SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Arena- Atlanta Hawks
DESCRIPTION: ( ATLANTA\, GA) – On Wednesday\, April 3\, 2013\, nearly twenty lung cancer survivors\, support teams\, and doctors will be on hand when the Atlanta Hawks honor Team Draft co-founder and former NFL linebacker\, Chris Draft\, with the Be Greater Atlanta Award. \nAtlanta Hawks To Honor Team Draft Co-Founder With Be Greater Atlanta Award During Nationally Televised Game \n ( ATLANTA\, GA) – On Wednesday\, April 3\, 2013\, nearly twenty lung cancer survivors\, support teams\, and doctors will be on hand when the Atlanta Hawks honor Team Draft co-founder and former NFL linebacker\, Chris Draft\, with the Be Greater Atlanta Award. The award recognizes individuals throughout Metro Atlanta who are making a difference in their communities and will be presented to Draft during the Hawks game against the New York Knicks—a game which will be televised nationally on ESPN—in recognition of Team Draft’s national lung cancer awareness efforts. \nThis Wednesday’s game is just the latest in Team Draft’s Survivor at Every Arena initiative. Working with teams throughout the NBA\, Team Draft is leading this national effort to have lung cancer survivors\, researchers and doctors attend games across the country. As part of Team Draft’s National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer\, the Survivor at Every Arena initiative is designed to raise awareness\, give hope to those battling the disease\, and shine a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nTeam Draft\, an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation\, is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The fact is\, anybody can get lung cancer. Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked—including Keasha and Abby—are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. Team Draft is out to change all that. “If we can take away the stigma that says you have to be a smoker to get lung cancer\, we have a real chance to educate people about the true nature of the disease\,” explains Draft. \nSince Chris and Keasha launched Team Draft at their wedding in November of 2011\, Team Draft has been on a mission to tackle cancer. Team Draft’s national campaign to raise public awareness and share the hope that now exists for those diagnosed with the disease has taken it to nearly 60 of the top cancer research and treatment facilities in North America. \n“Our hope is not only to positively impact research funding\, but to improve the quality of life for those affected by lung cancer\,” says Draft. “We aren’t fighting against lung cancer\, we’re fighting for people. That’s why we are leading this national campaign to change the face of lung cancer.”

SUMMARY:Wake Forest Baptist Health Comprehensive Cancer Center
DESCRIPTION:Marking Team Draft’s 70th cancer center visit on our national campaign to change the face of lung cancer is Wake Forest Baptist Health Comprehensive Cancer Center in Winston-Salem\, North Carolina. \nThe Wake Forest University (WFU) School of Medicine was founded in 1902 and has grown into a large academic medical center with a 900 person faculty and over 100 buildings. The Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University (CCCWFU) became an NCI-designated cancer center in 1974 and a comprehensive center in 1990. \nThe mission of the Cancer Center is to improve the lives of cancer patients by focusing basic\, clinical\, and population sciences on the problems of cancer prevention\, early diagnosis\, and novel treatment. The membership of CCCWFU is comprised of more than a 100 person faculty from 39 departments at the University. The Center’s research is divided into four programs: Cell Growth and Survival\, Cellular Damage and Defense\, Clinical Research\, and Cancer Prevention and Control. To facilitate the scientific and translational goals of the programs\, the CCCWFU has established three Centers of Excellence in brain\, breast\, and prostate cancer. \nThe CCCWFU recognizes the importance of building cross-departmental and trans-disciplinary team approaches to advance the science and treatment of cancer. Teams have been developed in cancer genomics\, the tumor microenvironment\, nanotechnology\, novel anticancer drugs\, natural products\, cancer survivorship\, and cancer health disparities. Collaborations with other centers and schools within the institution are an essential element to the success of this research. The Cancer Center has strong connections with the Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine\, the Center for Nanotechnology and Molecular Materials\, the WFU Departments of Physics and Chemistry\, and the WFU-Virginia Tech joint school of Biomedical Engineering. \nThe Center is the main tertiary referral center for patients in a large geographic region. The CCCWFU provides a multidisciplinary approach to treatment in a state-of-the-art facility and provides patients with access to nearly 250 clinical trials. CCCWFU was founded with a strong community orientation and continues this tradition by addressing cancer issues that are important to the region’s substantial numbers of African Americans\, Latinos\, Native Americans\, rural poor\, and pockets of urban poor. The Center is an active partner with the Maya Angelou Center for Health Equity at WFU\, which was founded by the renowned poet to address health disparities across the region and the nation. \nThe focus of the Center’s community outreach is on providing culturally-relevant access to education for cancer patients\, their families\, and the general public regarding advances in prevention\, early detection\, treatment\, and survivorship.

SUMMARY:Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Institute
DESCRIPTION:Patient Navigation was founded by Harold P. Freeman\, M.D. in 1990\, when he initiated and developed the first Patient Navigation program in Harlem to reduce disparities in access to diagnosis and treatment of cancer\, particularly among poor and uninsured people. In 2007\, as a direct result of a $2.5M grant received from the Amgen Foundation\, the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention established the Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Institute (HPFPNI) to support patient navigation training to individuals associated with organizations. The Institute opened its doors to address the growth in patient navigation programs\, but also to offer standards and best practices that are customizable to meet each program’s needs. \nTeam Draft will have the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Harold Freeman and discuss the Institute’s program and how the Institute is leading the way in addressing the current needs of the surrounding community. \nThe Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Institute\, located in New York City\, serves as the gold standard in patient navigation and offers the only certificate of completion program in patient navigation endorsed by Harold P. Freeman\, M.D. The Institute’s goals are to: \n· Promote standards for patient navigation programs through an emphasis on the Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Model. \n· To help others learn best practices by ensuring that programs adhere to the peer-reviewed\, recognized definition and measures for patient navigation set forth by the Patient Navigation Research Program (PNRP). \nTo date\, the Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Institute has taught over 1\,000 people the skills of successful patient navigation and has served leading organizations such as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society\, Cleveland Clinic\, and the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention with training programs aimed at increasing their efficiencies and supporting retention rates of patients via patient navigation.

The event is part of Team Draft’s Survivor at Every Stadium initiative. \n Having been a part of the last Falcons team to reach the NFC Championship Game\, Draft knows something about what it takes to get to this level\, but he says that is nothing compared to Abby’s strength and determination. “Abby’s courage and grit are truly an inspiration\, and I can’t think of anybody I would rather have join me at the game\,” says Draft.
