SUMMARY:University of Miami Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center
DESCRIPTION:Miami\, FL. Team Draft will visit the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center\, in the heart of the city of Miami. \nAbout Sylvester Cancer Center: \nThe Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center integrates all cancer-related activities of the faculty of the University of Miami. This includes all cancer treatment\, research and education\, and outreach conducted at the University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine and within the University of Miami Health System (UHealth). As the only University-based Comprehensive Cancer Center in the region\, we play a unique role in the South Florida medical community. Since it’s founding in 1992\, Sylvester has transformed cancer treatment\, research and education in South Florida and beyond. \nSylvester physicians treated nearly 6\,000 newly diagnosed cancer patients within the University of Miami Health System in 2012. In addition\, we supervised the care of more than 2\,500 new cancer patients at Jackson Memorial Hospital. This represents the largest experience of any hospital or health system in the counties that make up South Florida. \nThe Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center Hospital\, in downtown Miami\, serves as the hub for cancer diagnosis and treatment at UHealth\, with additional activities taking place at two adjacent hospitals owned by UHealth – the University of Miami Hospital\, which is just across the street from Sylvester\, and the Ana Bates Leach Eye Hospital\, which is only a few blocks away. To better serve our patients throughout the region\, we have established sophisticated\, outpatient treatment facilities at Deerfield Beach\, Plantation\, Hollywood and Kendall. Services at these satellite or regional centers include clinic visits with our physicians\, radiation therapy\, infusion therapy\, imaging\, and laboratory services. All of this is part of our commitment to providing convenient\, as well as expert and compassionate patient care.\nPatient care at Sylvester is multidisciplinary\, highly specialized\, and “advance of the art.” Highly trained nurse navigators help our patients access the right physicians and stay on track through complex treatment protocols. Physicians are subspecialized according to the site of origin of the cancer (breast cancer\, prostate cancer\, etc)\, which allows them to focus fully on the needs of our patients and their families. \n \nDonate Today To Change The Face of Lung Cancer

SUMMARY:UT Southwestern Simmons Cancer Center
DESCRIPTION:Dallas\, TX. Team Draft will visit with the head of UT Southwestern Simmons Cancer Center’s lung cancer program\, Dr. Joan Schiller. \nDr. Schiller is Professor and Chief of the Division of Hematology-Oncology at UT Southwestern Medical Center and Deputy Director of Simmons Cancer Center. She is founder and president of Free to Breathe\, a partnership for lung cancer survival. \nWorking with her colleagues in radiation oncology and thoracic surgery\, Dr. Schiller focuses her work on treatment of small cell and non-small cell lung cancer. She is an expert in matching the medication (chemotherapy) to the tumor to achieve maximum results\nPrevention\, early detection\, and personalized treatment of lung cancer are her passions. While 85 percent of lung cancer patients have smoked\, there is a rising percentage of lung cancer developing in never-smokers\, particularly in women. Yet women have a better chance of survival from the disease than men. Early detection is a major factor in treatment strategy\, as is the makeup of a patient’s cancer. \nPeople who’ve never smoked who get lung cancer frequently have very unique mutations in their tumors. The good news is there are now medications that specifically target these mutations\, and by using them there’s an excellent chance of having a very dramatic response.” ~ Dr. Joan Schiller \nDonate now to support the national campaign to change the face of lung cancer!

She was strong. And she never smoked.”\nIn her final months\, the couple launched “Team Draft\,” a charity aimed at helping change the stigma of lung cancer.\nDraft’s wife passed away just one year later\, and now he’s working with cancer survivors like Newcomb to raise awareness about the disease.\n“We are not fighting against lung cancer\, we’re fighting for people\,” he says.\nEven as a war veteran\, Newcomb says this has been the toughest battle of his life. His obligation now is helping others.\n“Spread the word. Lung cancer is not a smoker’s disease\,” he says. \nDonate to Help Change the Face of Lung Cancer

SUMMARY:The University of Kansas Cancer Center's Quest for National Cancer Institute Designation
DESCRIPTION:Central to The University of Kansas Cancer Center’s vision of eliminating the cancer burden in the heartland was achieving designation by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). In June\, 2012\, NCI designation signifies that our academic cancer center has achieved the highest standards and that promising cancer research leading directly to improved care and treatment is taking place right here in our own community. Currently\, there are 67 NCI-designated Cancer Centers and 41 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States. \nThe NCI Accreditation Process\nNCI designation is the highest recognition for an academic cancer center\, opening doors to expanded research funding and related economic benefits and jobs\, and bringing the most advanced cancer care to patients. \nWith NCI designation\, our region will achieve a new level of excellence as a bioscience research center\, providing the opportunity to more fully leverage the research investments made by the University of Kansas and the Stowers Institute for Medical Research. \nNCI designation drives growth across many related segments of the regional economy. Approximately 1\,800 employees\, including faculty\, research support\, clinical and administrative staff\, are specifically devoted to cancer care and research activities. We estimate that since 2006\, the NCI designation pursuit has created 1\,123 jobs and had a regional economic impact of $453 million. \nNo other regional initiative has as much potential to simultaneously drive economic development and public health as achieving NCI designation. \nMost importantly\, NCI designation at KU means Kansans do not have to travel out of state to find the most advanced care and clinical trials. They will be available close to home. \nWe aren’t stopping with becoming the 67th NCI-designated center. This designation is merely a waypoint in our journey to ultimately eliminate cancer. \n  \n– See more at: http://www.kucancercenter.org/cancer-research-and-education/nci-designation#sthash.FdvnNsiH.dpuf \n\nDonate Now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:Team Draft Tackles Cancer With The St. Louis Rams
DESCRIPTION:(Earth City\, MO) – Former St. Louis Rams linebacker and Team Draft co-founder\, Chris Draft\, is returning to training camp\, but this time he won’t be preparing to take on divisional rivals like the San Francisco 49ers or the Seattle Seahawks.  This time\, he will be tackling cancer—an opponent with which he is all too familiar.  In December 2010\, Draft’s then girlfriend\, Keasha\, a vibrant young woman who had never smoked\, was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer.  Despite the diagnosis and knowing the long odds they faced\, Chris and Keasha decided to fight back\, and on November\, 27\, 2011\, standing hand-in-hand\, they launched Team Draft at their wedding.  A month later\, Keasha lost her courageous battle and died at the age of 38.  From the beginning\, Team Draft has been on a mission to tackle cancer.  “Our hope is not only to positively impact research funding\, but to improve the quality of life for those affected by cancer\,” says Draft.  “We aren’t fighting against cancer\, we’re fighting for people.”  This week Team Draft brings that fight to Rams Park for a unique “tackling cancer” football skills camp. \n  \nOn Wednesday\, June 18\, more than 150 cancer survivors of all ages and cancer types and their caregivers representing Siteman Cancer Center\, Mercy Health Cancer Center\, Saint Louis University Cancer Center\, and Lung Cancer Connections\, Inc.\, a Missouri-based community outreach group\, will join Chris and other Team Draft representatives\, Rams players\, cheerleaders\, and personnel who have themselves been touched by cancer on the Rams’ indoor practice field where they will participate in several football drills.  After the clinic\, representatives from Team Draft and LiveSTRONG will facilitate survivor and caregiver discussion groups focusing on various topics related to survivorship. \n  \nHaving played in the NFL for more than 10 years\, Draft knows something about going head to head with difficult competition\, but he says “nothing can prepare you for the anger\, frustration and fear you feel when you or somebody you care about is diagnosed with cancer.”  Draft goes on to explain that “through our Tackling Cancer events\, we want to give people who are battling the disease every day the opportunity to take out some of those emotions in a unique and positive way.  We want them to hit those bags like they’d hit cancer!” \n  \nFor the last three years\, Team Draft has been leading a National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer—a campaign that has taken the organization to more than 100 of the top cancer treatment and research facilities in the country.  And while Team Draft’s primary focus has been lung cancer\, as Draft explains\, “we recognize that all cancer survivors and caregivers are on a similar journey\, fighting a similar battle.”  “In short\,” he says\, “we’re all on the same team.”  Draft adds that “our Tackling Cancer events give Team Draft an opportunity to appreciate that shared journey by creating a unique experience for participating survivors and caregivers\, sparking discussion and the sharing of information between those battling different types of cancer and raising awareness on a local and national level about the importance of having a solid cancer care team.” \n  \nThe event\, which was organized by Team Draft and is sponsored in part by pharmaceuticals manufacturer Eli Lilly Company\, will take place at Rams Park\, 1 Rams Way\, Earth City\, Missouri\, on the evening of June 18.  Registration begins at 5:45\, and is limited to invited cancer survivors and caregivers. \n  \nAbout Team Draft \n  \nTeam Draft\, an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation\, is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.”  The fact is\, anybody can get lung cancer.  Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked—including Keasha—are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases.  Team Draft is out to change all that.  “If we can take away the stigma that says you have to be a smoker to get lung cancer\, we have a real chance to educate people about the true nature of the disease\,” explains Draft. \n To view the events photo gallery click here

SUMMARY:Seattle Cancer Care Alliance
DESCRIPTION:Seattle\, WA. Team Draft returned to the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance on Wednesday. The visit allowed us to catch up with 3 members of the lung cancer multi-discisplinary team at the SCCA: \nDr. Keith Eaton – Lung Medical Oncologist — Advances in Lung Cancer Care at SCCA\nDr. Michael Mulligan – Thoracic Surgeon – Advances in Lung Cancer Surgery \nDr. David Madtes – Pulmonologist — Lung Cancer Early Detection and Lung Cancer Screening\nBTMed and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) expanded their early lung cancer detection program (ELCD) for high-risk construction workers in Western Washington. As part of the program\, BTMed provides CT scans that screen for early stage lung cancer in former DOE construction workers who may have been exposed to hazardous substances while working at the nation’s nuclear weapons sites. The ELCD program\, which continues to serve at-risk workers in Oak Ridge\, Tennessee and Eastern Washington\, has already made a meaningful impact through the early detection and timely treatment of several individuals. \nAbout 160\,000 people in the United States die of lung cancer each year. Construction workers have a higher risk of lung cancer because of exposure to asbestos\, silica\, and other agents.
