SUMMARY:UT Health Science Center -- Cancer Treatment Research Center (CTRC)
DESCRIPTION:San Antonio\, TX. The latest stop on Team Draft’s national campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer will be the University of Texas Health Science Center – Cancer Treatment Research Center (CTRC). Team Draft will sit down with Dr. Wehbe and the rest of the UT lung cancer team and discuss the state of lung cancer in Southwest Texas. \nSince Chris and Keasha launched Team Draft at their wedding in November of 2011\, Team Draft has been on a mission to tackle cancer. Team Draft’s national campaign to raise public awareness and share the hope that now exists for those diagnosed with the disease has taken us to over 100 of the top cancer research and treatment facilities in North America. \n“Our hope is not only to positively impact research funding\, but to improve the quality of life for those affected by lung cancer\,” says Draft. “We aren’t fighting against lung cancer\, we’re fighting for people. That’s why we are leading this national campaign to change the face of lung cancer.” \nThe Facts About Lung Cancer\nFor decades\, the facts regarding lung cancer have been sobering:\n• Anyone can get lung cancer.\n• Over 60% of lung cancers are diagnosed in people who never smoked or in former smokers.1\n• Lung cancer surpassed breast cancer as the #1 cancer killer for women in 1987.2\n• Lung cancer kills more people than any other cancer3\n\, and takes more lives than breast\, cervical\, and prostate cancers . . . combined.\n4\n• The five year survival rate for lung cancer is just 16%—a rate that has changed very little since\nthe 1970’s.5 \nBut now there is HOPE! The use of state-of-the-art lung cancer screening techniques is reducing mortality rates by 20% in some patient groups6 while cutting-edge team-based\, multidisciplinary treatment procedures are improving the quality of life for lung cancer patients across the country. And thanks to advances in molecular tumor mutation testing\, researchers and treating physicians are developing effective personal lung cancer treatments designed to extent and\, ultimately\, save lives.7 The key to making even greater strides is funding\, but funding for lung cancer research is impacted by the “smoker’s disease” stigma.8 That’s why Team Draft is campaigning to change the face of lung cancer.

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Stadium: Atlanta Falcons
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta\, GA. Lung cancer survivor-advocates Jackie Archer (Northside Hospital) and Samantha Mixon (Piedmont Health) will represent Team Draft \, Thursday night at the Georgia Dome. The survivors will watch their hometown Atlanta Falcons take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. \nJackie Archer: \nTuesday\, August 2\, 2005\, at the age of 40 years and in seemingly excellent health\, an evening commuter came crashing into my SUV. I quickly phoned 911. Within moments there were lights and sirens coming from every direction.\nThe paramedics gently placed me onto a straight board and took me to the local hospital where I underwent a variety of tests to verify the extent of my injuries. By the time the tests were completed the ER room I had been assigned to was filled with my family and our family doctor\, Dr. Ayisha Gani. After a few hours of x-rays and tests the ER doctor told me he had “…good news and bad news”. He went on to say with surprise\, “The good news is that there are no injuries\, no fractures\, nothing whatsoever as a result of the car accident.” Everyone was relieved\, for a moment. “The bad news is there is something in your lower right lobe the size of my fist; we need to do some tests…” Dr. Gani\, my personal physician explained to me that she was admitting me for additional tests which would more than likely involve a biopsy the following day. \nhttps://www.teamdraft.org/survivorstories/jackie-archer-is-changing-the-face-of-lung-cancer/ \nSamantha Mixon: \nSamantha Mixon looks and feels great\, but she is fighting stage four lung cancer and all the assumptions that people make about her disease. \n“The first thing they ask is\, ‘Did you smoke?’ It’s annoying at this point\,” Mixon told 11Alive’s Jennifer Leslie. \nShe’s a non-smoker with no family history… \n\nSamantha Mixon is Changing thr Face of Lung Cancer \n\nThis Thursday’s game is just the latest in Team Draft’s A Survivor at Every Stadium initiative. Working with teams throughout the NFL\, Team Draft is leading this national effort to have lung cancer survivors\, attend games across the country. As part of Team Draft’s National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer\, the A Survivor at Every Stadium initiative is designed to raise awareness\, give hope to those battling the disease\, and shine a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nTeam Draft\, an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation\, is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The fact is\, anybody can get lung cancer. Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked–including Keasha Draft\, Jackie Archer and Samantha Mixon–are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. Team Draft is out to change all that. “If we can take away the stigma that says you have to be a smoker to get lung cancer\, we have a real chance to educate people about the true nature of the disease\,” explains Draft.

SUMMARY:Tackling Lung Cancer Screening at the Minnesota VA
DESCRIPTION:Minneapolis\, MN. November 2013\, the Minnesota VA joined seven other VA locations for the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) lung cancer screening pilot program. The nationwide screening program is committed to finding lung cancers early in their high-risk veteran population. \nVA Set to Begin CT Lung Cancer Screenings in Veterans After Success in Medical Trial \nPosted by Doug Karr \nThe United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is taking an active role in the early detection\, and ultimately\, treatment of lung cancer in veterans. Inspired by the success of the National Cancer Institute’s National Lung Screening Trial\, the VA is in the beginning stages of implementing CT scans. \nAs reported by DOTmed News\, the VA will start “phased implementation” of the CT screenings for lung cancer at six VA hospitals. In a statement sent to DOTmed\, the VA has yet to publicly announce which VA hospitals will participate or when the program will begin. \nMoreover\, the veterans who participate at the initial six VA hospitals will provide feedback that will allow the department to plan a system-wide program and how to best manage it. The VA wants to ensure that the entire scope of the program – from the screening itself to receiving a potential diagnosis – is handled in such a way that it alleviates veterans’ concerns instead of adding to it. \nThe National Cancer Institute’s National Lung Screening Trial which published its results in November 2010\, found that a low-dose helical or spiral CT scans were more successful at spotting lung cancer than chest x-rays. \nFurther\, the National Cancer Institute looked at 53\,454 “current or former heavy smokers” and found that with a CT scan\, there was a 20% reduction in deaths from lung cancer. \nBased off of the success of the National Lung Screening Trial\, the VA hopes to identify potentially high risk veterans who were current or former heavy smokers through early CT screenings. \nFor veterans\, in particular\, lung cancer is not solely linked to smoking. While on active duty\, many veterans were exposed to chemical agents\, toxins and other hazardous materials that could lead to lung cancer. One of the most common toxins active duty service members were exposed to was asbestos. \nOver the years\, many veterans from all branches\, were unintentionally exposed to asbestos while protecting their country. However\, Navy veterans who were stationed at shipyards\, built ships or served on ships were especially vulnerable to asbestos exposure. \nCommonly thought to cause mesothelioma\, asbestos exposure is linked to lung cancer. Couple asbestos exposure with heavy smoking\, many veterans are at an extreme risk for developing lung cancer. \nRead more: http://www.mesothelioma.com/blog/authors/doug/va-set-to-begin-ct-lung-cancer-screenings-in-veterans-after-success-in-medical-trial.htm#ixzz2xisaPCKw

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Stadium: Denver Broncos
DESCRIPTION:Denver\, CO. University of Colorado Cancer Center lung cancer survivor-advocates Susan Nunn and Jonathan Wilmot will represent Team Draft at Mile Stadium this Sunday. Susan and Jonathan will watch the Denver Broncos take on the Arizona Cardinals\, as part of our A Survivor at Every Stadium program with the NFL. \nNovember is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. In 2012\, Team Draft marked the occasion by launching our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nLeveraging our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, we arranged to have lung cancer survivors attend games at NFL stadiums across the country during the last two months of the 2012-2013 season. By the time the initiative concluded at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii\, more than 30 lung cancer survivors representing 30 cancer centers and nearly every NFL team had participated. Given the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, we have expanded it beyond the NFL to the NBA\, the NHL and MLS—and this year\, London\, UK! As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nSpecial thanks to the Denver Broncos\, Broncos DPE Jerry Butler\, and the University of Colorado Cancer Center for helping make this experience possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:Lung Cancer Survivors will Rise Up and Run with the Atlanta Falcons
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta\, GA. Lung cancer survivor-advocates Linda Wortman and Kristen Carlton will run in the Atlanta Falcons Rise Up and Run 5K Saturday morning. They will be cheered on by Team Draft Co-Founder and Former Atlanta Falcon Chris Draft and Kiersten Dickson\, a local 20 year old lung cancer survivor. \nLinda Wortman: \nMy name is Linda Wortman and I’m a nonsmoker. I flew for Northwest Airlines for 35 years. I began my career in 1973. January 11\, 2008\, I was diagnosed with non small cell Lung Cancer. I never realized the unknown devastating health risks associated with second hand smoke! Do you? Two years prior to my diagnosis\, I questioned\, Do I have SARS or TB?… My local doctors office would just send me home with a ZPac Rx\, for my annoying cough & choking symptoms. Also saying\, “You don’t need a chest x-ray”! … My physical exam at Mayo Clinic is where I finally found the answers.\nThanks to the grace of God\, my loving husband Jerry and wonderful medical care at Mayo Clinic\, I am a lung cancer survivor. \n\nLinda Wortman is Changing the Face of Lung Cancer \n\nKristen Carlton:\nI was diagnosed with Stage 1 Lung Cancer in July 2013. I had no symptoms\, but my tumor showed up on a CT done for kidney stones. On Aug 14\, 2013\, I had my tumor and left lower lobe removed. Fortunately\, my cancer was caught early and had not spread to my lymph nodes. Now 11-weeks post surgery\, I am training to run my third half-marathon. I am determined to finish. I am also determined to help raise awareness for this horrible disease. \n\nLung cancer survivor takes on Atlanta Half Marathon \n\nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer! www.teamdraft.org

This was a call that would set into motion a new battle that no one ever thinks is waiting in the midst for them\, ready to rear its ugly head if life calls upon it.\nRead more: https://www.teamdraft.org/survivorstories/fawn-lee-is-changing-the-face-of-lung-cancer/ \nDon Stranathan: \nI was diagnosed with Stage 4 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer in June of 2009. I have had numerous treatments of radiation and chemotherapy for the lung cancer\, and six cycles of Genzar for metastasis to my liver. I am one of the fortunate few because only 16.8 % ever reach the five year mark. I am stable today because of the targeted therapy pill Tarceva that I have been taking for almost five years.\nAll through my journey I have kept a positive attitude\, good nutrition and plenty of exercise. I try to live my life by spiritual principles. I feel they all play an important part in my recovery and the reason I am still above ground. The bad news is that I have cancer\, the good news is that cancer has taught me to live life to the fullest. I never allow cancer to define me. I rarely miss an opportunity to hike\, bike\, or do anything that strengthens my immune system and keeps me out in nature. \nIn October 2011 I met Penny Blume\, the love of my life\, on a lung cancer support community on Inspire. Penny left this earth on 1-21-2014 after battling small cell lung cancer\, for the previous 32 months. Penny and I spent our time together traveling back and forth from New York to California. She passed at my home in Santa Rosa\, CA\, after trying one last clinical trial at Stanford Cancer Center.\nPenny and I turned to each other for emotional support to battle our cancers and fell in love. It was after a couple of months of texting and chatting on social media that we decided to meet. Penny flew to California for her first visit in January of 2012\, and the rest is history. \nRead more:\nhttp://abcnews.go.com/Health/couple-share-lung-cancer-undying-love/story?id=17231220 \nThrough our Survivor at Every Rink initiative\, we are working with all 30 NHL teams to have lung cancer survivors from local cancer centers and their guests attend one of the team’s home games as a part of the NHL’s national initiative Hockey Fights Cancer! \nOur goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local and national level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of lung cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. This year\, we hope to increase our ability to achieve those goals by adding the Super Bowl Challenge\, which will build on the success of our established Survivor Series by using the games at the heart of that initiative to create buzz for the Super Bowl Challenge and\, in turn\, funds for research and awareness. \nSpecial thanks to the San Jose Sharks\, Stanford Cancer Institute\, Kaiser Santa Rosa and of the Team Draft supporters for making this experience possible. \nDonate now to support the national campaign to change the face of lung cancer! www.teamdraft.org

The Golbons will watch the San Francisco 49ers take on their NFL West rival\, St. Louis Rams. \nMolly Golbon: \nMolly Golbon doesn’t take much for granted these days.\nThe 39-year old married working mom of two knows life can take unexpected turns. For her\, it came with a pain in her throat\, tiredness\, and a cough that wouldn’t go away.\n“I went in for an MRI\, and that’s when they found there was something on the MRI\,” Golbon recalled. That something turned out to be lung cancer. “I think when they told me it was lung cancer\, I thought it can’t be. It can’t be. It’s probably bronchitis or pneumonia\, it’s not that.”\nUnfortunately\, it was.\nUntil her diagnosis\, Golbon\, like many people\, thought only smokers got lung cancer.\nRead more: http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/health/Menlo-Park-Woman-Helping-to-Change-the-Stigma-of-Lung-Cancer-254237991.html \nNovember is Lung Cancer Awareness Month. DESCRIPTION:East Rutherford\, NJ. Lung cancer survivors Abraham Almanza and Kathy O’Brien will join NFL Ambassador Chris Draft in the Commissioner Goodell’s suite for Monday Night Football. The survivors will watch the New York Giants take on the Indianapolis Colts\, in the first November Monday Night game on the season. \nAbraham Almanza: \nIn 1998\, I was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer at the age of 15. I would later turn 16 in the hospital not knowing if I would live to see my 17th birthday. \nRead more: https://www.teamdraft.org/survivorstories/abraham-and-yolanda-almanza-are-changing-the-face-of-lung-cancer/ \nKathy O’Brien: \nKathy O’Brien of Westfield\, New Jersey\, thought her eyes were playing tricks on her. She was driving her three kids to school two years ago when she noticed that the stop sign was blurry. Her eye doctor sent her to a retina specialist\, who spotted six tumors in her left eye and four in her right. The next day — after a battery of tests including an MRI and a CT scan — Kathy was in an oncologist’s office\, blindsided by news that was beyond shocking: She had stage IV lung cancer. “Never in a million years did I think I’d hear something like that\,” says Kathy\, who had recently run her fifth marathon and had become certified as a Bar Method exercise instructor. “It seemed impossible because I had never smoked.” \nNovember is Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
