SUMMARY:Mount Sinai Medical Center
DESCRIPTION:New York\, NY. Mount Sinai has been leading the way in lung cancer screening since they became home to the International Early Lung Cancer Action Program ( I-ELCAP). In addition to lung cancer screening\, Mount Sinai has lead efforts to study the overall health effects on New Yorkers from the World Trade Center attacks. \nTeam Draft will visit Mount Sinai on Wednesday and discuss lung cancer treatment with Doctors Henschke\, Gomez\, Smith\, and Roger Flores\, along with a few lung cancer survivors. \nBackground on I-ELCAP\nIn 1991\, a group of physicians from Cornell University Medical Center (now Weill Medical College of Cornell University) started discussions with specialists from other institutions to find a common research goal. They found this goal in early lung cancer detection\, and the promise offered by helical CT imaging. In 1992\, ELCAP (Early Lung Cancer Action Program) was born. It was designed to determine the difference in proportion of early stage disease between two methods of early diagnosis (chest radiography and low-dose CT) as measured by the increase in the proportion of Stage I diagnoses following a well-defined regimen of screening.

SUMMARY:NY Harbor VA -- Manhattan Campus
DESCRIPTION:New York\, NY. In 2013\, the NY Harbor VA joined seven other VA locations for the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) lung cancer screening pilot program. The nationwide screening program is committed to finding lung cancers early in their high-risk veteran population. \nVA Set to Begin CT Lung Cancer Screenings in Veterans After Success in Medical Trial \nPosted by Doug Karr \nThe United States Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is taking an active role in the early detection\, and ultimately\, treatment of lung cancer in veterans. Inspired by the success of the National Cancer Institute’s National Lung Screening Trial\, the VA is in the beginning stages of implementing CT scans. \nAs reported by DOTmed News\, the VA will start “phased implementation” of the CT screenings for lung cancer at six VA hospitals. In a statement sent to DOTmed\, the VA has yet to publicly announce which VA hospitals will participate or when the program will begin. \nMoreover\, the veterans who participate at the initial six VA hospitals will provide feedback that will allow the department to plan a system-wide program and how to best manage it. The VA wants to ensure that the entire scope of the program – from the screening itself to receiving a potential diagnosis – is handled in such a way that it alleviates veterans’ concerns instead of adding to it. \nThe National Cancer Institute’s National Lung Screening Trial which published its results in November 2010\, found that a low-dose helical or spiral CT scans were more successful at spotting lung cancer than chest x-rays. \nFurther\, the National Cancer Institute looked at 53\,454 “current or former heavy smokers” and found that with a CT scan\, there was a 20% reduction in deaths from lung cancer. \nBased off of the success of the National Lung Screening Trial\, the VA hopes to identify potentially high risk veterans who were current or former heavy smokers through early CT screenings. \nFor veterans\, in particular\, lung cancer is not solely linked to smoking. While on active duty\, many veterans were exposed to chemical agents\, toxins and other hazardous materials that could lead to lung cancer. One of the most common toxins active duty service members were exposed to was asbestos. \nOver the years\, many veterans from all branches\, were unintentionally exposed to asbestos while protecting their country. However\, Navy veterans who were stationed at shipyards\, built ships or served on ships were especially vulnerable to asbestos exposure. \nCommonly thought to cause mesothelioma\, asbestos exposure is linked to lung cancer. Couple asbestos exposure with heavy smoking\, many veterans are at an extreme risk for developing lung cancer. \nRead more: http://www.mesothelioma.com/blog/authors/doug/va-set-to-begin-ct-lung-cancer-screenings-in-veterans-after-success-in-medical-trial.htm#ixzz2xisaPCKw

SUMMARY:Memorial Sloan Kettering
DESCRIPTION:New York\, NY. Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) has been a leader in cancer care since it opened it doors in 1884. Team Draft visit MSK and speak with Dr. Charles Rudin\, the new Director of the Lung cancer program. Dr. Rudin will detail how MSK will continue to lead the way in lung cancer treatment options. \nHistory of MSK: \nMemorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center was founded in 1884 as New York Cancer Hospital on Manhattan’s Upper West Side by a group that included John J. Astor and his wife\, Charlotte. In 1899\, the name was changed to General Memorial Hospital for the Treatment of Cancer and Allied Diseases. In 1916\, the word “General” was dropped and the new name became Memorial Hospital for the Treatment of Cancer and Allied Diseases. \nIn 1936\, the hospital began a move to our present location on York Avenue\, on land donated by John D. Rockefeller\, Jr.\, and the new Memorial Hospital opened in 1939. The building\, which was reconstructed between 1970 and 1973\, stands on the site today. \nIn the 1940s\, two former General Motors executives\, Alfred P. Sloan and Charles F. Kettering\, joined forces to establish the Sloan Kettering Institute (SKI)\, which has since become one of the nation’s leading biomedical research institutions. Built adjacent to Memorial Hospital\, SKI was formally dedicated in 1948. \nIn 1960\, a new corporate entity — Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center — was formed to coordinate and guide the overall policy for Memorial Hospital and the Sloan Kettering Institute\, and in 1980 these entities were unified into a single institution\, with a single president and CEO.

SUMMARY:A Survivor at Every Arena: New York Knicks
DESCRIPTION:New York\, NY. Lung cancer survivor Kathy O’Brien will represent Team Draft at Madison Square Garden\, as the New York Knicks take on the Brooklyn Nets.  Kathy will attend the game\, as part of Team Draft’s A Survivor at Every Arena program with the NBA. \n  \nTeam Draft is committed to creating a unique experience for participating survivors and to raise awareness on a local and national level by using each game and each survivor’s story to weave a broader narrative about the state of lung cancer and the hope that now exists for those battling the disease. \n  \nAbout Kathy O’Brien: \n  \nKathy O’Brien of Westfield\, New Jersey\, thought her eyes were playing tricks on her. She was driving her three kids to school two years ago when she noticed that the stop sign was blurry. Her eye doctor sent her to a retina specialist\, who spotted six tumors in her left eye and four in her right. The next day — after a battery of tests including an MRI and a CT scan — Kathy was in an oncologist’s office\, blindsided by news that was beyond shocking: She had stage IV lung cancer. “Never in a million years did I think I’d hear something like that\,” says Kathy\, who had recently run her fifth marathon and had become certified as a Bar Method exercise instructor. “It seemed impossible because I had never smoked.” \n  \nhttp://www.fitnessmagazine.com/health/body/head-to-toe/lung-cancer-in-non-smokers/
