The bags will include handwritten messages to family members and friends who have battled cancer. \n  \nDraft was an NFL linebacker for 13 seasons\, playing for the Chicago Bears\, San Francisco 49ers\, Atlanta Falcons\, Carolina Panthers\, St. Louis Rams and Buffalo Bills. He was also a caregiver to his wife\, Keasha\, who lost her battle to lung cancer just a month after their wedding in 2011. The ceremony is part of the #OneDegree campaign\, which ACS CAN launched with Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C) earlier this year to underscore the fact that we all know someone with cancer – a relative\, a friend\, a co-worker – and many of us have faced the disease ourselves. As a relatively young healthy woman who worked out every day\, I was shocked. I was in good shape and I never\, ever smoked. I’ve survived four recurrences\, dealt with (and continue to deal with) metastases\, countless chemotherapy treatments\, a course of radiation and several treatment related life threatening issues. It is a roller coaster ride\, but it’s my reality. \nI am a stage IV lung cancer patient\, but I continue to work as a teacher and try to live each day to the fullest. I\’ve let go of a lot of emotional baggage and become a lot more tolerant of things that used to bother me because I now realize how silly it is to waste time on negativity. I adore my family and treasure the times we are together. In many ways\, dealing with this monster has made a positive impact on my life. I am very fortunate to have what I consider the best doctors caring for me. Instead of focusing on the numerous pesky side effects from chemo\, I choose to be grateful that I am still here and am able to enjoy life…..particularly the fact that I still feel productive. Sarah is the founder of the Vada Murray Cancer Fund that funds research at the University of Michigan Cancer Center.\n \nVada Murray was an athlete all his life. He grew up in Cincinnati\, Ohio playing every sport he could. After graduating From Cincinnati Moeller High School\, he went on to play defensive back under Bo Schembechler for the University of Michigan from 1986-1990 and went to 3 Rose Bowls during this time at Michigan.\n\n \nVada turned down an opportunity to play for the NFL\, choosing instead to dedicate his life to public service by becoming a police officer for the Ann Arbor Police Department. He proudly served the city and the citizens of the Ann Arbor area for 21 years.\n\nVada married his wife Sarah in 2001. Together they had two beautiful and talented daughters. They enjoyed a rigorous health and fitness regimen. \n\n\nLate in 2008\, Vada was unexpectedly diagnosed with advanced lung cancer at the age of 41. Neither Vada nor his parents ever smoked. He endured months of chemotherapy and physical and emotional pain but remained determined to win the battle against this unexpected and unfair opponent. Jackie will watch the Atlanta Falcons take on the visiting Washington Redskins with Falcons Alumni. #RiseUp #50seasons \nAccording to Jackie\, Tuesday\, August 2\, 2005\, at the age of 40 years and in seemingly excellent health\, an evening commuter came crashing into my SUV. I quickly phoned 911. Within moments there were lights and sirens coming from every direction. \nThe paramedics gently placed me onto a straight board and took me to the local hospital where I underwent a variety of tests to verify the extent of my injuries. By the time the tests were completed the ER room I had been assigned to was filled with my family and our family doctor\, Dr. Ayisha Gani. After a few hours of x-rays and tests the ER doctor told me he had “…good news and bad news”. He went on to say with surprise\, “The good news is that there are no injuries\, no fractures\, nothing whatsoever as a result of the car accident.” Everyone was relieved\, for a moment. “The bad news is there is something in your lower right lobe the size of my fist; we need to do some tests…” Dr. Gani\, my personal physician explained to me that she was admitting me for additional tests which would more than likely involve a biopsy the following day. \nThe next day I had a biopsy performed and remained in the hospital while other family members made their way to Georgia. It was Thursday afternoon that Dr. Gani came to my hospital room with all of my family in the room and told me the news and said\, “The biopsy results are in; there is a tumor growing in the lower right lobe; it has to come out right away\, you have lung cancer.” I was shocked to hear this and asked if this was accurate. I asked her how this could have happened. Me? I never smoked and neither did my parents. How could I get lung cancer? I was then told it was the fastest growing type of cancer cell\, Adenocarcenoma. I had lung cancer. I never smoked and neither did my parents. \nLater that evening my three sons were brought to my hospital room. They were 12\, 14 & 16 years old at the time. I proceeded to remind them of the phrase they had heard throughout their life\, “God works in mysterious ways”. As I reminded them of this phrase I repeated for them the sequenceof events that had played out over the past two days. I wanted to protect them from any unknown fears that the word “cancer” is typically associated with. As I’ve spoken with Chris over the past week and learned more about Team Draft\, it is evident his mission is to reduce the stigma of lung cancer and increase funding for the leading cancer killer by putting faces to the disease. I’m excited at this opportunity to provide hope to other survivors and to reduce the stigma of the disease by sharing my story. I have first hand experience at the advancements in treatment that have occurred over the past 15 years. At the age of 48 I am a two time lung cancer survivor. I was 31 years old when I was first diagnosed. I had a lobectomy by a surgical procedure called a Thoracotomy. This is one of the most painful surgeries to heal from. In November of 2013 I was once again diagnosed with lung cancer. Thoracic surgery has come a long way since my first diagnosis. I had another lobectomy\, this time through a less invasive procedure called VATS. I recovered much quicker and it was less painful. It made a huge difference in my recovery. \n\nAdvocacy efforts over the past years finally seem to making some progress. In April of 2015 I traveled to Washington D.C. to attend a lung cancer summit organized by the Lung Cancer Alliance. With the LCA\, I visited the offices of my legislators. During our visit with Congressman Rick Nolan\, he told us he was going to form a Lung Cancer Caucus. This past August\, it came to fruition. More people die from lung cancer than all the other cancers combined. Yet\, when you look at the funding for research\, lung cancer is the least funded of all cancers. Why is the most deadliest type of cancer the least funded? \n\nFor far too many years\, lung cancer has been associated with smoking. Growing up\, I remember hearing about “The Great American Smoke Out” that takes place in November\, insinuating that you have to smoke to get lung cancer. That is false. All it takes to get lung cancer is lungs. Yes\, lungs. We all have them\, we all need them\, we are all susceptible to lung cancer. \n\nSixty percent of all new lung cancer diagnoses are among people who have never smoked or who are former smokers. \n\nOne in 14 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer. That statistic is staggering. Even more staggering is the lack of funding for lung cancer research. \n\nThere is a need for early screenings. Does that sound familiar? That is key for all cancers. However\, the most deadliest type of cancer\, lung cancer\, is the furthest behind in research. The majority of lung cancer patients are stage four. Lung cancer survivor-advocates Alisha Brenes and Barbara Kotler represented Team Draft at the Barclays Center on Thursday night. \n\nMy name is Alisa Brenes and I am a lung cancer survivor. I guess you can say my lung cancer journey started before I was born. My mom\, my maternal grandfather and most of his siblings all died of lung cancer. \n\nI was diagnosed with Stage 3 lung cancer at 43 years of age\, just a few months after my mom passed away of lung cancer. It still boggles my mind to this day that I was taking care of my mother during her last days while at the same time the same tumor was growing in my lung. \n\nI had a third of my lung removed and followed up with chemotherapy. I was a single mother of 10 year old twin boys at the time. They were in elementary school and I didn’t even know if I would be there for their grade school graduation. Thanks to God and the Universe and my amazing doctors\, I lived to see my twins graduate from college. My next goal is to live to see them employed 🙂 \n\nI am committed to spreading awareness and supporting others as a Lifeline Support Mentor\, helping newly diagnosed patients. I also sit on the Committee Board of the Breathe Deep NYC yearly Walk For A Cure and we have raised over $500\,000 for lung cancer research. Sally Kingsbury wrote the eulogy herself as she prepared to die from sarcoma\, a form of lung cancer\, in 2005. \n\nKingsbury admires his mom for displaying grace in using the eulogy to honor all of the people in her life as it drew to an end. He recites the eulogy’s opening line from memory: “It’s been one hell of a party\, Woodrow.” She cribbed that from The Lonesome Dove\, her favorite show. In life and in death\, it was her motto. \n\nKingsbury’s mom and dad\, the two biggest influences in his life\, were opposites. His dad\, Tim\, is a former high school football coach\, an alpha male Vietnam veteran. His mom was a free spirit with a permanent smile who delighted in being loud and boisterous and embarrassing her two boys (Kliff has an older brother\, Klint). \n\nSo idyllic was Kingsbury’s upbringing in New Braunfels\, Texas\, that he says\, “I have no excuse to ever do anything but live an amazing life considering the way I was raised.”\n\nHe briefly left the New York Jets to be with her in her last days. “She was really the only person I ever showed weakness to\,” he says. He talked to her about girl problems\, confidence issues\, whatever troubled him\, and she always listened.\n\n“I still talk to her a bunch\,” he says. “When I’m at home or before games\, I just kind of talk to her on my own.”\n\nSeeing her stay strong as she succumbed to the sarcoma\, and the loving way his dad took care of her\, changed Kingsbury.\n\n“I stopped worrying about things as much\, what people thought. Just cut loose. Watching her go through that\, how she handled it\, I’ll never have a bad day after that\,” he says. “To her last dying breath\, it was about\, ‘Hey\, make sure your dad’s OK\, make sure you’re OK. Are you going to be OK? Is your brother going to be OK?’ Not once was it about her. He has invited my husband John and I to attend Tuesday’s Avalanche game as a guest of TeamDraft. Something that we are truly looking forward to! I have had lung cancer for almost three years now. My treatments included eight hours of surgery\, 40 sessions of radiation\, and three courses of chemotherapy. The pain became so unmanageable that I have no recollection of last April! Dr. Kono persevered\, however and started me on Opdivo as soon as it was approved by the FDA. Since then my life has completely turned around!! The tumors have stabilized and my pain is managed with minimal drug therapy. John and I are enjoying traveling again including a vacation in Mexico. Only through these efforts and dedicated doctors like Dr. Kono will we find a cure for this horrible disease. ~ Kim Aldridge\n\n\nThe survivors watched the Colorado Avalanche defeat the Calgary Flames 6-3.\n\nI was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in April 2014 and given 1 year to live. I was not a smoker and had been participating in triathlons in the years before my diagnosis. This life changing news caused a pivot in my focus but not a change in my positive outlook.\n\nPrior to my diagnosis\, I was a Senior Vice President of Technology Healthcare firm. After my diagnosis\, i took a leave of absence from work and focused on my treatment. I went through Platinum Chemo\, had radiation treatments on my brain and hoped for the best I wanted to make the most out of the time I have left. Dr Kono and Dr Doebele suggested a test by Foundations Medicine that might help with further treatments. I sent a tumor sample to Foundations Medicine to conduct a Genomic Profile and found out I was ALK positive. I just started Crizotinib and am hoping it buys me more time. Since my diagnosis I entered and MBA program that will complete in August and hope to continue skiing this season (last year I got 15 days in hoping for more this year!). Leah Bochnicek takes on many roles – mother\, wife\, co-worker\, and cancer patient.\n\n“It doesn’t matter how healthy you think you are\, your body is a crazy thing\,” Bochnicek said.\n\nShe developed an audible wheeze in her throat last summer\, which turned into a persistent cough. A chest X-ray revealed she had pneumonia\, even though doctors couldn’t hear it with a stethoscope.\n\n“And the reason they couldn’t hear it was because I had a tumor above the pneumonia that was blocking it off\,” she said.\n\nIn addition to the tumor\, surgery revealed spots on the exterior of her lung and nodules on the chest wall. Doctors diagnosed her with adenocarcinoma. Bochnicek said she has never smoked a day in her life.\n\n“No one can explain to me why I got lung cancer. What is it? They watched the Carolina Hurricanes defeat the Ottawa Senators. #HockeyFightsCancer #LCAM15 \n\n\nDusty Joy Donaldson\n\nIn September 2005\, at the age of 51\, Dusty Donaldson was diagnosed with lung cancer. It was then she learned the eye-opening facts about this disease and became a passionate advocate for lung cancer awareness\, research and early detection. For the first few years after her diagnosis\, Dusty volunteered with several nonprofits\, including the American Cancer Society\, National Lung Cancer Partnership\, Lung Cancer Alliance and others before founding a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in March 2010. The mission of the Dusty Joy Foundation is advancing lung cancer awareness\, early detection and compassion for people impacted by lung cancer. Dusty enjoys collaborating with other nonprofits focused on lung cancer advocacy\, including one of her favorites\, the Chris Draft Family Foundation. Dusty serves as co-leader of the Lung Cancer Action Network (LungCAN)\, a coalition of all the U.S.-based nonprofits dedicated to lung cancer.\n\nPrior to her diagnosis\, Dusty was a former journalist and public relations professional. She earned a BA in journalism from Norfolk State University and an MA in journalism from Regent University. She worked as a writer and editor before entering the field of public relations where she worked for Womble Carlyle and Wake Forest University. Dusty also earned a nonprofit management certificate from Duke University. She now uses her journalism and public relations skills to raise awareness about the number one cancer killer.\n\nTomma Hargraves\n\n Eight years after her diagnosis\, lung cancer survivor Tomma Hargraves is training to become a lay navigator with UNC Lineberger\, giving back to the hospital that she credits with saving her life.\n\nIn October of 2006\, Tomma Hargraves found a small lump in her neck. Although she felt very healthy\, she went to her doctor to have the lump checked out. A few days later\, she received a diagnosis that shocked her: Stage 3B non-small cell lung cancer. The tumor was in the right lobe of her lungs\, and the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes on the left side of her neck.\n\n“I wish I had known that non-smokers and people who had quit long ago could get lung cancer\,” says Hargraves. When did little girls become the face of lung cancer? according to Gabby Wilson\, at the ripe old age of 6\, when she lost a lung to cancer.\n\nEven as an oncology nurse\, I struggle to comprehend a child battling cancer but I find it especially difficult to comprehend a child fighting lung cancer but that is exactly what Gabby did and with such grace.\n\nIn 2007\, Gabby was diagnosed with a rare form of lung cancer. I have advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)\, Adenocarcinoma. My kids are 8 and 11. I’ve never smoked or lived or worked near smokers. In fact\, I’m something of a health nut and I was seemingly very fit (I taught indoor cycle & other fitness classes up until I got too sick in mid-December 2013). They watched a Thursday Night Football match up between the New York Jets and the Buffalo Bills. #Tacklinglungcancer #LCAM15\n\n\nJohanna Medina\n\nAt age 39\, she had a finding on her chest X-ray and CT that many pulmonologists would have just assumed to be infectious in a non-smoker her age. Her pulmonologist\, Ben Harvey\, stuck with it though and eventually diagnosed her with lung cancer. Dr. Stiles performed what should be a curative resection on her two years ago and she has been disease free since. Johanna is a New York native and a mother of two young kids.\n\nDr. Brendon Stiles\n\nAs a thoracic surgeon at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City\, James Wood High School graduate Dr. Brendon Stiles saves patients from the same disease that claimed the life of his father\, former Frederick County Board of Supervisors Chairman Kenneth “Kenny” Stiles.\n\nIt has been 10 years and a couple of weeks since Stiles\, a dairy farmer in Clear Brook\, died of lung cancer at age 61. His son was at Winchester Medical Center on Wednesday afternoon giving a presentation about the latest developments in treating the deadly disease.\n\nA 1990 graduate of James Wood\, Stiles initially thought he’d be a veterinarian.\n\n“I grew up on a farm\, and I liked animals\, but then I realized I liked people more than animals\,” he said during an interview Wednesday morning.\n\nStiles’s twin brother\, Ryan\, is a lawyer in Wichita\, Kan. His mother\, Tricia\, is a legislative assistant for 27th District state Sen. Jill Vogel\,R-Upperville. After going to college and medical school at the University of Virginia\, Stiles completed a general surgery residency in Charlottesville as well. While a resident\, he took time out to do scientific research at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NewYork. Stiles\, 42\, then did a cardiothoracic residency at Weill Cornell\, NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Sloan Kettering. He has stayed on at Weill Cornell\, and in addition to being a thoracic surgeon\, he’s an associate professor\, and does clinical and basic science research.\n\n“Most of my practice is lung cancer\,” Stiles said. “I was sort of already on that path when [my father] got diagnosed\, but obviously\, that’s strengthened my resolve to take care of lung cancer patients. “It’s made a tremendous difference. The good news is that cancer has taught me to live life to the fullest. I never allow cancer to define me. I rarely miss an opportunity to hike\, bike\, or do anything that strengthens my immune system and keeps me out in nature.\n\nIn October 2011 I met Penny Blume\, the love of my life\, on a lung cancer support community on Inspire. Penny left this earth on Jan. 21\, 2014 after battling small cell lung cancer for 32 months. Penny and I spent our time together traveling back and forth from New York to California. She passed at my home in Santa Rosa\, Calif.\, after trying one last clinical trial at Stanford Cancer Center.\n\nPenny and I turned to each other for emotional support to battle our cancers and fell in love. It was after a couple of months of texting and chatting on social media that we decided to meet. Penny flew to California for her first visit in January 2012\, and the rest is history.\n\nMy relationship with Penny also marked the beginning of my advocacy work for lung cancer. It started when a friend of ours asked us to post our story on a lung cancer survivors group on Facebook. I posted something\, and then Penny and I decided to repost it on Inspire\, since it was the site that brought us together. In September 2012 our story was shared by ABC News and Good Morning America. In the following weeks\, it was shared and tweeted all over the world…\n\nMy last promises to Penny were that I would continue to live life to the fullest and advocate for lung cancer research and awareness.
