SUMMARY:Survivor at Every Stadium: Chicago Bears
DESCRIPTION:View Photos \nChicago\, IL. North Shore Health lung cancer survivor-advocate Tracy Anderson Murphy represented Team Draft at Soldier Field on Sunday. Tracy\, her husband Jeremy\, her father and her brother watched the Chicago Bears defeat the Detroit Lions to get their first win of the season. #BearDown #Tacklinglungcancer \nFormer Junior Olympian and lung cancer survivor Tracy Anderson Murphy was proposed to on the finish line of the LUNGevity foundation’s annual Breathe Deep North Shore Walk and Fun Run last April in Deerfield. She married Jeremy Murphy on July 16 in Island Lake. She has also resided in Skokie and Buffalo Grove. \nRead more.. \n \nTracy Anderson Murphy   \nThe smile on my dad’s face was priceless when I told him that Team Draft was able to get tickets for him and my brother\, Scott\, as well. He isn’t smiling much these days\,. My mom’s recent passing from lung cancer\, has been so hard on all of us\, but even more for him\, since he lost his best friend and love of 50 years. What Team Draft is doing…how you make people feel…it can’t be bought…its truly priceless\, and very much appreciated. \nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nLeveraging our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nTracy Anderson Murphy \nAttending the Bears/Lions game with my husband\, dad\, and brother\, as guests of Team Draft co-founder and former Chicago Bear\, Chris Draft\, was an experience we will never forget. We are a big sports/athletic family and I grew up watching my Bears every game day with my parents and little brother. Getting to interact with many Bears Alumni\, especially my all time favorite\, Gary Fencik\, was very exciting! \nBecause we just lost my mom to Lung cancer 4 weeks ago\, I/we needed to share a happy day together to keep our hope for more good days alive.\n \nAs a lung cancer survivor who used her competitive attitude to defeat lung cancer\, being in the presence of so many like minded athletes is just so inspiring. It reminds me that I am strong and to keep that mindset\, and to always “make the play\, cry later”.(my mantra)\n \nTeam Draft made me feel like a VIP the whole time! Between all the pictures\, the way he introduced me to other alumni\, the whole experience… just amazing. \n\nBeing able to represent Team Draft is an honor that offers me the opportunity to be a lung cancer advocate. It allows me to help change the face of lung which helps to rid us of the ugly stigma that our disease carries. Doing so will help increase funding for research which will save lives. It doesn’t get any better than that!!! \n  \n \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \n  \n \nSpecial thanks to the Chicago Bears\, Coach John Fox\, North Shore Health\, Lungevity\, and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:Survivor at Every CFL Stadium: Ottawa Red Blacks
DESCRIPTION:Ottawa\, Ontario\, Canada. Lung cancer survivor-advocate Elizabeth Dessureault represented Team Draft at Ottawa’s TD Place stadium on Friday night. Liz watched the Ottawa Red Blacks defeat\, their Ontario province rival\, the Toronto Argonauts \nElizabeth Dessureault \nWhen she was told she had lung cancer\, Elizabeth Dessureault says\, she was unable to process what she was hearing. \n“It didn’t make sense to me that a 26-year-old\, healthy\, non-smoker could get lung cancer.” \nHers is not the face usually associated with the disease. \nBut\, as smoking rates decline\, people like Dessureault — young\, non-smokers\, often female — are increasingly being diagnosed with the cancer that is the deadliest and receives less research funding than other major cancers. \nWhile smoking is still the leading cause of lung cancer\, the majority of new patients are people who never smoked or no longer smoke\, according to a new report from Lung Cancer Canada\, which paints a picture of uneven treatment across the country\, poor early diagnosis and low research investment. \nDessureault’s case is typical of these new faces in some ways — by the time she was diagnosed\, her non-small-cell lung cancer was already well advanced. \nThe first surgeon she saw told Dessureault there was nothing he could do and gave her a year to live. \nIt was very traumatizing. \nWhat is far from typical is the fact that Dessureault was pregnant when she received the devastating diagnosis. \nHer son Jack — born two months early so that his mother could receive more aggressive treatment — is now a thriving four months old. \nBut Dessureault’s experiences have inspired to her raise awareness about the new realities of lung cancer and the need for support. \nI want to help change the face of lung cancer — Elizabeth Dessureault \nRead more \nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nLeveraging our connections with the Canadian Football League (CFL)\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country\, As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nSpecial thanks to the Ottawa Red Blacks\, Ottawa Cancer Centre\, Lung Cancer Canada and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer! \nView Photos

SUMMARY:Survivor at Every Stadium: Oakland Raiders
DESCRIPTION:View Photos \nOakland\, CA. Kaiser Health lung cancer survivor-advocate Don Stranathan and UC Davis Health lung cancer survivor-advocate Natalie Gibson represented Team Draft at the O.co Coliseum on Sunday. The survivors watched the Oakland Raiders lose a close game to the Atlanta Falcons. #RaiderNation #Tacklinglungcancer #LCAM \nDon Stranathan \nThe bad news is that I have cancer. The good news is that cancer has taught me to live life to the fullest. I never allow cancer to define me. I rarely miss an opportunity to hike\, bike\, or do anything that strengthens my immune system and keeps me out in nature. \nIn October 2011 I met Penny Blume\, the love of my life\, on a lung cancer support community on Inspire. Penny left this earth on Jan. 21\, 2014 after battling small cell lung cancer for 32 months. Penny and I spent our time together traveling back and forth from New York to California. She passed at my home in Santa Rosa\, Calif.\, after trying one last clinical trial at Stanford Cancer Center. \nPenny and I turned to each other for emotional support to battle our cancers and fell in love. It was after a couple of months of texting and chatting on social media that we decided to meet. Penny flew to California for her first visit in January 2012\, and the rest is history. \nMy relationship with Penny also marked the beginning of my advocacy work for lung cancer. It started when a friend of ours asked us to post our story on a lung cancer survivors group on Facebook. I posted something\, and then Penny and I decided to repost it on Inspire\, since it was the site that brought us together. In September 2012 our story was shared by ABC News and Good Morning America. In the following weeks\, it was shared and tweeted all over the world… \nMy last promises to Penny were that I would continue to live life to the fullest and advocate for lung cancer research and awareness. One day at a time I try to keep those promises to her. \n– See more at: http://scopeblog.stanford.edu/2014/11/18/my-last-promises-to-her-advocate-for-lung-cancer-awareness-and-live-life-to-the-fullest/#sthash.nz4BlwDO.dpuf \nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nSpecial thanks to the Oakland Raiders\, Kaiser Health\, UC Davis Cancer Center\, Genentech\, Dr. David Cooke and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:Survivor at Every College Stadium: Stanford Cardinal
DESCRIPTION:View Photos \nStanford\, CA. Bay Area lung cancer survivors Molly Golbon and Brenda Brewer will represent Team Draft at Stanford Stadium on Saturday. The survivors will watch the Stanford Cardinal take on the visiting USC Trojans. #changingthefaceoflungcancer \nMolly Golbon doesn’t take much for granted these days. \nThe 39-year old married working mom of two knows life can take unexpected turns. For her\, it came with a pain in her throat\, tiredness\, and a cough that wouldn’t go away.  \n“I went in for an MRI\, and that’s when they found there was something on the MRI\,” Golbon recalled. That something turned out to be lung cancer. “I think when they told me it was lung cancer\, I thought it can’t be. It can’t be. It’s probably bronchitis or pneumonia\, it’s not that.” \nUnfortunately\, it was. \nUntil her diagnosis\, Golbon\, like many people\, thought only smokers got lung cancer. \n\nSource: Menlo Park Woman Helping to Change the Stigma of Lung Cancer | NBC Bay Area http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/health/Menlo-Park-Woman-Helping-to-Change-the-Stigma-of-Lung-Cancer-254237991.html#ixzz4KWg8G1ig\nFollow us: @NBCBayArea on Twitter | NBCBayArea on Facebook\n\n\n  \nBrewer\, a non-smoker\, also has a point she wants to emphasize. \n“I just want to make sure that everybody knows that really anybody with lungs can get cancer\,” she said. “It’s just not a smoker’s disease any more. It’s every-day people.” \nA story published last year at www.webmd.com supports Brewer’s statement\, noting that research shows that aggressive lung cancer cases in the United States and United Kingdom are on the rise among nonsmokers. \nThe same story also says that experts “can’t explain why nonsmokers are a growing proportion of lung cancer diagnoses\, or why women seem especially vulnerable.” \nBrewer\, 52\, happily tells us that she is not going through the fight alone. \nShe stumbled upon a support group a few months ago when she woke up in the middle of the night and noticed former NFL and Stanford player Chris Draft on a TV commercial talking about his wife Keasha’s death from lung cancer in 2011. \nSource: http://blogs.mercurynews.com/hssports/2016/04/05/11432/ \n  \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nSpecial thanks to the Stanford University\, Stanford Cancer Center\, Kaiser Health\, Matt Doyle and all of our Team Draft supporters for helping make this event possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

DESCRIPTION:View Photos \nAtlanta\, GA. Emory University Winship Cancer Institute\, lung cancer survivor-advocates Delene Kepler and Micheal Blonder represented Team Draft at the Georgia Dome on Sunday. The survivors kicked off the NFL season by watching Atlanta Falcons take on the Tampa Bay Bucs. \nThe survivors were able to meet two other lung cancer survivors at the game\, Kristen Carlton and Ellis Lanham. \nDr. Rams office called me yesterday and told me about the first Falcons game and I am so delighted to be a part of something much bigger than a game.  I am celebrating 3 years with stage 4 lung cancer. ~ Delene \nDelene will be joined by her husband Rick and Michael will be taking his son\, Zack\, to the game. \n“Lung Cancer; Suzanne and my mother Lois\, went on a mission to find the best treatment available.  The pathology report I had non -small cell cancer with an egfr mutation\, there happened to be trial at Emory I qualified for\, and have been a participant for the last 17 months. I take oral chemo each morning. \nIn summary\, what I have experienced is more than a journey. It was about never giving up\, the financial issues took a back seat\, I did everything the Doctors recommended\, and just kept fighting\, never giving up. Today\, I’m doing great due to my families love and support. I am a better person. \nAt the end of the day this is me fighting the battle of my life\, I have learned to rely on myself\, only the individual in the fight knows how they feel. SUMMARY:Former Falcons\, Draft and Finneran\, Go Over The Edge
DESCRIPTION:Video Photos \nNFL Veterans to go Over the Edge with Team LIVESTRONG\nChris Draft and Brian Finneran will rappel down an Atlanta midrise\nwith Team LIVESTRONG to raise funds for people affected by cancer \nAUSTIN\, Texas – August 23\, 2016 – Thirteen-year NFL veteran Chris Draft and 11-year veteran Brian Finneran will be rappelling down Atlanta’s Buckhead Tower with Team LIVESTRONG at “Over the Edge” on Sept. 10 to raise funds for LIVESTRONG at the YMCA.\nDraft and Finneran have created their own fundraising teams for the event\, “Draft’s Picks” and “Finn’s Falcons\,” and will lead a competition to register the most team members and raise the most funds from now until they rappel. Anyone over the age of 18 can join either team by registering for the event\, or simply donate to help Draft and Finneran go “over the edge.” \nAll proceeds from their teams’ fundraising will go toward growing LIVESTRONG at the YMCA — an evidence‐based community program that helps adult cancer survivors reclaim their health and well‐being after treatment. The 12‐week\, small group program aids survivors in improving their strength and physical fitness\, diminishing the severity of therapy side effects and developing supportive relationships. The program is offered at little to no cost for cancer survivors. \n“I had a moment of pause before joining Over the Edge as I thought about rappelling down a building with a fear of heights\, but that fear is nothing compared to the challenges that cancer survivors face in their everyday lives\,” Draft said. “I’ll do anything if I believe it’ll help improve the lives of survivors\, and we can be sure that the money we raise for LIVESTRONG at the YMCA programs nationwide will do just that.” \nLIVESTRONG at the YMCA was recently highlighted by Vice President Joe Biden’s National Cancer Moonshot Initiative for the commitment by LIVESTRONG and YMCA of the USA (Y‐USA) to double the size and scope of the program by 2021 to serve 100\,000 cancer survivors and to integrate the program into clinical practice across the country. \nDraft played for six teams in his career\, most notably the Atlanta Falcons\, where he excelled as a run-stopping linebacker. Though more importantly off the field\, he began Team Draft in 2011 with his wife Keasha to give hope\, comfort and inspiration to people affected by cancer\, while she courageously battled the disease herself. One month later\, Keasha passed away\, but Draft has maintained fight\, bringing awareness and funding to lung cancer research and care. Finneran now hosts a daily radio show on Atlanta’s 680 The Fan after playing 10 of his 11 years in the city. \nThe two ex-teammates grew up together and look forward to one-upping each other in this Over the Edge charity challenge. \n“After learning about LIVESTRONG at the YMCA\, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to grow and expand a program that helps cancer survivors return to their daily lives after treatment\,” Finneran said. “And I definitely didn’t want to miss out on a chance to out-do my old friend Chris one more time!” \nAbout the LIVESTRONG Foundation\nThe LIVESTRONG Foundation fights to improve the lives of people affected by cancer now. For 19 years\, LIVESTRONG has been a voice for cancer survivors and has directly served more than 3.5 million people. A pioneer in the field of survivorship\, LIVESTRONG remains a world leader in providing direct services to cancer patients and survivors\, advocating for policies that enhance survivors’ quality of life and developing partnerships that create access to cancer programs across the country. Since 2007\, the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program has made a return to fitness and well-being possible for more than 40\,000 survivors in more than 500 YMCA locations. Working with The University of Texas’ Dell Medical School\, LIVESTRONG is building the LIVESTRONG Cancer Institutes to reinvent and redesign cancer care for and with people affected by cancer. \nIf anyone you know needs cancer support\, please visit LIVESTRONG.org/WeCanHelp. SUMMARY:Survivor at Every Ballpark: Minnesota Twins
DESCRIPTION:View Photos \nMinneapolis\, MN. Lung cancer survivor-advocate Zac Gustafson and his family joined our co-founder\, Chris Draft\, at the WCCO studio before heading to Target Field to watch the Minnesota Twins take on the Detroit Tigers. \nMINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — A 9-year-old boy with cystic fibrosis is now battling another life-threatening disease \, and his fight is gaining international attention. \nZac Gustafson was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis when he was two after doctors discovered that his sister Ella had it. Now\, the Renville 4th-grader has a form of lung cancer that’s usually found in adults. \nThe Gustafson house in Renville\, Minnesota isn’t hard to find. There are four kids\, a tree house that gets plenty of attention\, a garden that has plenty of vegetables\, and of course\, plenty of sports talk. \n“Baseball is a big thing in this house. It’s huge\,” Zac’s mom Sue Gustafson said. \nSo much so that Zac\, a Brian Dozier fan\, already knows what he wants to be when he grows up. \n“I want to be a baseball player and a fisherman\,” he said. \nFor the first two years of Zac’s life\, he was sick a lot. It wasn’t until his little sister Ella was born\, and her newborn screening confirmed she had cystic fibrosis\, that Zac’s parents realized he had it too. \n“And it just breaks your heart when you realize that not just one of my children has a genetically terminal disease — I now have two children with this awful disease we know nothing about\,” Sue said. \n“They look like ordinary kids just living life and playing outdoors. But it’s on the inside that you can’t see\,” Zac and Ella’s dad Jim Gustafson said. \n“It’s hard to go through\, and you have to do a lot of stuff\,” Ella said. \nCystic fibrosis is a life-threatening disease that affects mucus\, along with a person’s lungs and digestive system. Both Zac and Ella have to take up to 20 pills a day\, and they have to wear vibrating vests up to four times a day to keep their lungs clear. But for Zac\, this is only half the battle. \n“When the tests came back as cancer\, it caught everyone by surprise\,” Jim said. \nThis summer\, doctors found a spot on Zac’s lungs. Tests showed it was a form of lung cancer. \n“It was extremely hard to hear that ‘C’ word\, and it took a lot of processing\,” Sue said. “It was probably the one thing that has dropped me to my knees. Unbelievable.” \nBut Zac’s reaction was not what you would expect. \n“That night that we told him all of this\, he just smiled and said\, ‘Well\, that’s kind of a curveball\,” Sue said. \nOver the past few months\, Zac has had two surgeries to try and stop the cancer from spreading. It’s been hard\, especially for Ella who is used to having her big brother around to play sports with. \n“Sad\, and kind of hard for me because he plays volleyball with me outside all the time\,” she said. \nBut even as Zac battles not one\, but two life-threatening diseases\, the smile has never left his face. Life threw him a curveball\, but it turns out Zac’s a pretty good hitter. \n“He’s my hero. He’s a superstar\,” Jim said. “He takes all this in stride. He takes it a lot better than I would if I was in his shoes.” \n“The Lord always provides\,” Sue said. “We are yet to be living in a cardboard box. We have yet to go without a meal. Something always shows up exactly when we need it.” \nDoctors say Zac’s case is incredibly rare\, and they don’t believe his cancer is related to his cystic fibrosis. Experts around the world are studying his case. \nRead more.. \n \nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer. \nOur Survivor at Every Ball Park initiative\, leverages our connections with the MLB\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country. SUMMARY:Cancer Moonshot Regional Summit - Winship at Emory
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta\, GA –Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University was among only ten cancer centers around the country to hold a regional Cancer Moonshot Summit on Wednesday\, June 29 at the same time that Vice President Biden spoke and convened a session in Washington\, DC. \nThe regional summit included a panel discussion following the Vice President’s remarks. \nDr. Sagar Lonial introduced the panelists: \nDr. Pamela Rosell is Regional Director for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Region 4 which includes eight Southeastern states and six federally recognized tribes. She has two decades of experience in health care policy\, public administration and gerontology. \nDr. Richard Wender is Chief Cancer Control Officer for the American Cancer Society. He is responsible for overseeing and guiding the national and global cancer control programs of ACS including cancer screening\, tobacco control\, access to care and quality of life. For 34 years he served a family physician in the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. \nDr. Wally Curran is Executive Director of Winship Cancer Institute\, Chair of the Department of Radiation Oncology and group chairman and principal investigator of NRG Oncology. He is an international expert in advanced lung cancer and malignant brain tumors. \nChris Draft is an international Health Advocate and former Atlanta Falcon linebacker who played 13 years in the NFL including time with the Bears\, Panthers\, Rams\, Bills and Redskins. He started the Chris Draft Family Foundation in 2006. In December 2010\, Draft’s wife\, Keasha\, was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. Standing side by side at their wedding on November 27\, 2011\, the Drafts launched a new CDFF initiative\, Team Draft. \nTeam Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The fact is anybody can get lung cancer. Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked—including Keasha—are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. Team Draft is out to change all that. \nThe panelists were asked a few questions: \n-In a minute or two please tell the audience why the Cancer Moonshot is important to you and your organization. \n-If you had a chance to meet personally with the Vice President what would you tell him about setting priorities for the Cancer Moonshot? \n-Several of our roundtables discussions will focus on access to care and health disparities. What are some of the limitations facing the underserved populations and how can the Cancer Moonshot initiative address the needs? \n-The Vice President has talked about unleashing the power of big data in his Cancer Moonshot. We have three tables devoted to this topic today…what do you think are some of the biggest challenges? \nThe goal of the Cancer Moonshot is to double the rate of progress in cancer prevention\, diagnosis\, treatment and care over the next five years and to ultimately end cancer as we know it. These regional summits will be the first time that individuals and organizations representing the entire cancer community will join the national charge to accelerate progress against cancer. \nWe are honored to have been invited to participate in one of only ten regional summits kicking off Vice President Biden’s Cancer Moonshot. Team Draft is proud to be a part of this exciting and important initiative to eradicate cancer as we know it in our lifetime.

SUMMARY:NFL Ambassador and International Health Care Advocate Chris Draft Brings Hopeful Message to Nation’s Largest Gathering of Lung Cancer Survivors
DESCRIPTION:WASHINGTON\, D.C. – For the second year in a row\, former NFL linebacker and Team Draft Co-Founder Chris Draft served as the keynote speaker at the nation’s largest gathering of lung cancer survivors—LUNGevity’s National Hope Summit. At the Summit\, Draft shared Team Draft’s mission with hundreds of survivors who will descend on Washington this weekend for this one-of-a-kind survivorship conference. \nFounded by Chris and his wife Keasha\, who died of lung cancer in 2011\, Team Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and funding through its Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer—a campaign committed to shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” \n“When Keasha and I launched Team Draft\, we wanted to impact research funding and improve the quality of life for those affected by lung cancer\,” says Draft. “We aren’t fighting against lung cancer\, we’re fighting for people\, and I’m honored to have the opportunity to bring that fight to the Hope Summit.” \n“Chris Draft’s unyielding commitment to shatter the stigma around lung cancer is remarkable\,” said Andrea Ferris\, President and Chairman of LUNGevity Foundation. “Draft refuses to give up—trading football tackles for the larger lung cancer fight\, and LUNGevity is proud to be on the front lines with him.” \nWhile in Washington\, Draft visited with Congressman Rick Nolan (MN) to discuss the challenges faced by lung cancer survivors and their families. Congressman Nolan co-chairs the Lung Cancer Caucus and is the father of a lung cancer survivor. \nTeam Draft also used the D.C. visit to debut a new video celebrating Team Draft’s second annual Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge. The centerpiece of Team Draft’s Campaign\, the Super Bowl Challenge is a unique fund raising challenge that allows lung cancer survivor-advocates to compete to raise funds for awareness and research. The top three finishers this year\, won trips to Super Bowl 50\, the NFL Pro Bowl\, and the 25th Taste of the NFL. To see the video\, visit https://vimeo.com/161688910. \nDraft explains\, “The Super Bowl Challenge gives us an opportunity to use the overwhelming media coverage surrounding the Super Bowl to raise critical public awareness about lung cancer on an international level. With the game as a backdrop\, we use each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about lung cancer and the hope that exists for those battling the disease.” \nTeam Draft’s efforts are paying off. \n“The Super Bowl Challenge achieves some amazing things in terms of public awareness and changing perceptions about lung cancer\,” says Dr. Ross Camidge\, Director of Thoracic Oncology at Colorado University Cancer Center. \nThe Super Bowl Challenge is also an innovative fund raising tool designed to support work being done by all those fighting lung cancer. “It takes a team to tackle cancer\, and we are proud to support organizations like LUNGevity. Last year\, we took the Super Bowl Challenge to the next level\, adding a fund raising component that allowed survivor-advocates who raised over $1\,000 to commit 50% of those funds to a lung cancer organization or cancer center of their choice\,” Draft explains. “Building on the success of last year’s Challenge\, we plan to increase that to 80% this year.” \n2016 Super Bowl Challenge winners\, Kathy Weber and Elizabeth Dessureault\, joined Team Draft at the Hope Summit. \nAbout Team Draft \nTeam Draft (www.teamdraft.org) is an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The smoking stigma impacts lung cancer funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other diseases. SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Rink: Los Angeles Kings
DESCRIPTION:Los Angeles\, CA. USC lung cancer survivor-advocate Jeff Julian represented Team Draft at the Staples Center on Saturday night. Jeff and his wife\, Kristine\, watched the LA Kings defeat the visiting Edmonton Oilers\, 6-4. ‪#‎ASurvivoratEveryRink‬ ‪#‎TeamJeff‬ ‪#‎LCSM‬ \n“Hope and Optimism is not about the result and should not be impacted by past results. To put it another way\, it’s not really about yesterday or tomorrow\, even though it may seem like it is because that’s what you are hoping for in the end. I believe that Hope and Optimism should be there for TODAY. Hope and Optimism is there for how we live our lives\, not for what we achieve in life. Don’t be afraid to be hopeful\, even in the most dire of circumstances. And never allow yourself to lose the optimism that things can be better\, no matter how challenging it might have been in the past. Let yourself live your life\, on a daily basis\, with the hope and optimism that will allow you to truly enjoy your life and find the strength to get through anything that may come your way.” ~Jeff Julian \nJeff is the Head Swim coach at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center in Pasadena\, CA. \nGiven the overwhelming success of our Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, in 2012\, we expanded it beyond the gridiron to the ice through our Survivor at Every Rink initiative. As part of Team Draft’s National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer\, this celebration of survivorship raises awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers across North America. \nThrough our Survivor at Every Rink initiative\, we are working with all NHL teams to have a lung cancer survivor attend one of the team’s home games as a part of their national initiative\, Hockey Fights Cancer! \nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nSpecial thanks to the LA Kings\, Kelly Cheeseman\, Kadar Hamilton\, USC Norris Cancer Center\, the NHL and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer! \n

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every College Arena: University of Arizona
DESCRIPTION:Tucson\, AZ. University of Arizona lung cancer survivor-advocate Ron Crescenzo represented Team Draft at the University of Arizona Men’s Basketball game against the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday\, March 5th. Ron was hosted at the game by\, former NFL player and Chris Draft Family Foundation Board member\, Kadar Hamilton. \nDiagnosed with stage IV lung cancer\, December 4\, 2008\, Ron vowed to not give up\, and to keep moving forward. Ron’s vow was not easy. His initial symptoms were fatigue and lower back pain\, but like most men\, Ron assumed it was just a work related injury/ailment\, and pushed through it. After consulting with a chiropractor\, physical therapist and some other medical professionals\, Ron was ordered to take an MRI. \n“At that point\, it was clear as day\, I had cancer and it had spread to my spine (lumbar 3 vertebrae) where there was a massive tumor causing a fracture”. \nHe immediately had an emergency reconstructive surgery to prevent paralysis. After a number of screws\, rods and a medical device called a cage\, Ron was told by his TMC doctor\, he had between 2 months and\, at best and with chemotherapy\, 6 months to live given his recent diagnosis of stage IV lung cancer. \n“It seemed they had already pronounced me dead and treated me add if i were a smoker\, which i was not.” \nUnwilling to accept this death sentence\, Ron sought out a second opinion at UMC where he met Dr. Laura Garland who said with chemo therapy\, he could have 3-4 years of quality life. \nAfter 85 rounds of chemo\, today marks 7 years 3 months since he was diagnosed. \nRon will turn 60 on May 15\, 2016. Born in upstate New York\, Ron attended Lakeland high school were he played baseball and football where he learned discipline\, courage\, perseverance\, and teamwork. These character traits stuck with Ron throughout his life and continue to govern how he continues to live his life. \nRon has always been a fighter\, having lost his mother to breast cancer in 1973. Shortly thereafter\, he moved to Tucson AZ in 1974 with his father to be closer family. Ron is a father to two\, and grandfather to a beautiful 2 year old girl. \nBefore his diagnosis\, Ron was a real estate investor and also worked as a contacted engine technician. One of his career goals wad to become a full time government employee for the U.S. Border Patrol as an engine technician. He had set a goal in 2003\, mapped a plan and then executed upon that plan. In 2008\, the fruits of his labors had finally paid off. He attained his goal! However\, shortly after\, the lower back issues became more difficult to bear\, leading to the diagnosis. \nFor the last 4 years\, Ron has attended a support group through the University of Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson AZ http://uacc.arizona.edu \nThis group is comprised of about 20 camber patients\, 4 of which are diagnosed with lung cancer. Ron acts as an inspiration to others having more than doubled his estimated life expectancy post diagnosis. Ron’s story\, his victory over cancer was not a fairy tale\, he dealt with depression\, self doubt\, and even tested his faith. However\, being a fighter all his life\, he had an epiphany and said\, “I don’t know how to give up\, I’m going to fight this beast and I’m going to win!” He started with walking portions of a local route called Tumamouth Trail. Progressively\, he increased his distance until he was able to walk the entire uphill trail in a single workout. Queue the Rocky theme! \n“All joking aside\, as i trudged up the Tumamouth trail\, i felt like Rocky\, climbing up the steps in Philadelphia. That sense of accomplishment despite all the adversity. Success in the face of certain death. Victory over cancer!” \nTeam Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The fact is anybody can get lung cancer. Team Draft is out to change all that by using the unique platform available to Chris as a former NFL player and nationally recognized community leader and health advocate to lead a National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer—a campaign that has taken us to more than 100 of the top cancer treatment and research centers in the United States and Canada. \nOur goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local and national level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of lung cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \nSpecial thanks to the University of Arizona Cancer Center\, Kadar Hamilton and our Team Draft’s supporters for helping make this experience possible. \nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:KImberly Ringen is Heading to Super Bowl 50
DESCRIPTION:Denver\, CO. Lung cancer survivor-advocate Kim Ringen was the top fundraiser in Team Draft’s Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge. Kim and her husband\, Davin\, will represent Team Draft at Super Bowl 50 and the 25th annual Taste of the NFL the first weekend in February.\n\n\n“Having the opportunity to be apart of the Lung Cancer Super Bowl challenge has been a fun and exciting experience. It is about spreading awareness about this beast of a disease…and the cherry on top is to be in the stands of the biggest football game of the year!!”\n\nThe Super Bowl Challenge participants were part of a friendly competition\, with the top fundraisers awarded trips to Super Bowl 50\, the NFL Pro-Bowl and the Taste of the NFL. Kim and the other winners\, announced on January 4\, 2016\, will have an opportunity to share their powerful stories with key individuals with influence from across the country.\n\n“Opening day of the (LCSC) challenge my health declined and I was hospitalized…some would say that the timing was less than ideal – I say the timing was perfect!!! Rather than laying in the hospital bed constantly wondering if I was going to make it through… We were on our phones launching our campaign via social media spreading the word about the importance of research funding.”\n\n“The LCSC gave me a gift…as I was wheeled in and out of different diagnostic and surgical procedures we would get updates on our phones that yet another donation and encouraging comment had came through…This was such an uplifting experience in a time that would have been considered very mentally draining. After having a large wedge of my lung surgically removed I felt my inner fight grow stronger. I have considered myself a fighter throughout these last 2.5 years – but honestly just before the (LCSC) challenge began I felt a drain in my mental stamina…I fully believe the LCSC and the generous loving support from my friends and family ignited my spark..my fight!!! And that is what is keeping me alive!!!”\n\nI choose Life!!!!!\n\nThank you Chris Draft Family Foundation! ~ KImberly Ringen\n\nThe survivors that raise over $1\,000 can designate a beneficiary for 50% of their funds raised. Kim has designated the Lung Cancer Colorado Fund at UC Health as her beneficiary.\n\nAll of the participants will be able to continue raising funds until the Super Bowl\, February 7\, 2016.\n\nTeam Draft was founded by NFL veteran Linebacker Chris Draft and his late wife Keasha\, an engineer and Clemson graduate who died of lung cancer at the age of 38.\n\n“Super Bowl and Pro Bowl week are a fitting time to spotlight the crusade to change the face of lung cancer. The level of commitment\, drive and passion required to make it this far parallels the efforts required to get lung cancer research to the next level\,” said Chris Draft who co-founded Team Draft with his late wife Keasha to change the face of lung cancer.\n\nKeasha and Chris Draft had attended the Super Bowl the year of her diagnosis\, fulfilling one of her lifelong dreams. The memory of that Super Bowl trip served as part of the inspiration for The Super Bowl Challenge. “It takes a team to tackle lung cancer\, and the Super Bowl Challenge has expanded this amazing team. Keasha’s legacy of hope lives on through the Super Bowl Challenge team and we are grateful to all who have contributed and continue to contribute to lung cancer awareness\, research\, treatment and patient advocacy efforts\, and “said Draft. “We are excited to have the opportunity to take this year’s Super Bowl Challenge winners and their stories to the Super Bowl\, the Pro-Bowl\, and the Taste of the NFL.”\n\nAbout the Super Bowl\n\nThe day on which the Super Bowl is played\, now considered by some an unofficial American national holiday\,[1][2] is called “Super Bowl Sunday”. It is the second-largest day for U.S. food consumption\, after Thanksgiving Day.[3] In addition\, the Super Bowl has frequently been the most-watched American television broadcast of the year; the four most-watched broadcasts in U.S. television history are Super Bowls.[4] In 2015\, Super Bowl XLIX became the most-watched American television program in history with an average audience of 114.4 million viewers\, the fifth time in six years the game had set a record\, starting with the 2010 Super Bowl\, which itself had taken over the number-one spot held for 27 years by the final episode of M*A*S*H.[5][6][7] The Super Bowl is also among the most-watched sporting events in the world\, almost all audiences being North American\, and is second to soccer’s UEFA Champions League final as the most watched annual sporting event worldwide\n\nAbout Team Draft\n\nTeam Draft\, an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation\, is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” Despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. Her days are spent tracking developments in LC research and treatments\, supporting and informing LC ePatients and caregivers online and in person\, and raising awareness through writing\, blogging and public speaking. She attends and reports on medical meetings as a Patient Advocate\, and is one of the founders and moderators of the Lung Cancer Social Media (#LCSM) community. SUMMARY:THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL - A Survivor at Every Stadium: Oakland Raiders
DESCRIPTION:Oakland\, CA. Kaiser Health lung cancer survivor-advocate Don Stranathan represented Team Draft at the O.co Coliseum on Thursday night. Don watched the Silver and Black defeat the San Diego Chargers in overtime. #RaiderNation #Tacklinglungcancer #ThursdayNightFootball #Raiderettes\n\n\nDon Stranathan\n\nMy last promises to her: Advocate for lung cancer awareness and live life to the fullest\n\nThe bad news is that I have cancer. The good news is that cancer has taught me to live life to the fullest. I never allow cancer to define me. I rarely miss an opportunity to hike\, bike\, or do anything that strengthens my immune system and keeps me out in nature.\n\nIn October 2011 I met Penny Blume\, the love of my life\, on a lung cancer support community on Inspire. Penny left this earth on Jan. 21\, 2014 after battling small cell lung cancer for 32 months. Penny and I spent our time together traveling back and forth from New York to California. She passed at my home in Santa Rosa\, Calif.\, after trying one last clinical trial at Stanford Cancer Center.\n\nPenny and I turned to each other for emotional support to battle our cancers and fell in love. It was after a couple of months of texting and chatting on social media that we decided to meet. Penny flew to California for her first visit in January 2012\, and the rest is history.\n\nMy relationship with Penny also marked the beginning of my advocacy work for lung cancer. It started when a friend of ours asked us to post our story on a lung cancer survivors group on Facebook. I posted something\, and then Penny and I decided to repost it on Inspire\, since it was the site that brought us together. In September 2012 our story was shared by ABC News and Good Morning America. In the following weeks\, it was shared and tweeted all over the world…\n\nMy last promises to Penny were that I would continue to live life to the fullest and advocate for lung cancer research and awareness. One day at a time I try to keep those promises to her.\n\n– See more at: http://scopeblog.stanford.edu/2014/11/18/my-last-promises-to-her-advocate-for-lung-cancer-awareness-and-live-life-to-the-fullest/#sthash.nz4BlwDO.dpuf\n\nIn 2012\, we\, Team Draft\, launched our inaugural Survivor at Every Stadium initiative on CNN during a nationally-televised prime time special focusing on lung cancer and our National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer.\n\nOur Survivor at Every Stadium initiative\, leverages our connections with the NFL\, its teams and players and our relationships with many of the top cancer centers in the country. As part of our National Campaign\, this celebration of survivorship raises lung cancer awareness\, gives hope to those battling the disease\, and shines a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country.\n\nTeam Draft’s goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local\, national\, and international level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.\n\nWe kicked off our 2nd Lung Cancer Survivors Super Bowl Challenge on December 2nd\, 2015. The Challenge builds off the success of our established Survivor Series by using the games at the heart of that initiative to create buzz for supporting our lung cancer survivors.\n\nSupport Don’s Team: https://www.crowdrise.com/LungCancerSurvivorsSuperBowl \n\nSpecial thanks to the Oakland Raiders\, Kaiser Health\, Genentech and our Team Draft supporters for helping make this experience possible.\n\nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Arena: Atlanta Hawks
DESCRIPTION:Atlanta\, GA. Piedmont Health lung cancer survivor-advocate Billie Jane Hood represented Team Draft at Philips Arena on Wednesday night. Billie celebrated her birthday by watching the Atlanta Hawks defeat the Philadelphia 76ers. #ASurvivorAtEveryArena #Changingthefaceoflungcancer \n\n\nCOVINGTON — When Covington resident Billie Jane Hood underwent a routine evaluation for knee replacement surgery at Piedmont Newton Hospital\, the last thing she expected to hear was that she had stage IV lung cancer.\n\n“I was never more shocked by anything in my life\,” Hood\, who is a lifelong nonsmoker\, said. “It was a wild roller coaster ride from the first PET scan to being told I had advanced stage lung cancer and then on to more tests. I told my doctor\, ‘I still have places to go and things to see.’”\n\nRead the full story\n\nTeam Draft is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The fact is anybody can get lung cancer. Team Draft is out to change all that by using the unique platform available to Chris as a former NFL player and nationally recognized community leader and health advocate to lead a National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer—a campaign that has taken us to more than 100 of the top cancer treatment and research centers in the United States and Canada.\n\nThrough our Survivor at Every Arena initiative\, we are working with all 30 NBA teams to have a lung cancer survivor from a local cancer center and their guests attend one of the team’s home games.\n\nOur goals are to create a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local and national level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of lung cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease.\n<P.\n\nSpecial thanks to the Atlanta Hawks\, Piedmont Healthcare and our Team Draft’s supporters for helping make this experience possible.\n\n\nDonate now to Support the National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer!
