SUMMARY:Saint Louis University Cancer Center
DESCRIPTION:May 24\, 2013 St. Loius\, MO- Team Draft was able to tour the facilities and get to know the latest techniques in clinical research \nThe Saint Louis University Cancer Center is a joint initiative between Saint Louis University School of Medicine and Saint Louis University Hospital. Team Draft was able to tour the facilities and get to know the latest techniques in clinical research and treatment options for lung cancer patients in the St. Louis and surrounding areas. We were also able to discuss the Cancer Center’s music therapy program. In partnership with the St. Louis Symphony\, musicians serenade patients with Chopin\, Mozart\, Beethoven. These musicians are part of the SymphonyCares Program as part of a study on how music impacts cancer patients. SLU Hospital patients enjoy performances not only by the Symphony but SLU student musicians\, Maryville University music therapy internship students and board-certified music therapists. \nResearchers monitor the patients’ respirations per minute\, blood pressure and pulse. Participants also answer questions about their anxiety levels. The benefits of live music are well-documented by the American Music Therapy Association. One tangible way in which music can promote healing is when it’s performed at the speed of an ideal resting heart rate\, around 60 to 72 beats a minute\, something both certified therapists and Symphony musicians consider in their playing. \nPatients receiving music therapy one-on-one from certified providers — available at no extra charge at SLU hospital — get to pick their favorite music.

SUMMARY:Team Draft To Celebrate Co-Founder’s Birthday By Attending Live Taping Of Dancing With The Stars With 12-Year-Old Lung Cancer Survivor
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, May 13\, 2013 Los Angeles\, CA- Celebrating what would have been the 40th birthday of Team Draft’s co-founder\, Keasha Draft\, who lost her courageous battle with lung cancer in 2011. \n( Los Angeles\, CA) – Monday\, May 13\, 2013\, would have been the 40th birthday of Team Draft’s co- \nfounder\, Keasha Draft\, who lost her courageous battle with lung cancer in 2011. Team Draft is marking \nthe occasion by spending the evening at a live taping of Dancing With The Stars with 12-year-old lung \ncancer survivor Gabby Wilson and her mother\, Dana. Gabby and Dana will be joined at the taping \nby Keasha’s husband\, nationally-recognized health advocate and former NFL linebacker\, Chris Draft\, \nChris’ mother\, Rose\, and Keasha’s mother\, Gail Rutledge. Dancing With The Stars airs tonight at 8:00 \np.m. (EST) on ABC. \nTeam Draft is an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation created by Keasha and Chris during \nKeasha’s year-long struggle with lung cancer. Their hope was that Keasha’s valiant fight to dance\, \nsmile and live would give hope\, comfort and inspiration to the patients\, caregivers and healthcare \nproviders who are battling the disease every day. \nWhile attending Clemson University\, Keasha was a member of the Rally Cat’s dance squad before \ngraduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation\, Keasha worked as an engineer \nwhile dancing for the Charlotte Hornets before working in the pharmaceutical industry. She was an \nenergetic\, vibrant young woman who had never smoked when she was diagnosed with Stage IV Lung \nCancer in December 2010. At the time\, her only “symptom” was a slight shortness of breath a few days \nearlier. Despite the diagnosis and knowing the long odds they faced\, Keasha and Chris decided to fight \nback. On November 27\, 2011\, standing side-by-side\, they launched Team Draft at their wedding. One \nmonth later\, Keasha lost her fight and died at the age of 38. \n“’Strong’ is too shallow and too small a word to describe Keasha. She was\, quite simply\, ferocious\,” \nsays Draft. “I see that same fierce spirit in Gabby\, and I can’t think of anybody I would rather have \njoin me at Dancing With The Stars tonight\,” he adds. Draft first met Gabby\, who has been battling lung \ncancer since she was 5 years old\, last year at a stop on Team Draft’s National Campaign to Change the \nFace of Lung Cancer. \nThat Team Draft will celebrate Keasha’s birthday by attending a taping of Dancing With The Stars \nis significant. Aside from being one of Keasha’s favorite shows\, Dancing With The Stars has been a \nstrong ally in the fight to raise lung cancer awareness. Last season\, DWTS Pros Jonathan Roberts and \nAnna Trebunskaya performed a tribute dance in honor of their friend and fellow ballroom dancer\, Julia \nIvleva\, who was in the middle of her own battle with Stage IV Lung Cancer. Jonathan\, Anna\, and Julia \nembody the dance\, smile and live philosophy\, and Team Draft thanks DWTS for helping to shine the \nlight on lung cancer.

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Arena- Atlanta Hawks
DESCRIPTION: ( ATLANTA\, GA) – On Wednesday\, April 3\, 2013\, nearly twenty lung cancer survivors\, support teams\, and doctors will be on hand when the Atlanta Hawks honor Team Draft co-founder and former NFL linebacker\, Chris Draft\, with the Be Greater Atlanta Award. \nAtlanta Hawks To Honor Team Draft Co-Founder With Be Greater Atlanta Award During Nationally Televised Game \n ( ATLANTA\, GA) – On Wednesday\, April 3\, 2013\, nearly twenty lung cancer survivors\, support teams\, and doctors will be on hand when the Atlanta Hawks honor Team Draft co-founder and former NFL linebacker\, Chris Draft\, with the Be Greater Atlanta Award. The award recognizes individuals throughout Metro Atlanta who are making a difference in their communities and will be presented to Draft during the Hawks game against the New York Knicks—a game which will be televised nationally on ESPN—in recognition of Team Draft’s national lung cancer awareness efforts. \nThis Wednesday’s game is just the latest in Team Draft’s Survivor at Every Arena initiative. Working with teams throughout the NBA\, Team Draft is leading this national effort to have lung cancer survivors\, researchers and doctors attend games across the country. As part of Team Draft’s National Campaign to Change the Face of Lung Cancer\, the Survivor at Every Arena initiative is designed to raise awareness\, give hope to those battling the disease\, and shine a light on the important work being done at cancer research and treatment centers around the country. \nTeam Draft\, an initiative of the Chris Draft Family Foundation\, is dedicated to raising lung cancer awareness and increasing badly needed research funding by shattering the misconception that lung cancer is a “smoker’s disease.” The fact is\, anybody can get lung cancer. Yet\, despite the fact that between 20\,000 and 30\,000 people who have never smoked—including Keasha and Abby—are diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States each year\, the smoking stigma negatively impacts lung cancer research funding\, which pales in comparison to funding for other major cancers and diseases. Team Draft is out to change all that. “If we can take away the stigma that says you have to be a smoker to get lung cancer\, we have a real chance to educate people about the true nature of the disease\,” explains Draft. \nSince Chris and Keasha launched Team Draft at their wedding in November of 2011\, Team Draft has been on a mission to tackle cancer. Team Draft’s national campaign to raise public awareness and share the hope that now exists for those diagnosed with the disease has taken it to nearly 60 of the top cancer research and treatment facilities in North America. \n“Our hope is not only to positively impact research funding\, but to improve the quality of life for those affected by lung cancer\,” says Draft. “We aren’t fighting against lung cancer\, we’re fighting for people. That’s why we are leading this national campaign to change the face of lung cancer.”

SUMMARY:Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Institute
DESCRIPTION:Patient Navigation was founded by Harold P. Freeman\, M.D. in 1990\, when he initiated and developed the first Patient Navigation program in Harlem to reduce disparities in access to diagnosis and treatment of cancer\, particularly among poor and uninsured people. In 2007\, as a direct result of a $2.5M grant received from the Amgen Foundation\, the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention established the Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Institute (HPFPNI) to support patient navigation training to individuals associated with organizations. The Institute opened its doors to address the growth in patient navigation programs\, but also to offer standards and best practices that are customizable to meet each program’s needs. \nTeam Draft will have the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Harold Freeman and discuss the Institute’s program and how the Institute is leading the way in addressing the current needs of the surrounding community. \nThe Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Institute\, located in New York City\, serves as the gold standard in patient navigation and offers the only certificate of completion program in patient navigation endorsed by Harold P. Freeman\, M.D. The Institute’s goals are to: \n· Promote standards for patient navigation programs through an emphasis on the Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Model. \n· To help others learn best practices by ensuring that programs adhere to the peer-reviewed\, recognized definition and measures for patient navigation set forth by the Patient Navigation Research Program (PNRP). \nTo date\, the Harold P. Freeman Patient Navigation Institute has taught over 1\,000 people the skills of successful patient navigation and has served leading organizations such as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society\, Cleveland Clinic\, and the Ralph Lauren Center for Cancer Care and Prevention with training programs aimed at increasing their efficiencies and supporting retention rates of patients via patient navigation.
