SUMMARY:The University of Kansas Cancer Center's Quest for National Cancer Institute Designation
DESCRIPTION:Central to The University of Kansas Cancer Center’s vision of eliminating the cancer burden in the heartland was achieving designation by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). In June\, 2012\, NCI designation signifies that our academic cancer center has achieved the highest standards and that promising cancer research leading directly to improved care and treatment is taking place right here in our own community. Currently\, there are 67 NCI-designated Cancer Centers and 41 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States. \nThe NCI Accreditation Process\nNCI designation is the highest recognition for an academic cancer center\, opening doors to expanded research funding and related economic benefits and jobs\, and bringing the most advanced cancer care to patients. \nWith NCI designation\, our region will achieve a new level of excellence as a bioscience research center\, providing the opportunity to more fully leverage the research investments made by the University of Kansas and the Stowers Institute for Medical Research. \nNCI designation drives growth across many related segments of the regional economy. Approximately 1\,800 employees\, including faculty\, research support\, clinical and administrative staff\, are specifically devoted to cancer care and research activities. We estimate that since 2006\, the NCI designation pursuit has created 1\,123 jobs and had a regional economic impact of $453 million. \nNo other regional initiative has as much potential to simultaneously drive economic development and public health as achieving NCI designation. \nMost importantly\, NCI designation at KU means Kansans do not have to travel out of state to find the most advanced care and clinical trials. They will be available close to home. \nWe aren’t stopping with becoming the 67th NCI-designated center. This designation is merely a waypoint in our journey to ultimately eliminate cancer. \n  \n– See more at: http://www.kucancercenter.org/cancer-research-and-education/nci-designation#sthash.FdvnNsiH.dpuf \n\nDonate Now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:Team Draft Tackles Cancer With The St. Louis Rams
DESCRIPTION:(Earth City\, MO) – Former St. Louis Rams linebacker and Team Draft co-founder\, Chris Draft\, is returning to training camp\, but this time he won’t be preparing to take on divisional rivals like the San Francisco 49ers or the Seattle Seahawks.  This time\, he will be tackling cancer—an opponent with which he is all too familiar.  In December 2010\, Draft’s then girlfriend\, Keasha\, a vibrant young woman who had never smoked\, was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer.  Despite the diagnosis and knowing the long odds they faced\, Chris and Keasha decided to fight back\, and on November\, 27\, 2011\, standing hand-in-hand\, they launched Team Draft at their wedding.  A month later\, Keasha lost her courageous battle and died at the age of 38.  From the beginning\, Team Draft has been on a mission to tackle cancer.  “Our hope is not only to positively impact research funding\, but to improve the quality of life for those affected by cancer\,” says Draft.  “We aren’t fighting against cancer\, we’re fighting for people.”  This week Team Draft brings that fight to Rams Park for a unique “tackling cancer” football skills camp. \n  \nOn Wednesday\, June 18\, more than 150 cancer survivors of all ages and cancer types and their caregivers representing Siteman Cancer Center\, Mercy Health Cancer Center\, Saint Louis University Cancer Center\, and Lung Cancer Connections\, Inc.\, a Missouri-based community outreach group\, will join Chris and other Team Draft representatives\, Rams players\, cheerleaders\, and personnel who have themselves been touched by cancer on the Rams’ indoor practice field where they will participate in several football drills.  After the clinic\, representatives from Team Draft and LiveSTRONG will facilitate survivor and caregiver discussion groups focusing on various topics related to survivorship. \n  \nHaving played in the NFL for more than 10 years\, Draft knows something about going head to head with difficult competition\, but he says “nothing can prepare you for the anger\, frustration and fear you feel when you or somebody you care about is diagnosed with cancer.”  Draft goes on to explain that “through our Tackling Cancer events\, we want to give people who are battling the disease every day the opportunity to take out some of those emotions in a unique and positive way.  We want them to hit those bags like they’d hit cancer!” \n  \nFor the last three years\, Team Draft has been leading a National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer—a campaign that has taken the organization to more than 100 of the top cancer treatment and research facilities in the country.  And while Team Draft’s primary focus has been lung cancer\, as Draft explains\, “we recognize that all cancer survivors and caregivers are on a similar journey\, fighting a similar battle.”  “In short\,” he says\, “we’re all on the same team.”  Draft adds that “our Tackling Cancer events give Team Draft an opportunity to appreciate that shared journey by creating a unique experience for participating survivors and caregivers\, sparking discussion and the sharing of information between those battling different types of cancer and raising awareness on a local and national level about the importance of having a solid cancer care team.” \n  \nThe event\, which was organized by Team Draft and is sponsored in part by pharmaceuticals manufacturer Eli Lilly Company\, will take place at Rams Park\, 1 Rams Way\, Earth City\, Missouri\, on the evening of June 18.  Registration begins at 5:45\, and is limited to invited cancer survivors and caregivers. \n  \nAbout Team Draft \n  \nTeam Draft\, an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation\, is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.”  The fact is\, anybody can get lung cancer.  Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked—including Keasha—are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases.  Team Draft is out to change all that.  “If we can take away the stigma that says you have to be a smoker to get lung cancer\, we have a real chance to educate people about the true nature of the disease\,” explains Draft. \n To view the events photo gallery click here

SUMMARY:Knight Cancer Institute -- OHSU
DESCRIPTION:Portland\, OR. Team Draft will visit OHSU’s Knight Cancer Institute in Portland\, OR. Recently\, the Knight Cancer Institute was given a challenge. \nInspired by our mission to end cancer as we know it\, Phil and Penny Knight issued a $1 billion challenge on Sept. 20\, 2013. The Knights will give OHSU $500 million if we raise an additional $500 million by February of 2016. \nOver the last year\, nearly 6\,000 individuals from 48 states have stood alongside Phil and Penny by donating to the Knight Cancer Challenge. \nAnd today\, an anonymous donor has made the largest single gift to The Challenge to date. With a wish to remain unnamed\, one visionary has gifted the Knight Cancer Institute with $100 million to fuel our ambitious vision. This tremendous pledge brings the current total raised to nearly $419\,000\,000. \nhttp://www.ohsu.edu/blogs/96kmiles/2014/07/28/100-million-donation-fuels-ohsus-vision-to-stop-cancer/

SUMMARY:Seattle Cancer Care Alliance
DESCRIPTION:Seattle\, WA. Team Draft returned to the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance on Wednesday. The visit allowed us to catch up with 3 members of the lung cancer multi-discisplinary team at the SCCA: \nDr. Keith Eaton – Lung Medical Oncologist — Advances in Lung Cancer Care at SCCA\nDr. Michael Mulligan – Thoracic Surgeon – Advances in Lung Cancer Surgery \nDr. David Madtes – Pulmonologist — Lung Cancer Early Detection and Lung Cancer Screening\nBTMed and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA) expanded their early lung cancer detection program (ELCD) for high-risk construction workers in Western Washington. As part of the program\, BTMed provides CT scans that screen for early stage lung cancer in former DOE construction workers who may have been exposed to hazardous substances while working at the nation’s nuclear weapons sites. The ELCD program\, which continues to serve at-risk workers in Oak Ridge\, Tennessee and Eastern Washington\, has already made a meaningful impact through the early detection and timely treatment of several individuals. \nAbout 160\,000 people in the United States die of lung cancer each year. Construction workers have a higher risk of lung cancer because of exposure to asbestos\, silica\, and other agents.

DESCRIPTION:Chicago\, IL. Lung cancer survivors Jill Feldman (Rush University Cancer Center) and Susan Warmerdam (Northwestern Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center) will represent Team Draft at Soldier Field on Sunday. The Survivors will cheer on their hometown Chicago Bears against the visiting Buffalo Bills. \nJill Feldman:\nThe other control I had was to be my own advocate. I didn’t want my four kids to go ever have to go through what I had gone through so I began having CT scans when my mom was diagnosed. All was good until 2009 when the unthinkable happened and I became the patient. Considering my intimacy with lung cancer and being president of LUNGevity at the time\, the irony of being diagnosed at 39 years old with the same disease that I literally watched kill both of my parents\, and so many others I loved\, is still surreal. Thankfully the cancer was caught early\, I had surgery\, and was considered cured.\nRead more: https://www.teamdraft.org/survivorstories/jill-feldman-is-changing-the-face-of-lung-cancer/ \nSusan Warmerdam: \nAt 47\, the news that I had inoperable and\, according to the medical community\, incurable cancer was devastating. As soon as my initial shock and depression could be forced aside\, I decide that I would beat this disease. I would be the miracle patient\, and I vowed to do everything within my power to fight for my life. \nRead more: https://www.teamdraft.org/survivorstories/susan-warmerdam-is-changing-the-face-of-lung-cancer/ \nTeam Draft’s A Survivor at Every Stadium is committed to creating a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local and national level by using each NFL game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of lung cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nView Photo Gallery – A Survivor At Every Stadium: Chicago Bears \nDonate Now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer

SUMMARY:UT Health Science Center -- Cancer Treatment Research Center (CTRC)
DESCRIPTION:San Antonio\, TX. The latest stop on Team Draft’s national campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer will be the University of Texas Health Science Center – Cancer Treatment Research Center (CTRC). Team Draft will sit down with Dr. Wehbe and the rest of the UT lung cancer team and discuss the state of lung cancer in Southwest Texas. \nSince Chris and Keasha launched Team Draft at their wedding in November of 2011\, Team Draft has been on a mission to tackle cancer. Team Draft’s national campaign to raise public awareness and share the hope that now exists for those diagnosed with the disease has taken us to over 100 of the top cancer research and treatment facilities in North America. \n“Our hope is not only to positively impact research funding\, but to improve the quality of life for those affected by lung cancer\,” says Draft. “We aren’t fighting against lung cancer\, we’re fighting for people. That’s why we are leading this national campaign to change the face of lung cancer.” \nThe Facts About Lung Cancer\nFor decades\, the facts regarding lung cancer have been sobering:\n• Anyone can get lung cancer.\n• Over 60% of lung cancers are diagnosed in people who never smoked or in former smokers.1\n• Lung cancer surpassed breast cancer as the #1 cancer killer for women in 1987.2\n• Lung cancer kills more people than any other cancer3\n\, and takes more lives than breast\, cervical\, and prostate cancers . . . combined.\n4\n• The five year survival rate for lung cancer is just 16%—a rate that has changed very little since\nthe 1970’s.5 \nBut now there is HOPE! The use of state-of-the-art lung cancer screening techniques is reducing mortality rates by 20% in some patient groups6 while cutting-edge team-based\, multidisciplinary treatment procedures are improving the quality of life for lung cancer patients across the country. And thanks to advances in molecular tumor mutation testing\, researchers and treating physicians are developing effective personal lung cancer treatments designed to extent and\, ultimately\, save lives.7 The key to making even greater strides is funding\, but funding for lung cancer research is impacted by the “smoker’s disease” stigma.8 That’s why Team Draft is campaigning to change the face of lung cancer.

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Stadium: Atlanta Falcons
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta\, GA. Lung cancer survivor-advocates Jackie Archer (Northside Hospital) and Samantha Mixon (Piedmont Health) will represent Team Draft \, Thursday night at the Georgia Dome. The survivors will watch their hometown Atlanta Falcons take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. \nJackie Archer: \nTuesday\, August 2\, 2005\, at the age of 40 years and in seemingly excellent health\, an evening commuter came crashing into my SUV. I quickly phoned 911. Within moments there were lights and sirens coming from every direction.\nThe paramedics gently placed me onto a straight board and took me to the local hospital where I underwent a variety of tests to verify the extent of my injuries. By the time the tests were completed the ER room I had been assigned to was filled with my family and our family doctor\, Dr. Ayisha Gani. After a few hours of x-rays and tests the ER doctor told me he had “…good news and bad news”. He went on to say with surprise\, “The good news is that there are no injuries\, no fractures\, nothing whatsoever as a result of the car accident.” Everyone was relieved\, for a moment. “The bad news is there is something in your lower right lobe the size of my fist; we need to do some tests…” Dr. Gani\, my personal physician explained to me that she was admitting me for additional tests which would more than likely involve a biopsy the following day. \nhttps://www.teamdraft.org/survivorstories/jackie-archer-is-changing-the-face-of-lung-cancer/ \nSamantha Mixon: \nSamantha Mixon looks and feels great\, but she is fighting stage four lung cancer and all the assumptions that people make about her disease. \n“The first thing they ask is\, ‘Did you smoke?’ It’s annoying at this point\,” Mixon told 11Alive’s Jennifer Leslie. \nShe’s a non-smoker with no family history… \n\nSamantha Mixon is Changing thr Face of Lung Cancer \n\nThis Thursday’s game is just the latest in Team Draft’s A Survivor at Every Stadium initiative. Working with teams throughout the NFL\, Team Draft is leading this national effort to have lung cancer survivors\, attend games across the country. As part of Team Draft’s National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer\, the A Survivor at Every Stadium initiative is designed to raise awareness\, give hope to those battling the disease\, and shine a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nTeam Draft\, an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation\, is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The fact is\, anybody can get lung cancer. Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked–including Keasha Draft\, Jackie Archer and Samantha Mixon–are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. Team Draft is out to change all that. “If we can take away the stigma that says you have to be a smoker to get lung cancer\, we have a real chance to educate people about the true nature of the disease\,” explains Draft.

SUMMARY:Tackling Lung Cancer Screening at the Minnesota VA
DESCRIPTION:Minneapolis\, MN. November 2013\, the Minnesota VA joined seven other VA locations for the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) lung cancer screening pilot program. The nationwide screening program is committed to finding lung cancers early in their high-risk veteran population. \nVA Set to Begin CT Lung Cancer Screenings in Veterans After Success in Medical Trial \nPosted by Doug Karr \nThe United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is taking an active role in the early detection\, and ultimately\, treatment of lung cancer in veterans. Inspired by the success of the National Cancer Institute’s National Lung Screening Trial\, the VA is in the beginning stages of implementing CT scans. \nAs reported by DOTmed News\, the VA will start “phased implementation” of the CT screenings for lung cancer at six VA hospitals. In a statement sent to DOTmed\, the VA has yet to publicly announce which VA hospitals will participate or when the program will begin. \nMoreover\, the veterans who participate at the initial six VA hospitals will provide feedback that will allow the department to plan a system-wide program and how to best manage it. The VA wants to ensure that the entire scope of the program – from the screening itself to receiving a potential diagnosis – is handled in such a way that it alleviates veterans’ concerns instead of adding to it. \nThe National Cancer Institute’s National Lung Screening Trial which published its results in November 2010\, found that a low-dose helical or spiral CT scans were more successful at spotting lung cancer than chest x-rays. \nFurther\, the National Cancer Institute looked at 53\,454 “current or former heavy smokers” and found that with a CT scan\, there was a 20% reduction in deaths from lung cancer. \nBased off of the success of the National Lung Screening Trial\, the VA hopes to identify potentially high risk veterans who were current or former heavy smokers through early CT screenings. \nFor veterans\, in particular\, lung cancer is not solely linked to smoking. While on active duty\, many veterans were exposed to chemical agents\, toxins and other hazardous materials that could lead to lung cancer. One of the most common toxins active duty service members were exposed to was asbestos. \nOver the years\, many veterans from all branches\, were unintentionally exposed to asbestos while protecting their country. However\, Navy veterans who were stationed at shipyards\, built ships or served on ships were especially vulnerable to asbestos exposure. \nCommonly thought to cause mesothelioma\, asbestos exposure is linked to lung cancer. Couple asbestos exposure with heavy smoking\, many veterans are at an extreme risk for developing lung cancer. \nRead more: http://www.mesothelioma.com/blog/authors/doug/va-set-to-begin-ct-lung-cancer-screenings-in-veterans-after-success-in-medical-trial.htm#ixzz2xisaPCKw

The game between the Colorado Buffaloes and the Oregon State University Beavers will kickoff Team Draft’s A Survivor at Every College Stadium. \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nLeveraging our connections with the NCAA\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, we are arranging to have lung cancer survivors attend games at NCAA stadiums across the country during the last two months of the 2014 season. \nAs part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nSpecial thanks to CU Coach Kent Baer\, University of Colorado Football\, Covidien\, and the University of Colorado Cancer Center for helping make this experience possible. \nDonate Now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Stadium: Denver Broncos
DESCRIPTION:Denver\, CO. University of Colorado Cancer Center lung cancer survivor-advocates Susan Nunn and Jonathan Wilmot will represent Team Draft at Mile Stadium this Sunday. Susan and Jonathan will watch the Denver Broncos take on the Arizona Cardinals\, as part of our A Survivor at Every Stadium program with the NFL. \nNovember is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. In 2012\, Team Draft marked the occasion by launching our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nLeveraging our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, we arranged to have lung cancer survivors attend games at NFL stadiums across the country during the last two months of the 2012-2013 season. By the time the initiative concluded at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii\, more than 30 lung cancer survivors representing 30 cancer centers and nearly every NFL team had participated. Given the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, we have expanded it beyond the NFL to the NBA\, the NHL and MLS—and this year\, London\, UK! As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nSpecial thanks to the Denver Broncos\, Broncos DPE Jerry Butler\, and the University of Colorado Cancer Center for helping make this experience possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!
