SUMMARY:Samantha Mixon - 2017 Super Bowl Challenge Check Presentation - Piedmont Health
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta\, GA. Lung cancer survivor-advocate Samantha Mixon chose the Piedmont Health Cancer Center as her beneficiary of the funds that she raised during Team Draft’s 2017 Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge. \nFounded by Draft and his late wife Keasha\, who died of lung cancer in 2011 at the age of 38\, Team Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding through its Campaign To Change The Face Of Lung Cancer\, which is committed to shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The centerpiece of Team Draft’s Campaign is its annual Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge.\nAs Draft explains\, “the Super Bowl Challenge gives us a unique opportunity to use the overwhelming media coverage surrounding the Super Bowl as a platform to raise critical public awareness about lung cancer on an international level.  With the game as a backdrop\, we can use each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of lung cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.”  And Team Draft’s efforts are paying off. \n“The Super Bowl Challenge achieves amazing things in terms of public awareness and changing perceptions about lung cancer\,” says Dr. Ross Camidge\, the Director of Thoracic Oncology at Colorado University Cancer Center\, the cancer center where two of last year’s Super Bowl Challenge winners were treated. \nIn addition to raising critical public awareness\, the Super Bowl Challenge also raises funds for lung cancer organizations and treatment centers across North America.  Last year\, participants who raised more than $1\,000< during the Super Bowl Challenge were able to commit 50% of the funds they raised to a lung cancer organization or cancer center of their choice. \nThanks to the overwhelming success of our annual Super Bowl Challenge\, Team Draft is maintaining its commit to 50% if the survivors raise over $1\,000\, but if they raise over $5\,000\, their designated beneficiary will receive 80% with the remaining 20% going to support Team Draft’s mission to change the face of lung cancer. \nOf this aspect of the Super Bowl Challenge\, Dr. Camidge says\, “you need somebody working on the national level. You need somebody working on the local level. Everybody wins.” \nFor the survivors who participate\, the Super Bowl Challenge is so much more than just a fundraiser. \n“Team Draft has really helped boost our family’s spirits during this challenging time\,” says Dr. Lucy Kalanithi. In 2015\, Lucy and her husband\, Dr. Paul Kalanithi\, won Team Draft’s inaugural Super Bowl Challenge and were able to join Team Draft in Phoenix\, Arizona for Super Bowl 49.  Paul went on to write the bestselling memoir When Breath Becomes Air — a powerful and moving chronicle of his life and lung cancer journey — before passing away at the age of 37. \n2016 Super Bowl Challenge winner\, Kim Ringen says\, “As a lung cancer survivor\, I would highly recommend to anybody to put your hat in the ring because it is so uplifting to be associated with a group of people that are coming together to make a difference.” \nTo learn more about Team Draft’s 2017 Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge\, visit https://www.crowdrise.com/2017SuperBowlChallenge. \nSpecial thanks to the Jon Wilmot and the Wilmot Family\, NFL\, Astra Zeneca\, and all of our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible. \nAbout Team Draft  \nTeam Draft\, an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation\, is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.”  Despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, Team Draft is out to change all that. To learn more about Team Draft\, share your story\, or make a donation\, please visit www.teamdraft.org.

Not just an inspiration\, but a light\, and a force that led the way with a beautiful\, sweet smile and bright shining eyes that both belied the pure steel of her strength and determination. \nStrong is too pale\, too shallow and too small of a word to describe Keasha’s vibrancy… Quite simply\, she was ferocious. She fiercely held onto life\, and love with a forcefulness that was absolutely awe-inspiring and completely breathtaking. \nBorn on May 13\, 1973 to Tommy and Gail Rutledge in Anderson\, South Carolina\, she was always a shining star while she attended the Palmetto schools of Anderson District One\, and graduated a year early with honors. Keasha was a faithful member of her family church New Prospect Baptist Church of Williamston\, SC. Always active and ambitious\, Keasha participated in many organizations from National Honor Society to earning the title of captain on the varsity cheerleading squad. She was known for her phenomenal dancing ability\, although her track and field accomplishments were stellar also\, as she placed first in the high jump at the state meet every year from seventh through twelfth grade. She still holds the school record for high jump. As a Clemson University student\, she was a well-loved classmate\, dancer for the Rallycats and was inducted into the Lambda Theta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority\, Inc. in the Spring of 1992. Keasha received her Bachelors of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Clemson University in 1995. She began her career in engineering for Cutler-Hammer. Keasha was an NBA dancer and beloved teammate for the Charlotte Hornets Honeybees. She began working as a pharmaceutical sales representative for Sanofi-Aventis in Charlotte and transferred to Atlanta\, Georgia where she worked until her illness transpired. The survivors\, and their spouses\, joined former Carolina Panther Chris Draft and other Panthers Alumni on the field before the game\, prior to heading up to the suites to watch the Carolina Panthers defeat the Houston Texans. #PanthersAlumniDay #KeepPounding \nThe Team Draft Survivor at Every Stadium gave us a chance to celebrate survivorship in a very unique and amazing way. We got to mingle with other Panther Alumni at the Championship Village.  We were provided a wonderful meal too.  The Top Cats came through Championship Village and we had our pictures taken with them.  We were also able to take a picture with Sir Purr.  After we ate\, we were escorted to the field via an underground tunnel.  I was totally amazed with the fact we actually got to walk through the same tunnel the players walk through. ~ Stuart & Susan Beam \n \nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor Series initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nOur Survivor at Every Stadium\, leverages our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players with our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country. DESCRIPTION:View Photos \nDetroit\, MI. Lung cancer survivor-advocate Matt Riga represented Team Draft at Ford Field on Sunday afternoon. Matt and his family watched the Detroit Lions lose a close game to the Atlanta Falcons with Team Draft co-founder and Atlanta Falcons Legend\, Chris Draft. \nMatt was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer last year as a 34 year old non-smoker. Matt is a rock star of a fighter and will not stop! We are so grateful for the support we have around us and are so proud to now be lung cancer advocates to help find a cure to this disease! \nIf you have lungs\, you can get lung cancer. 1 in 15 Americans will be diagnosed with lung cancer in their lifetimes. More people die of this disease each year over colon\, breast and prostate cancer combined\, yet it is seriously underfunded because of the stigma. Thankfully there are so many breakthroughs and so much hope on the horizon\, but these ideas need to be funded! ~ The Riga Family\n \nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor Series initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nOur Survivor at Every Stadium\, leverages our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players with our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country.
