SUMMARY:Lunch & Learn at NFL Headquarters
DESCRIPTION:View Photos \nNew York\, NY. A select group of lung cancer Survivors\, Caregivers\, Doctors and Health Professionals represented Team Draft at the NFL Headquarters on Monday afternoon. The luncheon\, hosted by the NFL Legends Community and CDFF\, allowed the group to share their individuals stories\, discuss the state of lung cancer and learn more about the NFL’s Crucial Catch Initiative. #TEAM #Tacklinglungcancer #LCSM \n \nTeam Draft is an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation created by nationally recognized health advocate and former NFL linebacker\, Chris Draft\, and his late wife\, Keasha\, during Keasha’s year-long struggle with lung cancer.  Their hope was that Keasha’s valiant fight to dance\, smile and live would give hope\, comfort and inspiration to the patients\, caregivers and healthcare providers who are battling the disease every day. \nWhile attending Clemson University\, Keasha was a member of the Rally Cat’s dance squad before graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering.  After graduation\, Keasha worked as an engineer while dancing for the NBA’s Charlotte Hornets before working in the pharmaceutical industry.  She was an energetic\, vibrant young woman who had never smoked when she was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung Cancer in December 2010.  At the time\, her only “symptom” was a slight shortness of breath a few days earlier.  Despite the diagnosis and knowing the long odds they faced\, Keasha and Chris decided to fight back.  On November 27\, 2011\, standing side-by-side\, they launched Team Draft at their wedding.  One month later\, Keasha lost her courageous fight and died at the age of 38. \nTeam Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.”  The fact is anybody can get lung cancer.  Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked—including Keasha—are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases.  Team Draft is out to change all that by using the unique platform available to Chris as a former NFL player and nationally recognized community leader and health advocate to lead a National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer—a campaign that has taken us to more than 130 of the top cancer treatment and research centers in the United States and Canada. \nSpecial thanks to the NFL Legends community\, Kiyanna Brown\, and Tracey Pearlman for making this opportunity possible. \n

SUMMARY:Tackling Lungs Flag Football Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:Greenville\, SC. Lung cancer advocate and Brashier Middle College Charter high school student\, Elizabeth Owens\, coordinated the first annual Tackling Lungs Flag Football tournament. Elizabeth’s Dad\, Rick Owens\, is a four year lung cancer survivor and the leader of the Upstate’s first lung cancer support group at St. Francis Bon Secours Cancer Center. The Tackling Lungs tournament raised funds and awareness to support Team Draft’s mission to change the face of lung cancer. \nAll five teams played four games and enjoyed a day of fun and competition. The Purple Cobras were the top team\, and were recognized with the first Neil Caesar Award. \n \n  \nAll proceeds from this event support The Chris Draft Family Foundation’s Team Draft initiative. \nTeam Draft is an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation created by nationally recognized health advocate and former NFL linebacker\, Chris Draft\, and his late wife\, Keasha\, during Keasha’s year-long struggle with lung cancer. SUMMARY:Matt Arensdorf Attended Super Bowl 52
DESCRIPTION:View Photos  \nWe are so happy and thankful for the money we were able to raise through the Super Bowl Challenge! We are pumped to be going to the Super Bowl!! \nThe Super Bowl challenge is an amazing way to not only raise funds for lung cancer research but bring much-needed awareness to the disease. Getting to go to the super bowl is the cherry on top! We are incredibly excited for this opportunity and can’t thank everyone enough who helped us get here. ~  Matt Arensdorf  \nDenver\, CO. Lung cancer survivor Matt Arensdorf and\, his wife\, Jen are heading to Minnesota for Super Bowl LII on February 4\, 2018 and the 2018 Taste of the NFL in St. Paul\, Minnesota on February 3\, 2018. Matt earned a trip to the Super Bowl and the Taste of the NFL by being one for the top fundraisers in our 2018 Lung Cancer Super Bowl Challenge. Team Arensdorf will be able to continue raising funds for the Lung Cancer Colorado Fund at the University of Colorado until the day after the Super Bowl. \n \nLife couldn’t have been any better in early 2016. My wife\, Jen\, and I had just celebrated the birth of our daughter\, Grace. I had an amazing wife and a perfect little girl. To put a cherry on top the Denver Broncos had just won the super bowl. Jen and I\, like all new parents\, were navigating the uncharted waters of parenting. Trying to figure out all the little things like how do we get Grace to sleep through the night and is she eating enough? We were also making plans for our future with our new baby. Picking out a daycare\, setting up her college fund\, determining how may siblings she’d have and how close in age we wanted them to be. Then all those questions and plans were put on hold. ~ Read more about Matt Arensdorf  \nFounded by Draft and his late wife Keasha\, who died of lung cancer in 2011 at the age of 38\, Team Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding through its Campaign To Change The Face Of Lung Cancer\, which is committed to shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The centerpiece of Team Draft’s Campaign is its annual Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge. \nAs Draft explains\, “the Super Bowl Challenge gives us a unique opportunity to use the overwhelming media coverage surrounding the Super Bowl as a platform to raise critical public awareness about lung cancer on an international level.  With the game as a backdrop\, we can use each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of lung cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.”  And Team Draft’s efforts are paying off. \n“The Super Bowl Challenge achieves amazing things in terms of public awareness and changing perceptions about lung cancer\,” says Dr. Ross Camidge\, the Director of Thoracic Oncology at Colorado University Cancer Center\, the cancer center where two of last year’s Super Bowl Challenge winners were treated. \nIn addition to raising critical public awareness\, the Super Bowl Challenge also raises funds for lung cancer organizations and treatment centers across North America.  Last year\, participants who raised more than $1\,000< during the Super Bowl Challenge were able to commit 50% of the funds they raised to a lung cancer organization or cancer center of their choice. \nThanks to the overwhelming success of our annual Super Bowl Challenge\, Team Draft is maintaining its commit to 50% if the survivors raise over $1\,000\, but if they raise over $5\,000\, their designated beneficiary will receive 80% with the remaining 20% going to support Team Draft’s mission to change the face of lung cancer. \n \nOf this aspect of the Super Bowl Challenge\, Dr. Camidge says\, “you need somebody working on the national level. Linda’s efforts were celebrated at a reception hosted by The Mayo Clinic Thoracic Team at Dooley’s Pub in Rochester\, MN. \n \nThis is a dream come true.  For the past 10 years\, it has been my goal to raise awareness of lung cancer.  And now\, by winning the Team Draft Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge\, I feel it is possible!!  We can provide much needed money for lung cancer research at Mayo Clinic and save more lungs and more lives! ~Linda Wortman \nHere’s Linda’s story\, in her own words:  “In 2008\, I received a phone call that changed the course of my life.  For 35 years\, I worked as a flight attendant.  I was preparing to depart from Minneapolis for Amsterdam when my physician\, whom I had seen just 2 days before for my annual physical\, called and requested that I return to Mayo Clinic immediately because of something he saw on my CT scan. \nSo I returned to Mayo. Sitting in his office looking at x-ray images of my lungs\, time froze as my physician said\, ‘You have lung cancer.’ I snapped at him: “Doctor\, you have the wrong person!  I have never smoked!”  That was the day I realized anyone with lungs can get lung cancer.” \nAfter successful surgery at Mayo Clinic\, and with the support of her loving husband\, Jerry\, Linda battled through\, and is now on a mission to break the stereotype that lung cancer is only for smokers.  Linda set a goal to raise awareness about lung cancer and to share with people around the world that there is quality of life after a cancer diagnosis.  Since 2012\, and with most of her left lung missing\, Linda completed a 5K race in all 50 states\, a 10K race on four continents\, and in August of 2016\, she climbed to the summit of Kilimanjaro\, the largest mountain in Africa\, and the fourth tallest peak in the world. \nIn 2014\, Linda and Jerry co-founded the non-profit organization Wortman Lung Cancer   Foundation.  Through this foundation\, the Wortmans host Running Lungs Run/Walk events and the #First2Burst Lung Challenge to raise desperately-needed funds for lung cancer research. \nLinda has always been an example of her favorite saying\, “If you can imagine it\, you can achieve it; if you can dream it\, you can become it.” Linda dreamed of being one of Team Draft’s 2018 Lung Cancer Survivor Super Bowl Challenge winners and now she is.  This will enable her to continue spreading her positive message and raising funds to save lungs and lives through research. \nJanuary 11\, 2018 marks the 10-year anniversary of my lung cancer surgery and of being a survivor.  I am honored to be a 2018 Super Bowl Challenge winner and I want to be a strong advocate and positive presence representing all survivors throughout the remaining weeks of the Challenge.  I’m looking forward to participating in a number of events during Super Bowl week\, especially the Team Draft Family Foundation Survivors’ dinner.  Please join me and survivors from around Minnesota as we band together to blow lung cancer away!! ~ Linda

SUMMARY:Anne Phillips Attended the College Football National Championship
DESCRIPTION:View Photos \nIt’s hard to know to what to say about all this other than we are just so excited! With the short timeline between the end of the contest and the national championships we haven’t had much time to process. Watching that Rose Bowl game and knowing we were going to see the winner play live was great. And Georgia vs. Alabama? What a match up! ~ Anne Phillips  \nAtlanta\, GA. Denver\, CO lung cancer survivor Anne Phillips and\, her husband\, Ryan attended the 2018 College Football National Championship in Atlanta\, GA on January 8\, 2018.  Anne and Ryan watched the University of Alabama Crimson Tide defeat the University of Georgia Bulldogs in overtime at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. \nAs an avid college football fan there is no other sporting event I would rather attend than the National Championship game. And winning a trip to the game by raising money for IASLC makes the event much more meaningful. Every dollar spent on lung cancer research extends peoples’s lives. My wife and I are here today because of this research\, and I am extremely proud of my wife for advancing the cause and in her bravery in living with lung cancer. ~ Ryan Phillips \nAnne earned a trip to the National Championship by being the fourth highest fundraiser in the 2018 Lung Cancer Survivor Super Bowl Challenge. Team SuperAnne will be able to continue to raise funds for the IASLC (International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer) until February 5\, 2018. \n \n \nIn May of 2015\, I had a seizure and collapsed one morning before taking my young children to school. Within 24 hours\, the doctors suspected I had lung cancer. There was a tumor in the upper lobe of my left lung and multiple metastasis in my brain.  Two days later I had brain surgery to remove the largest brain tumor\, the one that caused the seizure\, and the oncologist sent material from the tumor to be genomically tested. Tumor testing showed that I had an EGFR mutation which could be treated with a targeted-therapy drug called Tarceva. The drug worked well for almost 2 years before my cancer progressed and metastasized to a lymph node. Fortunately\, a new therapy that targeted both mutations had recently been developed\, and I was able to switch to Tagrisso earlier this year. \nPeople frequently think that I am “cured” because I don’t look like I have cancer. The reality is that I have cancer now and I always will. ~ Read more about Anne Phillips \nFounded by Draft and his late wife Keasha\, who died of lung cancer in 2011 at the age of 38\, Team Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding through its Campaign To Change The Face Of Lung Cancer\, which is committed to shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The centerpiece of Team Draft’s Campaign is its annual Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge. You need somebody working on the local level. Everybody wins.” \nFor the survivors who participate\, the Super Bowl Challenge is so much more than just a fundraiser. \n“Team Draft has really helped boost our family’s spirits during this challenging time\,” says Dr. Lucy Kalanithi. In 2015\, Lucy and her husband\, Dr. Paul Kalanithi\, won Team Draft’s inaugural Super Bowl Challenge and were able to join Team Draft in Phoenix\, Arizona for Super Bowl 49.  Paul went on to write the bestselling memoir When Breath Becomes Air — a powerful and moving chronicle of his life and lung cancer journey — before passing away at the age of 37. \n2016 Super Bowl Challenge winner\, Kim Ringen says\, “As a lung cancer survivor\, I would highly recommend to anybody to put your hat in the ring because it is so uplifting to be associated with a group of people that are coming together to make a difference.” \nTo learn more about Team Draft’s 2018 Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge\, visit https://www.crowdrise.com/2018SuperBowlChallenge \nSpecial thanks to NFL\, Astra Zeneca\, and all of our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible. \nAbout Team Draft\nTeam Draft\, an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation\, is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.”  Despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, Team Draft is out to change all that. Sign up now! \nTeam Brausen \nMy name is Gary Brausen and I am honored and excited to represent A Breath of Hope Lung Foundation (ABOHLF) and Team Draft in the 2018 Super Bowl Challenge.  I proudly and currently serve on the board of directors and medical research team for ABOHLF\, a Minnesota based organization dedicated to lung cancer.  Our lofty but achievable fundraiser goal of $20\,000.00 will benefit both organizations with 80% of the dollars going to ABOHLF once $5000 is reached and 20% benefitting the Chris Draft Family Foundation.  The dollars will be used to fund cutting edge cures for lung cancer\, to raise awareness and to support patients and families. \nHelping me with this event is Team Brausen\, a forceful and impactful group of friends\, family and colleagues who supported me\, my wife Rosey and two boys Bennett and Alec as we navigated through a stage 3B lung cancer diagnosis in 2011.Our 2018 Super Bowl Challenge centers around a single word\, “Hope”\, something all of us could use a lot more of these days. Here is our story. \nIn late November of 2010\, I was playing hockey three mornings a week\, coaching my son’s hockey team and was arguably in the best physical condition of my life. I had just turned 50 and was feeling fantastic. I prided myself on getting enough rest\, watching what I ate and getting some form of exercise every day. I was the poster child as to how to live a healthy life. I also never smoked. NEVER. \nThen it all started. I first noticed a dry cough while yelling at our hockey practices. What followed was rapid and unexplained weight loss and a significant degradation in my strength and energy. After stepping down as hockey coach and putting off necessary business trips\, I decided to put my fear aside and figure out what was going on. After several appointments with primary care physicians\, multiple courses of antibiotics and worsening symptoms\, I had enough and demanded a chest x-ray. \nOn March 15\, 2011\, I received the phone call that changed my life forever. The voice on the other end was my pulmonologist and the first thing he said to me was\, “I am sorry Mr. Brausen\, you have lung cancer.” I could not believe that me\, a non-smoker\, an athlete and a hockey player for 40+ years could have lung cancer. At that time\, I was like most other people in thinking that lung cancer only affected smokers. How very wrong I was. \nFollow on scans and biopsies indicated that I was stage 3B and that the cancer was aggressive but confined to my left lung. On April 7th 2011\, I had the diseased lung removed and we immediately asked\, “Did you get it all?” The surgeon said he could not\, that the surgical margins were positive and that the cancer had invaded my vascular spaces. I was tested for all of the genetic markers at the time and did not qualify for any of them. My oncologist devised a “kitchen sink” treatment plan consisting of chemotherapy and radiation with the purpose of extending my life. There was no plan B in case the treatment did not work. No more bullets in the gun. \nThree different oncologists considered my case terminal and this dismal prognosis was communicated to my family and friends. Doctors asked me questions such as\, “How do you plan to spend your final days?”\, “Are your affairs in order?”\, “Have you taken a recent family photo?” I was told that I most likely had no more than a year to live\, two at the very most. Unbeknownst to me\, my best friend worked on his eulogy for my funeral and planned a golf outing that was meant to be one last hurrah for me. \nMy treatment concluded in October of 2011\, have been cancer free for the 6 ½ years since my surgery and considered cured. Yes\, by the sheer grace of God and with the help of some of the very best cancer practitioners in the world\, cancer did not win. \nLung cancer 5 year survival rate has been stuck at around 17% for far too long\, claims the lives of more than 160\,000 Americans each year and is more deadly than breast\, colon\, prostate and kidney cancers COMBINED. Despite these depressing statistics\, there is hope on the horizon for this disease\, hope in the form of genetically targeted and immunotherapies\, hope in the form of earlier detection and hope in the form of increased awareness in the general public and media. There is certainly much more to be done\, we all know that\, but the truth is that there is more hope today than ever before for lung cancer patients and I believe that we are the verge of something very significant. \nPlease join Team Brausen\, A Breath of Hope Lung Foundation and Team Draft in our 2018 Super Bowl Challenge to raise research dollars\, awareness and ultimately hope for all present and future lung cancer patients. \nSpecial thanks to the A Breath of Hope Foundation\, Minnesota Vikings\, Chicago Bears\, NFL and all of our Team Draft supporters for helping make this event possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

Both survivors shared their journeys with lung cancer and their clinical trials at Moffitt Cancer Center. The interview will air at 4pm on ABC Tampa’s The Now. \n \nIt’s wonderful to see people such as you\, who are so passionate in their mission to help fund the necessary research to ultimately eradicate lung cancer. Showing the world that a lung cancer diagnosis is no longer a short term death sentence because of the findings of the research is the key to increasing the funding for continued research\, from both governmental units and from corporate and individuals. \n\nI will continue my efforts\, especially in advocating for Moffitt with our Florida legislature and with my friends and clients. SUMMARY:National Lung Cancer Roundtable Brings Together Patients\, Organizations\, and Clinicians for First Annual Meeting
DESCRIPTION:National Lung Cancer Roundtable Brings Together Patients\, Organizations\, and Clinicians for First Annual Meeting\nFormer NFL Player Christ Draft is Keynote Speaker\n\n\n\nBy bringing together experts across professional disciplines and patient advocacy groups\, interested parties from payors/insurance companies\, research funding agencies\, and industry\, we will articulate the needed knowledge and resources and define a pathway to tackle the number one cause of cancer death in the United States \n\nDecember 11\, 2017– The National Lung Cancer Roundtable holds its inaugural meeting on December 11-12\, 2017 in Bethesda\, Md.\, the first major meeting for a new nationwide coalition of organizations committed to addressing the challenges of moving lung cancer screening into the mainstream. The Roundtable\, launched in March 2017\, currently includes approximately 65 organizational members\, among them clinical professionals\, researchers\, lung cancer advocates and patients\, healthcare organizations and cancer centers\, insurers\, and government agencies. \nThe first annual meeting will feature keynote speaker Chris Draft\, a former NFL player who launched Team Draft in 2011 with his wife Keasha\, who died of lung cancer. The meeting will: provide updates on the work so far and create a workplan for 2018; engage NLCRT Members to strive to reduce the incidence of and mortality from lung cancer; and showcase all aspects of the NLCRT and its membership through plenary and breakout sessions. Sessions include lung cancer screening implementation\, provider engagement and outreach\, tobacco cessation in the context of lung cancer screening\, shared decision-making\, and optimal therapy. \n“Whatever one’s connection to lung cancer\, whether involved in research\, clinical medicine\, public health\, or advocacy\, no one has a greater understanding of the impact of that work than the patient\,” said “K” (Karen) Latzka\, lung cancer survivor. “Within the patient community are passionate\, intelligent\, and caring individuals just waiting to take part in this important work\, and I’m honored to be at the Roundtable as their representative.” \n“By bringing together experts across professional disciplines and patient advocacy groups\, interested parties from payors/insurance companies\, research funding agencies\, and industry\, we will articulate the needed knowledge and resources and define a pathway to tackle the number one cause of cancer death in the United States\,” said Ella Kazerooni\, M.D.\, professor of radiology at the University of Michigan and chair of the National Lung Cancer Roundtable. “By working together\, rather than independently\, we will make greater and faster progress in reducing the burden of this terrible disease.” \n“It is an honor to give the keynote speech at The American Cancer Society’s first National Lung Cancer Roundtable conference\,” said Mr. Draft. “My wife\, Keasha\, was diagnosed with lung cancer in December 2010\, and unfortunately passed in December 2011. From that time\, I have witnessed tremendous innovations in lung cancer with respect to awareness\, detection\, treatment\, research and survivorship. We are on the cusp of drastically changing the survival rate in lung cancer\, so I believe it’s a perfect time to convene the thought leaders in lung cancer and figure out how we can make a larger impact together moving forward.” \n“I personally know how critical early detection is for cancer survival; especially lung cancer\,” said Deena Cook\, patient advocate with Lung Cancer Alliance. “Having the opportunity to attend the NLCRT as a patient\, I hope to provide insight into the stigma surrounding this disease. To successfully implement a lifesaving lung cancer screening program\, we must cut through this stigma. I am very excited to attend the NLCRT. Screening does save lives.” \nThe meeting marks the first annual conference for the group\, which is tasked with bringing organizations and experts together to assess issues and challenges to meeting its goals. A fundamental premise of the Roundtable is that collective action among member organizations will be more successful in reducing the burden of disease. The Roundtable strives to avoid duplicating roles of member organizations\, but rather to enhance lung cancer control through greater engagement with key organizations\, as well as to take on initiatives that all organizations would judge to be worthy but would be unlikely to initiate on their own. \nSteering Committee Roster: \n\nElla A. SUMMARY:Survivor at Every Stadium: Buffalo Bills
DESCRIPTION:Buffalo\, NY. Rochester lung cancer survivor Kelly Shannon will represent Team Draft at New Era Field on Sunday. Kelly\, and her boys\, will watch the Buffalo Bills take on the New England Patriots\, with former Buffalo Bill Chris Draft. \nI feel beyond fortunate to be able to bring my boys Cooper (9) and Carson (7) to the Buffalo Bills game with Chris Draft and represent Team Draft. I feel it’s an amazing opportunity for me to join the efforts to raise awareness and “change the face of lung cancer.” When people see me\, they would never guess that I have lung cancer\, that I was diagnosed almost 6 years ago\, and every day is a constant battle. It’s important to me that others see me as an example that anyone can get lung cancer…even a healthy 35-year-old mom\, without any known risk factors\, or a history of smoking. \nI also feel very blessed that I’m able to bring the boys to be a part of this experience. They have never been to a football game\, and the Bills are their favorite team. They couldn’t be more excited! This gift we’ve been given will build memories as a family we will never forget ❤️ ~ Kelly Shannon\n \nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor Series initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nOur Survivor at Every Stadium\, leverages our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players with our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country. As a part of our International Campaign\, the games allow us to celebrate our survivors\, raise awareness\, and give hope to those battling the disease\, as well as shine a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \n\nSpecial thanks to the Washington Redskins\, Karen Latzka\, Johns Hopkins and all of our Team Draft supporters for helping make this event possible. \n\nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer! \n \n
