweeted all over the world… \nMy last promises to Penny were that I would continue to live life to the fullest and advocate for lung cancer research and awareness. One day at a time I try to keep those promises to her. \n– See more at: http://scopeblog.stanford.edu/2014/11/18/my-last-promises-to-her-advocate-for-lung-cancer-awareness-and-live-life-to-the-fullest/#sthash.nz4BlwDO.dpuf \n  \n \nI am a Stage 4 lung cancer survivor and advocate. This Saturday I will be representing the Chris Draft Family Foundation at the Stanford football game. I am involved with many organizations as a patient advocate\, but one of my favorite is putting a face on lung cancer at sporting events for Team Draft. \n  \nAbout the Chris Draft Family Foundation and Team Draft \nThe Chris Draft Family Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to strengthening communities by empowering families to live healthy lifestyles. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Survivor at Every Stadium: Arizona Cardinals
DESCRIPTION:Glendale\, AZ. Arizona lung cancer survivors Mary Ann Laverty\, Anne Bailey\, Yovana Portillo and Joanne Schlesinger joined Team Draft co-founder Chris Draft at State Farm Stadium on Thursday night. The group watched a Thursday Night Football match up between the Arizona Cardinals and the Denver Broncos. #4Ladies #changingthefaceoflungcancer #sidelinepasses  \nView Photos \nEleven and half months in from my diagnosis of NSCLC I have found a world of survivors. I am honestly humbled at kindness and compassion I see being shared. The online community which is slowly fueling me with feeling empowered is how I found Team Draft. This was my firsr opportunity to meet other survivors\, to be in company of these amazing women was an honor. Chris Draft reinforces what I partially know and what I know I want to learn. Research matters and spreading the word on LC. Make is personal. Being part of Team Draft and the Cardinals for Thursday night football exceeded expectations and was a great means to start thinking of a platform to share my story. I am humbled by the kindness that was shared. I hope to be take what this information to the advocate platform. Changing the face of lung cancer is real. Its all of us. #Research needed ~ Joanne Schlesinger \n \nI feel extremely blessed to have been granted the opportunity to attend a Thursday Night Football game with some of my Lung Cancer Sisters as guests of Christ Draft with #TeamDraft and we were graciously hosted by the Arizona Cardinals! This was a very exciting and truly a once in a lifetime experience! It was so neat to receive Pre-Game Sideline passes and to be so close to the players and watch them as they warmed up before the game! It was an honor to be able to represent the Lung Cancer Community from Arizona and to show the world what Lung Cancer looks like\, a Lung Cancer Survivor looks like me! Being a spectator at a nationally televised football game and being surrounded by everyday people\, was very impactful to me because for a few hours I was able to forget my diagnosis and simply enjoy and live in the present moment and feed off of the positive energy and atmosphere in the stadium! It goes on to show that by simply looking at our group\, no one would have guessed that each of us has been impacted by Lung Cancer. We all look like your average everyday people too! But it also proves that by simply being present and owning your story\, any setting can serve as an opportunity to share your story. Knowledge is power and no one knows my story better than I do! This is particularly valuable because at the end of the day Lung Cancer can affect anyone with lungs and it is crucial to have a conversation regarding this disease with everyone I encounter should the opportunity arise. It was so very humbling to be able to share this wonderful experience with my Lung Cancer Sisters and this is an amazing memory I will treasure forever! ~ Yovana Portillo \n \nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor Series initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. As a part of our International Campaign\, the games allow us to celebrate our survivors\, raise awareness\, and give hope to those battling the disease\, as well as shine a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nSpecial thanks to the Arizona Cardinals\, Luis Zendejas\, the NFL and all of our Team Draft supporters for helping make this event possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

We would appreciate to have participants of all ages. As well there will have to be at least three girls on each team. \nFor more information about the Tackling Lungs event: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/tackling-lungs-tickets-42648268118 \n \n

DESCRIPTION:View Photos  \nWe are so happy and thankful for the money we were able to raise through the Super Bowl Challenge! We are pumped to be going to the Super Bowl!! \nThe Super Bowl challenge is an amazing way to not only raise funds for lung cancer research but bring much-needed awareness to the disease. Getting to go to the super bowl is the cherry on top! We are incredibly excited for this opportunity and can’t thank everyone enough who helped us get here. ~  Matt Arensdorf  \nDenver\, CO. Lung cancer survivor Matt Arensdorf and\, his wife\, Jen are heading to Minnesota for Super Bowl LII on February 4\, 2018 and the 2018 Taste of the NFL in St. Paul\, Minnesota on February 3\, 2018. Matt earned a trip to the Super Bowl and the Taste of the NFL by being one for the top fundraisers in our 2018 Lung Cancer Super Bowl Challenge. Team Arensdorf will be able to continue raising funds for the Lung Cancer Colorado Fund at the University of Colorado until the day after the Super Bowl. \n \nLife couldn’t have been any better in early 2016. My wife\, Jen\, and I had just celebrated the birth of our daughter\, Grace. I had an amazing wife and a perfect little girl. To put a cherry on top the Denver Broncos had just won the super bowl. Jen and I\, like all new parents\, were navigating the uncharted waters of parenting. Trying to figure out all the little things like how do we get Grace to sleep through the night and is she eating enough? We were also making plans for our future with our new baby. Picking out a daycare\, setting up her college fund\, determining how may siblings she’d have and how close in age we wanted them to be. Then all those questions and plans were put on hold. ~ Read more about Matt Arensdorf  \nFounded by Draft and his late wife Keasha\, who died of lung cancer in 2011 at the age of 38\, Team Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding through its Campaign To Change The Face Of Lung Cancer\, which is committed to shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The centerpiece of Team Draft’s Campaign is its annual Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge. Last year\, participants who raised more than $1\,000< during the Super Bowl Challenge were able to commit 50% of the funds they raised to a lung cancer organization or cancer center of their choice. \nThanks to the overwhelming success of our annual Super Bowl Challenge\, Team Draft is maintaining its commit to 50% if the survivors raise over $1\,000\, but if they raise over $5\,000\, their designated beneficiary will receive 80% with the remaining 20% going to support Team Draft’s mission to change the face of lung cancer. \n \nOf this aspect of the Super Bowl Challenge\, Dr. Camidge says\, “you need somebody working on the national level. SUMMARY:Linda Wortman #SuperBowlBound Reception at Mayo Clinic
DESCRIPTION:View Photos \nRochester\, MN. Our co-founder\, Chris Draft\, traveled to Rochester\, MN to congratulate Mayo Clinic lung cancer survivor Linda Wortman on her fundraising efforts in Team Draft’s 2018 Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge that earned her a trip to the Taste of the NFL and Super Bowl 52. Linda’s efforts were celebrated at a reception hosted by The Mayo Clinic Thoracic Team at Dooley’s Pub in Rochester\, MN. \n \nThis is a dream come true.  For the past 10 years\, it has been my goal to raise awareness of lung cancer.  And now\, by winning the Team Draft Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge\, I feel it is possible!!  We can provide much needed money for lung cancer research at Mayo Clinic and save more lungs and more lives! ~Linda Wortman \nHere’s Linda’s story\, in her own words:  “In 2008\, I received a phone call that changed the course of my life.  For 35 years\, I worked as a flight attendant.  I was preparing to depart from Minneapolis for Amsterdam when my physician\, whom I had seen just 2 days before for my annual physical\, called and requested that I return to Mayo Clinic immediately because of something he saw on my CT scan. \nSo I returned to Mayo. Sitting in his office looking at x-ray images of my lungs\, time froze as my physician said\, ‘You have lung cancer.’ I snapped at him: “Doctor\, you have the wrong person!  I have never smoked!”  That was the day I realized anyone with lungs can get lung cancer.” \nAfter successful surgery at Mayo Clinic\, and with the support of her loving husband\, Jerry\, Linda battled through\, and is now on a mission to break the stereotype that lung cancer is only for smokers.  Linda set a goal to raise awareness about lung cancer and to share with people around the world that there is quality of life after a cancer diagnosis.  Since 2012\, and with most of her left lung missing\, Linda completed a 5K race in all 50 states\, a 10K race on four continents\, and in August of 2016\, she climbed to the summit of Kilimanjaro\, the largest mountain in Africa\, and the fourth tallest peak in the world. \nIn 2014\, Linda and Jerry co-founded the non-profit organization Wortman Lung Cancer   Foundation.  Through this foundation\, the Wortmans host Running Lungs Run/Walk events and the #First2Burst Lung Challenge to raise desperately-needed funds for lung cancer research. \nLinda has always been an example of her favorite saying\, “If you can imagine it\, you can achieve it; if you can dream it\, you can become it.” Linda dreamed of being one of Team Draft’s 2018 Lung Cancer Survivor Super Bowl Challenge winners and now she is.  This will enable her to continue spreading her positive message and raising funds to save lungs and lives through research. \nJanuary 11\, 2018 marks the 10-year anniversary of my lung cancer surgery and of being a survivor.  I am honored to be a 2018 Super Bowl Challenge winner and I want to be a strong advocate and positive presence representing all survivors throughout the remaining weeks of the Challenge.  I’m looking forward to participating in a number of events during Super Bowl week\, especially the Team Draft Family Foundation Survivors’ dinner.  Please join me and survivors from around Minnesota as we band together to blow lung cancer away!! ~ Linda

SUMMARY:Anne Phillips Attended the College Football National Championship
DESCRIPTION:View Photos \nIt’s hard to know to what to say about all this other than we are just so excited! With the short timeline between the end of the contest and the national championships we haven’t had much time to process. Watching that Rose Bowl game and knowing we were going to see the winner play live was great. And Georgia vs. Alabama? What a match up! ~ Anne Phillips  \nAtlanta\, GA. Denver\, CO lung cancer survivor Anne Phillips and\, her husband\, Ryan attended the 2018 College Football National Championship in Atlanta\, GA on January 8\, 2018.  Anne and Ryan watched the University of Alabama Crimson Tide defeat the University of Georgia Bulldogs in overtime at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. \nAs an avid college football fan there is no other sporting event I would rather attend than the National Championship game. And winning a trip to the game by raising money for IASLC makes the event much more meaningful. Every dollar spent on lung cancer research extends peoples’s lives. My wife and I are here today because of this research\, and I am extremely proud of my wife for advancing the cause and in her bravery in living with lung cancer. ~ Ryan Phillips \nAnne earned a trip to the National Championship by being the fourth highest fundraiser in the 2018 Lung Cancer Survivor Super Bowl Challenge. Team SuperAnne will be able to continue to raise funds for the IASLC (International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer) until February 5\, 2018. \n \n \nIn May of 2015\, I had a seizure and collapsed one morning before taking my young children to school. Within 24 hours\, the doctors suspected I had lung cancer. There was a tumor in the upper lobe of my left lung and multiple metastasis in my brain.  Two days later I had brain surgery to remove the largest brain tumor\, the one that caused the seizure\, and the oncologist sent material from the tumor to be genomically tested. Tumor testing showed that I had an EGFR mutation which could be treated with a targeted-therapy drug called Tarceva. The drug worked well for almost 2 years before my cancer progressed and metastasized to a lymph node. Fortunately\, a new therapy that targeted both mutations had recently been developed\, and I was able to switch to Tagrisso earlier this year. \nPeople frequently think that I am “cured” because I don’t look like I have cancer. The reality is that I have cancer now and I always will. ~ Read more about Anne Phillips \nFounded by Draft and his late wife Keasha\, who died of lung cancer in 2011 at the age of 38\, Team Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding through its Campaign To Change The Face Of Lung Cancer\, which is committed to shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The centerpiece of Team Draft’s Campaign is its annual Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge. \n2016 Super Bowl Challenge winner\, Kim Ringen says\, “As a lung cancer survivor\, I would highly recommend to anybody to put your hat in the ring because it is so uplifting to be associated with a group of people that are coming together to make a difference.” \nTo learn more about Team Draft’s 2018 Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge\, visit https://www.crowdrise.com/2018SuperBowlChallenge \nSpecial thanks to NFL\, Astra Zeneca\, and all of our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible. \nAbout Team Draft\nTeam Draft\, an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation\, is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.”  Despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, Team Draft is out to change all that. Sign up now! \nTeam Brausen \nMy name is Gary Brausen and I am honored and excited to represent A Breath of Hope Lung Foundation (ABOHLF) and Team Draft in the 2018 Super Bowl Challenge.  I proudly and currently serve on the board of directors and medical research team for ABOHLF\, a Minnesota based organization dedicated to lung cancer.  Our lofty but achievable fundraiser goal of $20\,000.00 will benefit both organizations with 80% of the dollars going to ABOHLF once $5000 is reached and 20% benefitting the Chris Draft Family Foundation.  The dollars will be used to fund cutting edge cures for lung cancer\, to raise awareness and to support patients and families. \nHelping me with this event is Team Brausen\, a forceful and impactful group of friends\, family and colleagues who supported me\, my wife Rosey and two boys Bennett and Alec as we navigated through a stage 3B lung cancer diagnosis in 2011.Our 2018 Super Bowl Challenge centers around a single word\, “Hope”\, something all of us could use a lot more of these days. Here is our story. \nIn late November of 2010\, I was playing hockey three mornings a week\, coaching my son’s hockey team and was arguably in the best physical condition of my life. I had just turned 50 and was feeling fantastic. I prided myself on getting enough rest\, watching what I ate and getting some form of exercise every day. I was the poster child as to how to live a healthy life. I also never smoked. NEVER. \nThen it all started. I first noticed a dry cough while yelling at our hockey practices. What followed was rapid and unexplained weight loss and a significant degradation in my strength and energy. After stepping down as hockey coach and putting off necessary business trips\, I decided to put my fear aside and figure out what was going on. After several appointments with primary care physicians\, multiple courses of antibiotics and worsening symptoms\, I had enough and demanded a chest x-ray. \nOn March 15\, 2011\, I received the phone call that changed my life forever. The voice on the other end was my pulmonologist and the first thing he said to me was\, “I am sorry Mr. Brausen\, you have lung cancer.” I could not believe that me\, a non-smoker\, an athlete and a hockey player for 40+ years could have lung cancer. At that time\, I was like most other people in thinking that lung cancer only affected smokers. How very wrong I was. \nFollow on scans and biopsies indicated that I was stage 3B and that the cancer was aggressive but confined to my left lung. On April 7th 2011\, I had the diseased lung removed and we immediately asked\, “Did you get it all?” The surgeon said he could not\, that the surgical margins were positive and that the cancer had invaded my vascular spaces. I was tested for all of the genetic markers at the time and did not qualify for any of them. My oncologist devised a “kitchen sink” treatment plan consisting of chemotherapy and radiation with the purpose of extending my life. There was no plan B in case the treatment did not work. No more bullets in the gun. \nThree different oncologists considered my case terminal and this dismal prognosis was communicated to my family and friends. Doctors asked me questions such as\, “How do you plan to spend your final days?”\, “Are your affairs in order?”\, “Have you taken a recent family photo?” I was told that I most likely had no more than a year to live\, two at the very most. Unbeknownst to me\, my best friend worked on his eulogy for my funeral and planned a golf outing that was meant to be one last hurrah for me. \nMy treatment concluded in October of 2011\, have been cancer free for the 6 ½ years since my surgery and considered cured. Yes\, by the sheer grace of God and with the help of some of the very best cancer practitioners in the world\, cancer did not win. \nLung cancer 5 year survival rate has been stuck at around 17% for far too long\, claims the lives of more than 160\,000 Americans each year and is more deadly than breast\, colon\, prostate and kidney cancers COMBINED. Despite these depressing statistics\, there is hope on the horizon for this disease\, hope in the form of genetically targeted and immunotherapies\, hope in the form of earlier detection and hope in the form of increased awareness in the general public and media. There is certainly much more to be done\, we all know that\, but the truth is that there is more hope today than ever before for lung cancer patients and I believe that we are the verge of something very significant. \nPlease join Team Brausen\, A Breath of Hope Lung Foundation and Team Draft in our 2018 Super Bowl Challenge to raise research dollars\, awareness and ultimately hope for all present and future lung cancer patients. \nSpecial thanks to the A Breath of Hope Foundation\, Minnesota Vikings\, Chicago Bears\, NFL and all of our Team Draft supporters for helping make this event possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:Survivor at Every Stadium: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
DESCRIPTION:View Photos \nTampa\, FL. Lung cancer survivors Carol Scott\, Edward Cutler and Melissa Crouse\, and Tampa lung cancer Advocate Ros Miller represented Team Draft at Raymond James Stadium tonight. The group watched the Tampa Bay Buccaneers lose a close game to the Atlanta Falcons during Monday Night Football. \nOn Monday morning\, Moffitt Cancer Center lung cancer survivor Carol Scott and Edward Culter and our co-founder Chris Draft shot an interview with ABC Tampa News Anchor Laura Harris. Both survivors shared their journeys with lung cancer and their clinical trials at Moffitt Cancer Center. The interview will air at 4pm on ABC Tampa’s The Now. \n \nIt’s wonderful to see people such as you\, who are so passionate in their mission to help fund the necessary research to ultimately eradicate lung cancer. Showing the world that a lung cancer diagnosis is no longer a short term death sentence because of the findings of the research is the key to increasing the funding for continued research\, from both governmental units and from corporate and individuals. \n\nI will continue my efforts\, especially in advocating for Moffitt with our Florida legislature and with my friends and clients. I know I need to expand beyond just Moffitt and I will try to get involved to the extent possible with other lung cancer research efforts. ~ Edward Cutler\n\nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor Series initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer.
