SUMMARY:Mayo Clinic Lung SPORE Retreat
DESCRIPTION:Rochester\, MN. Team Draft is off to the Mayo Clinic to participate in a retreat for Patient Advocates as a part of the highly competitive NCI Lung SPORE grant that the National Cancer Institute funds every year to select cancer institutes. \n  \nThe National Cancer Institute (NCI) established the Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) in 1992 to promote interdisciplinary research and to help basic research findings move quickly from the laboratory to the patient. To earn a highly competitive NCI SPORE grant\, institutions must demonstrate a high degree of collaboration between first-rate scientists and clinicians and show excellence in translational research projects. \n  \nThe Mayo Clinic Cancer Center’s SPOREs are structurally based on the close interaction and collaboration of clinical department members who work with patients in each of the disease areas\, as well as researchers and physicians who specialize in biochemistry and molecular biology\, immunology\, pharmacology\, laboratory medicine and pathology\, and health sciences research. \n  \nThe objective of the Cancer Center SPOREs is to enhance understanding of the biology of the specific cancers each program addresses and to translate this information into clinical application. This objective is accomplished by coordinating interdependent\, cooperative research projects within the SPOREs. The Cancer Center SPOREs also offer unique opportunities for career development for young researchers\, with a special program for researchers to explore innovative ideas that have untapped potential. \n  \nTeam Draft’s Co- Founder and CEO\, Chris Draft\, has been invited to be a Patient Advocate for the Mayo Clinic’s SPORE Grant application. As a patient advocate\, Mr. Draft will be advising the Mayo Clinic Team in the successful preparation of the grant as well as assisting the team in the progress and funding decisions. \n  \nWhile attending the SPORE retreat\, Team Draft will also be meeting with Lung Cancer Survivor and advocate\, Linda Wortman. Many of you might recognize Linda through our lung cancer survivor series videos. Linda\, a retired flight attendant\, was diagnosed with lung cancer 5 years ago by doctors at the Mayo Clinic. \nYou can read more about Linda’s story and view Team Draft’s Survivor Series video here: \nhttps://www.teamdraft.org/newsmedia/linda-and-jerry-wortman-are-tackling-lung-cancer-2/

SUMMARY:Baltimore Orioles help Team Draft celebrate survivorship
DESCRIPTION:Baltimore\, MD. One\, Two\, Three strikes you’re out… Lung cancer Survivor Kimberly McNish as well as Sidney Kimmell Comprehensive Cancer Center at Johns Hopkins RN; Madelaine Binner\, and their husbands\, will represent Team Draft at the Baltimore Orioles Saturday night game against the Colorado Rockies\, as guests of lung cancer survivor and Orioles Director of Public Relations\, Monica Barlow. \nThe Orioles are no strangers to lung cancer. \nMonica Barlow\, Baltimore Orioles\, Director of PR\nBALTIMORE (WMAR) – She had champagne poured on her head a few weeks ago\, and we can’t wait to pop the cork again when she scores another victory over lung cancer. See this picture? Monica Barlow is in the middle surrounded by friends. Remember this picture. “I try to think about cancer as little as possible\,” said Barlow. We cannot stop thinking of a 35-year-old\, who runs marathons\, eats broccoli\, and has never took a swig of a cigarette only to find out she has lung cancer. “There are no why did this happen\,” she said. She was married for what seemed like minutes before the vow of in sickness and in health soared to the top of the medical charts. A lingering cough and her husband chased her to the doctor\, who said\, cancer chased to her lymph nodes and liver. “Which made it stage four\, as bad as it gets\,” said Barlow. Then her family\, the Orioles. This year of the birds\, became the year of the Barlow – giving her hope. “Everybody rallied\, incredible\,” she said. If the Orioles can show us a miracle why can’t we see a miracle in Monica. So tomorrow will come and she’ll take a pill that wasn’t available to her two years ago. That is another sign. Then the next day will come and more after that\, and her smile will never disappear. “Not going to define my life\,” said Barlow. Remember the picture\, see all her friends – she now has a bigger fan club. As we use the standing room only section in her heart to wish her the taste of champagne\, when she beats this disease.

DESCRIPTION:East Rutherford\, NJ. Lung Cancer Survivor Abraham Almanza and his family will be representing Team Draft at the NY Giants Training Camp at Quest Diagnostics Training Center. Abraham has a lot to celebrate this year. Diagnosed at age 15\, Abraham now celebrates his 16th year since diagnosis. He is also celebrating the birth of a new baby. \nThis year\, the Giants\, like many other N.F.L. teams\, have not gone away to a relatively remote location in New York\, Connecticut\, Vermont or Oregon\, as they had for nearly 80 years. The Giants instead chose to stay in the Meadowlands\, where several years ago\, they built a state-of-the-art practice facility with offices\, meeting and locker rooms\, multiple grass fields and a vast indoor field house. The players are housed in a swanky hotel overlooking the Giants’ compound. \nAbraham represents hope for the future as a lung cancer survivor. Since the age of 15\, Abraham has battled lung cancer. He now has a new lease on life and has been able to start a new life with a new generation of Almanza’s.

SUMMARY:Creating with Joey
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta\, GA. Creating with Joey was organized by the Lerner Family to honor the life of a young\, healthy\, non-smoker who was suddenly diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of 39 and passed away at the age of 40. \nJoey’s sister once wrote: \nYears ago\, Joey once wrote on his painting\, “Boxers and artists are a lot alike. Artists paint pictures with paint like a boxer throws punches.” Even then\, Joey knew he was a fighter. \nHe was quiet. Some call it shy. We call it extraordinary. A man of few words but with a heart of verses. His silence was filled with pure goodness. And when he spoke\, it was profound. We all listened in our own individual way. A family that heard his courageous fight. Together\, we watched him- hiding his one struggle to prevent our own from overcoming us. We immersed ourselves in his grace\, selflessness\, strength\, and deep love for us. He was relentless. And as he fought\, our already strong family found a new meaning. The definition of family surpassed any human dictionary. We defined life\, love\, and unity through Joey. Without him saying a word\, he taught us how to truly live- how to find strength when you think you have absolutely nothing left\, how to truly be selfless\, how to let petty differences disappear in the midst of what is important\, and how to see someone’s true soul regardless of their physical presence. \nTeam Draft was honored to spend the night helping to celebrate the life and art of Joseph S. Lerner\, III\, affectionately known to all as “Joey”. \nDonate Today to the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer

SUMMARY:UCLA Medical Center
DESCRIPTION:Westwood Los Angeles\, CA. Team Draft will be touring the UCLA Medical Center and talking with the Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Medicine and Director of UCLA Lung Cancer Research Program\, Dr. Steven Dubinett. \nUCLA Medical Center lung cancer researchers are developing a variety of new treatments designed to stimulate a patient’s own immune system to fight the cancer. In one approach\, a specific type of immune stimulating cell\, called a dendritic cell\, is administered to patients as a vaccine. In another approach\, experimental medications are given to patients in a manner that increases the number and function of their own dendritic cells. Alternatively\, a gene therapy vaccine has been developed in which patients are immunized\, like getting a tetanus or flu shot\, so that they develop immunity to their cancer. UCLA is an important basic research center for dendritic cell and gene immunotherapy. In addition\, at any given time several clinical trials are in progress in which patients with lung cancer can participate. \nAs one of the leaders in the medical research community\, UCLA Medical Center is actively involved in several on-going clinical trials specific to Lung Cancer\, designed to evaluate the effectiveness of various diagnostic tools for early lung cancer detection\, including low dose CT scan\, Fluorescence (LIFE) bronchoscopy\, and specialized sputum analysis. Team Draft will be going over the Thoracic Oncology Program as well as the Dendritic Cell Immunotherapy and Gene Immunotherapy for Lung Cancer. To read more about the Lung Cancer program at UCLA Medical Center\, please visit the following link: http://www.lung.med.ucla.edu/research/research4.htm \nDr. Steven M. Dubinett is Chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and Director of the Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center (JCCC) Lung Cancer Research Program. He has extensive experience in translational investigation\, academic administration\, mentorship and peer review. He is jointly appointed as Professor in three departments: Medicine\, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine\, and Molecular and Medical Pharmacology. At UCLA since 1988\, he is a member of the Institute of Molecular Medicine\, the Molecular Biology Institute\, and the California NanoSystems Institute. Building on original discoveries relevant to inflammation in the pathogenesis of lung cancer\, he has developed a translational research program which now utilizes these laboratory-based discoveries in the translational research and clinical environment. Dr. Dubinett has received continuous peer-reviewed federal funding for translational lung cancer research for more than 20 years. As a member of NCI.s Translational Research Working Group\, Dr. Dubinett participated in designing pathways to clinical goals: developmental pathways that characterize the transformation of scientific discoveries into new clinical modalities for oncology. Dr. Dubinett serves as the Director for Biomarker Development for the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group and oversees biospecimen utilization in the context of clinical trials. He currently serves as the Chair of the Research Evaluation Panel for biospecimen utilization for the American College of Radiology Imaging Network/National Lung Screening Trial (ACRIN/NLST). He also is a member of the FDA Cellular\, Tissue & Gene Therapies Advisory Committee. \nTeam Draft is excited to learn more about what UCLA is doing to change the state of lung cancer. \nDonate Today to the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer

SUMMARY:Boston University School of Medicine
DESCRIPTION:Boston\, MA. Team Draft will be touring the Boston University School of Medicine and talking with the Director of the Cancer Center\, Dr. Douglas Faller about the research that The Cancer Center is doing. Dr. Faller has a PHD from MIT and a Medical Degree from Harvard. \nThe BU Cancer Center research activities are organized into three Programs: two programs are translationally based (T1 Translational Cancer Research Program and the Hormone-Responsive Cancers Research Program) and one program is population-based (Cancer Prevention and Control in Diverse Populations). Investigators in different research programs collaborate extensively\, allowing greater opportunity for interdisciplinary and translational research. \nThe Cancer Prevention and Control in Diverse Populations Program goals are to improve the scientific bases of cancer control\, especially in understudied populations; study methods of promoting equity of access\, treatment\, and outcomes of health care for people with cancer and people at risk for cancer; and develop and evaluate strategies to reduce disparities in the incidence\, prevalence\, and burden of cancer and related adverse health conditions that exist among specific population groups. \nThe Hormone-Responsive Cancers Research Program focuses on basic and translational research directed toward endocrine-responsive tumors\, particularly breast cancer and prostate cancer. These diseases in particular represent significant cancer disparities for black populations\, with significantly higher incidence in the case of prostate cancer\, and significantly higher mortality rates for both cancers.\nMembers of this program study hormone signaling in normal and malignant cells\, the role of micronutrients in cancer cell proliferation\, mechanisms by which environmental toxins induce malignancy\, and mechanisms of metastasis and progression\, among other areas of research. \nThe members of the T1 Translational Cancer Research Program focus their research on the processes involved in the mechanisms initiating malignancy and underlying malignant cell growth and metastases\, and the identification of target molecules and development of targeted therapeutics. \nDonate Today to the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer

SUMMARY:GHS vs JLM Spirit Week Game Day
DESCRIPTION:Greensville\, SC. Team Draft will join rival high schools Greenville and JL Mann to celebrate the end of the high schools’ annual Spirit Week competition this Friday\, Sept 13 at Sirrine Stadium. This will be a game to celebrate and honor cancer survivorship. \nDuring halftime\, cancer survivors will be recognized throughout the stadium with balloon luminaries purchased by Spirit Week supporters and the combined grand total of monies raised this week will be revealed. The high schools hope to raise enough money to pay for the 12’ wide x 140’ long “Spirit Bridge” that will be a central feature in the park. \nThis year both J.L. Mann and Greenville High Schools are joining forces to raise funds for one charity – The Cancer Survivors Park\, a project of Patients First. “This park is redefining the meaning of a survivor”\, says Greenville High School Student Body President Charlie Stone. “Cancer is something that affects everyone. When someone is diagnosed with cancer\, everyone around them is diagnosed. A survivor is the person fighting cancer now\, the caregivers\, family and friends of those patients and even those left behind when someone loses the earthly battle with the disease.” J.L. Mann High School Student Body President\, Caroline Grigg\, adds\, “We really wanted to make a large positive impact on the community and we wanted our schools to get involved with something that they could enjoy for years to come and know it would continually touch many lives. The Cancer Survivors Park gives us that opportunity.” \nThe Cancer Survivors Park (CSP)\, to be located on an approximately 3-acre site along the Swamp Rabbit Trail adjacent to the Chamber of Commerce in downtown Greenville\, will provide a place of respite and rejuvenation and will serve as a platform for holistic programs designed to enhance the healing experience. “With a vision to be more than just a another beautiful park\, the CSP has been uniquely designed to blend meditative spaces\, inspirational sculpture and cutting edge technology to encourage each one of us to become an active participant in our own health and healing and to live each moment we are given to its fullest\,” says co-founder and COO Diane Gluck. She adds that “By bringing education\, art and support programs out into the community\, we hope to re-integrate survivorship into the on-going fabric of life.” \nIndeed\, there are no other parks anywhere that combine the healing aspects of open spaces with on-going survivorship and healing programs. Over 10 years in the planning\, the CSP brings together the countless investments and hours of input from families and volunteers with the essential support of numerous community partners – the City of Greenville\, Renewable Water Resources\, Design Strategies\, Arbor Engineering\, Naturaland Trust\, Upstate Forever\, Greenville Health System\, and Bon Secours St. Francis Health System – to make the vision a reality. \nIn that same spirit of healing\, for the first time ever\, Greenville High School and JL Mann High School have channeled their Spirit Week rivalries toward one theme – survivorship\, and one charity – the Cancer Survivors Park. \nDonate Now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer
