Prior to going to VCU Cancer Center\, he was told surgery would likely not help\, but he ended up having a successful surgery and is currently enrolled in a clinical trial and doing well. Luther was treated at VCU Cancer Center in 2009 by the Radiation Oncology team. \nAt VCU Massey Cancer Center\, patients are treated by multidisciplinary teams\, which consist of a variety of cancer specialists across multiple disciplines. We cannot stop thinking of a 35-year-old\, who runs marathons\, eats broccoli\, and has never took a swig of a cigarette only to find out she has lung cancer. “There are no why did this happen\,” she said. She was married for what seemed like minutes before the vow of in sickness and in health soared to the top of the medical charts. A lingering cough and her husband chased her to the doctor\, who said\, cancer chased to her lymph nodes and liver. “Which made it stage four\, as bad as it gets\,” said Barlow. Then her family\, the Orioles. This year of the birds\, became the year of the Barlow – giving her hope. “Everybody rallied\, incredible\,” she said. If the Orioles can show us a miracle why can’t we see a miracle in Monica. So tomorrow will come and she’ll take a pill that wasn’t available to her two years ago. That is another sign. He is also celebrating the birth of a new baby. \nThis year\, the Giants\, like many other N.F.L. teams\, have not gone away to a relatively remote location in New York\, Connecticut\, Vermont or Oregon\, as they had for nearly 80 years. The Giants instead chose to stay in the Meadowlands\, where several years ago\, they built a state-of-the-art practice facility with offices\, meeting and locker rooms\, multiple grass fields and a vast indoor field house. The players are housed in a swanky hotel overlooking the Giants’ compound. \nAbraham represents hope for the future as a lung cancer survivor. Since the age of 15\, Abraham has battled lung cancer. In one approach\, a specific type of immune stimulating cell\, called a dendritic cell\, is administered to patients as a vaccine. In another approach\, experimental medications are given to patients in a manner that increases the number and function of their own dendritic cells. Alternatively\, a gene therapy vaccine has been developed in which patients are immunized\, like getting a tetanus or flu shot\, so that they develop immunity to their cancer. UCLA is an important basic research center for dendritic cell and gene immunotherapy. Here is her story in her own words: \nAt 47\, the news that I had an inoperable and\, according to the medical community\, incurable cancer was devastating. As soon as my initial shock and depression could be forced aside\, I decide that I would beat this disease. I would be the miracle patient\, and I vowed to do everything within my power to fight for my life. I did extensive research in both western and holistic medicine. I selected an oncologist and began treatment at Northwestern with a daily oral chemo drug. At the same time\, I volunteered to be part of a test group for a new experimental drug. At home\, I purged my life of all carcinogenic chemicals\, unnecessary dyes\, fragrances and additives. I took steps to limit my exposure to unnecessary radiation. I overhauled my diet\, completely eliminating sugar\, meats and dairy\, and moved to a primarily plant-based diet with an occasional fish. My oncologist thought all of these steps\, especially my new diet\, were unnecessary and possibly harmful\, but when I returned for my first follow up CT Scan 6 weeks later\, my tumors had shrunk by 30%–70%. Team Draft helped our littlest fighter\, Kyssi Andrews celebrate her 5th birthday with the Houston Texans. The Texans are no stranger to Lung Cancer. Jonathan Joseph\, Cornerback for the Houston Texans\, as well as his family is waging their own battle against the disease. Joseph’s father is currently battling lung cancer. \n Khyrstin (Kyssi) Andrews is a very cheerful and energetic [5] year old who resides in Houston\, TX and was born on October 14\, 2008. \nKhyrstin had NO prior symptoms or pain. She was going to daycare everyday\, playing with her friends and being a perfectly normal 3 year old little girl (so we thought). On 5/1/2012 she started urinating blood. Her aunt and a very dear family friend rushed her to the emergency room where she was diagnosed with stage 2 phase 3 Wilm’s Tumor (kidney cancer) and then she was transferred immediately to another local hospital via ambulance for further diagnosis and treatment. Kyssi had 2 major surgeries on 5/4/2012. The 1st surgery was performed to remove her right kidney and the cantaloupe sized cancerous tumor and the 2nd surgery was given to place a portal catheter (port) above her heart in order for her to have her chemotherapy treatments\, receive medications\, blood and platelets when/if needed. \nShortly after surgery was performed\, she started a very aggressive/extensive radiation and chemotherapy treatment which consists of 4 different chemo drugs. She has had non-stop chemo treatments weekly since her treatments began in May. The last of her treatments were in November of 2012 and she was considered in remission on November 27\, 2012 (such a GREAT day). \nOn March 1\, 2013\, Kyssi went back to the hospital for what we though would’ve been only her 3 month checkup and scans\, not knowing that we’d return home with our lives and hearts changed yet “AGAIN”. She was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer (in both lungs) and was given less than a 50% chance of survival. That was the “report of the doctors”….we’re waiting on the “report of the Lord”. Every since that day….life has been ever so different for us. She is now on totally different chemotherapy medications that are so much more stronger than before\, and it keeps her a lot more sick. Kyssi has had multiple blood and platelet transfusions\, MORE frequent hospital stays\, constant abdominal pain\, nausea\, vomiting\, loss of appetite\, loss of sleep and also the loss of her hair for the 2nd time due to treatments.
