DESCRIPTION:View Photos \nCharlotte\, NC. US Army Green Beret and lung cancer survivor Richard Stayskal and his family represented Team Draft at Bank of America Stadium on Monday Night. The Stayskals watched the Carolina Panthers take on the New Orleans with Team Draft co-founder\, and former Carolina Panther\, Chris Draft.  \n \n\nSgt. 1st Class Richard Stayskal was deployed to Ramadi\, Iraq\, in 2004 when he was shot by a sniper. The round\, which he kept as a souvenir\, pierced his left lung and nearly killed him. \n\n\n The round is “a reminder of how fragile life is\,” he told Charlotte’s Fox 46. “Something could change everything in an instant.” \n\n\n Despite beating the odds of such a grievous wound in combat\, something else did change in an instant for the 37-year-old Green Beret when\, following a June 2017 visit to a civilian doctor to address severe breathing issues the Army told him was a simple case of pneumonia\, he received terrible news. \n\n\n “Did a biopsy and when I woke up my wife was crying\,” Stayskal told Fox 46. “And he [the doctor] was telling her that I had cancer.” \n\n\n The tumor in Stayskal’s lungs had been egregiously misdiagnosed by Army doctors\, the report said\, allowing it to double in size and spread to other vital organs — and into stage four terminal lung cancer. \n\n\n Now\, the father of two daughters\, ages 9 and 11\, said doctors have given him a life expectancy of at least a year. \nRead the full story \nIn 2012\, we launched our inaugural Team Draft Survivor Series initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. Sandy and Steve joined Rams Alumni on the Throwback Terrace Deck and watched the Los Angeles Rams lose a close game to the visiting Philadelphia Eagles. #changingthefaceoflungcancer \n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhy are so many women who have never lit up developing this disease?\nBy Aimee Swartz\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n In 2012\, Sandy Jauregui-Baza was hiking along the Tamul waterfall in San Luis Potosí\, Mexico\, when she started coughing and having trouble breathing. “I remember thinking I must be coming down with something\,” she recalls. \nJauregui-Baza was an avid exerciser; she ran or hiked daily\, logging more than 100 miles each month. She ate clean\, avoiding almost all processed foods. She figured she was too healthy for anything to be seriously wrong. But after developing flu-like symptoms\, she went to an urgent care clinic in Los Angeles. The doctor thought it might be tuberculosis\, based on the results of her cloudy chest X-ray and her recent honeymoon in Nepal\, where the infectious disease is common. But a few days later\, when the definitive test for TB came back negative\, doctors did a lung biopsy to look for other causes. \nThe final diagnosis: Jauregui-Baza had stage IV lung cancer\, the most advanced form of the disease; it had spread into the bones of her spinal column. “I thought the doctors had to be kidding\,” says Jauregui-Baza\, now 32. “I’ve never even smoked\, and I had just hiked to the base camp of Mount Everest. How could I have lung cancer?” The prognosis was grim: More than 95 percent of stage IV lung cancer patients succumb to the disease within five years of diagnosis. Bill and his wife tailgated with L7 before watching the New York Jets take on the Houston Texans. #tacklinglungcancer #suitelife  \nMOUNTAINSIDE\, NJ — Bill Schrul of Mountainside was a healthy\, athletic man who never smoked a day in his life. Yet on June 13\, 2012\, Schrul was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.\n \nIt was a diagnosis Schrul and his family did not think could happen.  \n“I couldn’t be more shocked\,” Schrul said. \nIn reality\, lung cancer is the world’s number one killer. In the U.S.\, more people die of lung cancer than pancreatic\, breast and prostate cancer combined. Although it is the most underfunded cancer\, according to Lung Cancer Research Foundation. \nSince being diagnosed Shrul has taken multiple medications and undergone a clinical trial. He is doing well now. \n“I workout generally five days a week and do rather well. My breathing is not what it used to be.” \nNow it has become Schrul’s mission to spread the word.\n \n“It is so important to me to educate people about lung cancer\,” Schrul said. “My friends were overwhelmed to find out it kills far more women than breast cancer. It is viewed as smokers disease but I have always stayed healthy and fit. I never touched a cigarette in my life. It could happen to you or your wife\, anyone that breathes can get lung cancer. The group will tailgate with the Elf Pack before watching the Browns take on the visiting Carolina Panthers. \nExercise enthusiast Lisa Moran chooses not to let a Stage IV lung cancer diagnosis at age 44 get in the way of living life. Today\, she is a lung cancer advocate and encourages others to speak with their doctors about molecular testing. \nWhen I hiked up the Manitou Incline on Pikes Peak\, I felt physically at my best but my breathing was labored. Friends and family suggested it was the change in altitude. My breathing problems progressed to a persistent cough and heaviness in my chest\, but more than one doctor said my lungs sounded clear. When a friend asked if I would climb the incline with her\, I agreed but felt it would be safer for both of us if I had my breathing problems checked before making the trek again. \nResults from an X-ray and CT scan confirmed a mass in my lung. I had a bronchoscopy to take a tumor sample\, and I was diagnosed with Stage IV non-small cell adenocarcinoma of the lung. I was told it was inoperable and incurable. I remember how amazing it was to go and do a halftime show for high school marching band. Just the size of the stadium and being with all my friends watching the game. It was a late afternoon start\, and was a late afternoon start\, and the first flurries of the winter actually fell in the fourth quarter. I attended with my father\, my brother\, my grandfather\, and my uncle– we had a tradition of going to one game each year together. The game went into overtime. The Dawg defense made a huge stop on fourth down\, and we kicked a field goal for the win. The speakers blasted “Shout” and I turned to see my 82 year-old grandfather dancing with a stranger in elation. The group will watch the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the visiting San Diego Chargers. #tacklinglungcancer #SundayNightFootball #LCSM  \nMy Journey. Hmm\, how to start. Well I thought I was a healthy\, strong\, hard working adult. Never called off work\, enjoyed my social life on days off. And ate and drank anything I wanted. Basically I felt invincible. At 45 years of age I set Pennsylvania State Bench press record. And was at gym everyday making my body stronger. Umm was I?\nA friend of mine said I looked pale. I myself was feeling weaker in the gym weekly and really starting to feel fatigued and taking naps. And then the weight lose. A total of over 45 lbs in 2 months. I as a typical person that’s always in denial blamed it on my long hours at work on the Railroad as a Trainmaster. Also poor eating habits and late party nights with the fellas.\nThen came the day went to doctor for bloodwork. Oh my\, I was a total mess. Anemia\, high blood pressure\, liver enzymes and kidney enzymes out the roof. Along with about 5 other things I can’t even remember.\nAfter many more test and many more needles and scans I got the call of possible Cancer. Wow! What do you say\, nawwww. Probably something else. Then came the scans and biopsy’s. Stage 4 Lung Cancer! Numb\, denial\,scared\,worried\,sad! The list goes on over and over in my mind. The words 6 months to live. Wow! This was March of 2015 \, just 3 months before my Daughter Haley was to graduate High School\, was I gonna see her graduating\, should I tell her. Confused and lost in my own mined. \nAfter rounds of chemo and a target therapy drug I was stable and was having shrinkage in areas. And rapidly getting stronger and putting weight back on. This was 2016. Also re broke my own Bench Press record for Pennsylvania. What did all this do? Made me party more and live a crazy lifestyle that wasn’t good for my body. I again\, felt invisible.\nSo now after almost 4years of fighting this disease I have changed my lifestyle . Since 2016 I’ve had 4 more experiences of cancer growth. Tim and his group will watch the Bengals take on the Denver Broncos. \nTim turned 37 last month. He has never smoked. \nSo it came as a shock when he was diagnosed with stage-four lung cancer. \nThe Tri-State has one of the highest lung cancer rates in the U.S. because it’s one of the heaviest smoking areas in the country\, according to Dr. John Morris. But people who have never had a cigarette make up a growing percentage of lung cancer diagnoses.  \nBetween 10 and 15 percent of lung cancer diagnoses are in people who never smoked. Radon gas and pollution are two contributors. \n“I think there’s a sense that most people with lung cancer are smokers\, so they did it to themselves\, which is very unfair because we’re seeing more and more lung cancer in non-smokers\,” Morris said. \nMorris is the physician Tim chose to guide him through his battle with cancer. \n“He offered hope\,” Tim said. “He offered a chance of treatment at the time that was very new.” \nIt was a combination of an immunotherapy drug and chemotherapy. \n“It has made a dramatic difference\,” Morris said. “He was very symptomatic when I first saw him. I knew something was wrong. I’d experienced months of a small but barely nagging cough\, and more recently\, shortness of breath that prompted my visit to the doctor. By the end of January 2018\, I’d get the shocking news that I\, a 39yo mother of young children and a non-smoker had advanced stage lung cancer (later classified as Stage 4.)  I was blessed enough to have a friend immediately connect me with Team Draft and Chris instantly got the wheels in motion for me to meet other survivors. I went from being completely desperate to having hope that I\, like them\, may have a chance to beat the statistics. Meeting survivors and seeing all the work that Chris and others like him are doing every. single. day to fight for funding equity and lung cancer awareness was eye-opening to  say the least. \n\n\nToday I’m doing well and with targeted therapy and prayers\, currently have no evidence of disease in my body! The battle is never-ending though. Lung cancer is a beast that likes to come back\, so we cannot give up and need to keep pushing for more research to keep us alive and save other people from going through this in the future. She sold one to a Silicon Valley gaming company for more than $1 million. \n“I work\, I work! I have so much fun and when I work in Silicon valley\, I have so much fun\,” laughed Truong who is now known as Queen of the Startups in her native country. \nLast year\, she traveled back to Vietnam to produce a feature film. Team Draft’s fifth annual Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge kicked off on November 1\, 2018. This unique fund raising challenge gives lung cancer survivors the opportunity to raise funds for public awareness and cutting-edge research that is giving new hope to those battling this often misunderstood disease. Leveraging our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, we arranged to have lung cancer survivors attend games at NFL stadiums across the country during the last two months of the 2012-2013 season. By the time the initiative concluded at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii\, more than 30 lung cancer survivors representing 30 cancer centers and nearly every NFL team had participated. Given the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, we have expanded it beyond the NFL to the NBA\, the NHL and MLS—and to the NFL UK in London! Our Tackling Cancer initiative builds on the success of already established A Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, and celebrates all cancer survivors and caregivers\, highlighting the similar journeys for those battling the disease. \nWhat Is Our Tackling Cancer Initiative? \nWhile Team Draft’s primary focus has been lung cancer\, we recognize that all cancer survivors and caregivers are all on a similar journey\, fighting a similar battle.  In short\, we are all on the same team. \nOur goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and caregivers\, to spark discussion and the sharing of information between those battling different types of cancer\, and to raise awareness on a local and national level about the importance of having a solid cancer care TEAM for all cancers. \n \nWhat is Team Draft? \nTeam Draft is an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation created by nationally recognized health advocate and former 12 year NFL linebacker\, Chris Draft and his late wife\, Keasha during Keasha’s year-long battle with lung cancer. Their hope was that Keasha’s valiant fight to dance\, smile and live would give hope\, comfort and inspiration to the patients\, caregivers and healthcare providers who are battling the disease every day. \nWhile attending Clemson University\, Keasha was a member of the Rally Cat’s dance squad before graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation\, Keasha worked as an engineer while dancing for the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets before working in the pharmaceutical industry. She was an energetic\, vibrant young woman who had never smoked when she was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer in December 2010. At the time\, her only “symptom” was a slight shortness of breath a few days earlier. Despite the diagnosis and knowing the long odds they faced\, Keasha and Chris decided to fight back. On November 27\, 2011\, standing side-by-side\, they launched Team Draft at their wedding. One month later\, Keasha lost her courageous fight and died at the age of 38. \nTeam Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The fact is anybody can get lung cancer. Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked—including Keasha—are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. View Photos \nIf you can’t laugh at cancer\, you’re in trouble. \nFortunately\, Tabitha Paccione\, a 36-year-old teacher with stage IV lung cancer\, has the most amazing medicine immediately to her right and immediately to her left. \n \nThat would be her son\, 13-year-old Dylan\, and her daughter\, Brooklyn\, a comedian and nurse rolled into the body of a nine-year-old. \n“I believe in being honest with them\,” Paccione explains as she makes cheese quesadillas for lunch. \nWith tears welling\, Paccione recalls the time before she was diagnosed with lung cancer when she started coughing so hard she had to pull to the side of the road. With her kids in the car\, her body fell apart and she vomited. \n“I had to wash my hands off in a sprinkler\,” Paccione recalls\, wiping away tears of embarrassment. \nBut instead of a silent sober moment at the kitchen table where Paccione and I talk\, gales of laughter from Dylan and Brooklyn wash away all traces of sadness. \nEven Mom’s tears instantly change from grief to glee. View Photos \nThe bad news is that I have cancer. The good news is that cancer has taught me to live life to the fullest. I never allow cancer to define me. I rarely miss an opportunity to hike\, bike\, or do anything that strengthens my immune system and keeps me out in nature. \nIn October 2011 I met Penny Blume\, the love of my life\, on a lung cancer support community on Inspire. Penny left this earth on Jan. 21\, 2014 after battling small cell lung cancer for 32 months. Penny and I spent our time together traveling back and forth from New York to California. She passed at my home in Santa Rosa\, Calif.\, after trying one last clinical trial at Stanford Cancer Center. \nPenny and I turned to each other for emotional support to battle our cancers and fell in love. It was after a couple of months of texting and chatting on social media that we decided to meet. Penny flew to California for her first visit in January 2012\, and the rest is history. \nMy relationship with Penny also marked the beginning of my advocacy work for lung cancer. It started when a friend of ours asked us to post our story on a lung cancer survivors group on Facebook. I posted something\, and then Penny and I decided to repost it on Inspire\, since it was the site that brought us together. In September 2012 our story was shared by ABC News and Good Morning America. In the following weeks\, it was shared and tweeted all over the world… \nMy last promises to Penny were that I would continue to live life to the fullest and advocate for lung cancer research and awareness. Leveraging our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, we arranged to have lung cancer survivors attend games at NFL stadiums across the country during the last two months of the 2012-2013 season. By the time the initiative concluded at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii\, more than 30 lung cancer survivors representing 30 cancer centers and nearly every NFL team had participated. Given the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, we have expanded it beyond the NFL to the NBA\, the NHL and MLS—and to the NFL UK in London! Our Tackling Cancer initiative builds on the success of already established A Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, and celebrates all cancer survivors and caregivers\, highlighting the similar journeys for those battling the disease. \n  \nWhat Is Our Tackling Cancer Initiative? \nWhile Team Draft’s primary focus has been lung cancer\, we recognize that all cancer survivors and caregivers are all on a similar journey\, fighting a similar battle.  In short\, we are all on the same team. \n \nThrough our Tackling Cancer initiative\, we are working with NFL teams to arrange to have cancer survivors (regardless of cancer type) from their local cancer centers and their caregivers participate in a “tackling cancer” football clinic and discussion. Our goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and caregivers\, to spark discussion and the sharing of information between those battling different types of cancer\, and to raise awareness on a local and national level about the importance of having a solid cancer care TEAM for all cancers. \n \n  \nWhat is Team Draft? \nTeam Draft is an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation created by nationally recognized health advocate and former NFL (Drafted in 1998 by the Chicago Bears) linebacker\, Chris Draft and his late wife\, Keasha during Keasha’s year-long battle with lung cancer. Their hope was that Keasha’s valiant fight to dance\, smile and live would give hope\, comfort and inspiration to the patients\, caregivers and healthcare providers who are battling the disease every day. \nWhile attending Clemson University\, Keasha was a member of the Rally Cat’s dance squad before graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation\, Keasha worked as an engineer while dancing for the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets before working in the pharmaceutical industry. She was an energetic\, vibrant young woman who had never smoked when she was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer in December 2010. At the time\, her only “symptom” was a slight shortness of breath a few days earlier. Despite the diagnosis and knowing the long odds they faced\, Keasha and Chris decided to fight back. On November 27\, 2011\, standing side-by-side\, they launched Team Draft at their wedding. One month later\, Keasha lost her courageous fight and died at the age of 38. \nTeam Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The fact is anybody can get lung cancer. Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked—including Keasha—are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. Research matters and spreading the word on LC. Make is personal. Being part of Team Draft and the Cardinals for Thursday night football exceeded expectations and was a great means to start thinking of a platform to share my story. Its all of us. #Research needed ~ Joanne Schlesinger \n \nI feel extremely blessed to have been granted the opportunity to attend a Thursday Night Football game with some of my Lung Cancer Sisters as guests of Christ Draft with #TeamDraft and we were graciously hosted by the Arizona Cardinals! This was a very exciting and truly a once in a lifetime experience! It was so neat to receive Pre-Game Sideline passes and to be so close to the players and watch them as they warmed up before the game! It was an honor to be able to represent the Lung Cancer Community from Arizona and to show the world what Lung Cancer looks like\, a Lung Cancer Survivor looks like me! Being a spectator at a nationally televised football game and being surrounded by everyday people\, was very impactful to me because for a few hours I was able to forget my diagnosis and simply enjoy and live in the present moment and feed off of the positive energy and atmosphere in the stadium! It goes on to show that by simply looking at our group\, no one would have guessed that each of us has been impacted by Lung Cancer. We all look like your average everyday people too! But it also proves that by simply being present and owning your story\, any setting can serve as an opportunity to share your story. Knowledge is power and no one knows my story better than I do! This is particularly valuable because at the end of the day Lung Cancer can affect anyone with lungs and it is crucial to have a conversation regarding this disease with everyone I encounter should the opportunity arise.
